New Vrs Petrol Or Used Diesel

Am looking to purchase myself a vrs, only problem is dont know whish to go for.

Currently am loking at either a new petrol or a year old(10 plate) diesel.

Prices for diesel are about 17.5k roughly same as new petrol with same spec.

What are thoughts out there good thing about used is can get it almost immediately

but new would have a 4-6 month wait.

depends how much milage you do, less then 10k a year and the diesels not worth the extra purchase cost

Get the petrol unless you do intergalatic mileage. I've had both and am going back to the petrol again as I find the diesel a bit dull to drive and was lacking in performance until I had it remapped and then it was comparable with a standard TSI I would say.

I'm a fan of the diesel. Look at it practically, if you do a reasonable amount of mileage then the extra you get from the diesel will be worth it. It's perfectly quick enough - it'll more than do the UK speed limit of 70mph on motorways and dual carriageways B).

There is no good reason to buy the petrol version unless you drive short distance only or you often take your car to Germany and drive on the autobahn. The diesel still handles like the petrol and is almost as quick at accelerating - the 1.5 second to 60 difference you simply won't notice unless you're on a track or a chavvy idiot boy/girl racer that likes to show off at traffic lights - and has deep pockets for the extra fuel used in those silly accelerations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's only a 30bhp difference and not much in body weight either.

Oh, and I've driven both versions (at work in high performance situations) plus I own a new CR vRS. For work I'd have petrol but for my own driving (driven legally on UK roads) the diesel is perfectly good enough, you won't notice much in performance but you'll notice loads in economy.

If your being sensible and going to keep for a while 4 years+ then get the diesel, but if you want to smile every time you drive it then get the petrol it's a simple as that, head says diesel heart says petrol.

I have has 2 vrs petrols now, both from new, first one was a standard 06 hatch and i loved it, in a moment of sensibleness i got rid of it and got a vectra sri estate 150bhp diesel, for cheaper running costs and more practicallity as have 2 dogs. Needless to say i thought it was crap, lasted 2 months as standard, then got a remap to just under 180bhp, was still crap compared to a petrol vrs so ditched it and bought a new FL estate vrs 2.0tsi petrol, had it remapped and and new air filter in week 1 and it's amazing. All in all a very expensive moment of sensibleness.

Diesel would be nice when insuring or going on long trips or even for avoiding filling up so oftern but a petrol is more than nice every time you drive it.

PS there is nothing quite like owning a spanking new car an knowing that you know every thing there is to know about it, has it been thrashed, how did it get that stone chip, is there a bit of filler somewhere, you get the idea.

Only you can decide....depends on mileage really and whether you like diesels. Test drive them both (back to back if possible) and make your decision.

10 plate CR unit can only be remapped if ECU is removed cannot be plugged and played like the older cars.....................atleast from what I've understood (or maybe its mis-understood)

If you can find a good 2nd hand one if you don't want to wait then go for it...depends if you want brand new or not...

IMHO the only argument for any Diesel is an economic one, based on covering a high annual mileage. Petrol tends to win out on every other factor.

I have run petrol and Diesel vRS and we currently run a petrol vRS and a Diesel Fabia II. I much prefer the 'drivability' of the petrol engines.

Modern Diesel engines (like the CR on the Octavia) are now quite a lot more complex than petrol engines and there are more expense components to go wrong. Additionally, fault-finding seems more difficult on these CR's due to the very high pressure injection system requiring specialist diagnostic equipment and knowledge. So Diesel is potentially more econmical, but one bit of bad luck out of warranty and you can soon burn through all that money you've 'saved' by having a more fuel-efficient engine.

I think if I were doing at least 20k miles per annum I'd consider a Diesel, but for anything less it has to a be petrol for me.

Even at 10k miles a year the diesel at 40 mpg saves £700 over petrol at 28mpg. Plus it holds its value better come time to sell. Look at price of 06 petrol vs 06 diesel.

I went for the petrol mainly because my journey to work is only 3 miles and was worried about the DPF going wrong driving only short distances.

Not really, you pay more in the first place and this is what you get back at resale

My vote is always based on miles & usage , if you do a LOT of short runs or do mostly city driving & these total to less than 12k a year, then it has to be petrol.

More than 12k a year & mostly NSL M/Way - Dual carrageway then Diesel.

If the money is the same for a new petrol or used diesel vrs id personally go for the new petrol vrs,i have a petrol vrs & do around 12k a year & its great(really nice engine & drives really well)as others have said only you can decide what you want,both the petrol & diesel vrs's are very good cars & each have their own good & bad points. Either way its a nice choice you have to make! :)

A colleague has a 56-reg. Passat CR which uses the same Siemens 'piezo' Diesel injectors as the Octavia CR. He has done about 70K in it and has had two of the injectors fail outside of warranty. This is apparently becoming a fairly common problem. The cost of replacement of EACH injector was just over £800! So £1600 on repairs in about 1 year. And he has been told the other two injectors may well fail in the near future!

Whatever the economy, modern cars can be expensive to run!

I'm kind of in a similar situation.

I'm looking at buying a facelift vRS as a replacement for my pre-facelift Petrol.

I've specced up a brand new petrol and with all the options and the 20% discount it comes in at just over £18k

What I would get for £18k is exactly the car I want - so Xenons, Leather, etc

Whereas the slightly older diesel won't neccessarily have all that I want.

I am averaging around 18k miles a year at the moment.

But I just cannot help feeling that if I buy diesel I'll be sat there in it one day and really wish I'd gone with petrol again.

I upgraded from a MK1 vRS 1.8T to a MK2 vRS PD and have no regrets with the performance of the diesel. To drive it feels very eager and offers a plentiful supply of power. It certainly doesn't feel sedate or boring to drive. I'm quite surprised when I read some comments on here which suggest the diesel vRS is not fun to drive. I definitely disagree.

Why not get a nearly new petrol VRS?

I assume the no VAT offer is making new cheaper than nearly new?

The newer TSI engine is more efficient than the TFSI brining the difference between the two closer. Also the TSI doesn't need super unleaded.
