Skoda Octavia 2.0 Elegance- possible purchase

Featured Replies

Hi

I am looking to get a Skoda Octavia Elegance Estate and have found the following:

* 2002 (Y reg)

* Estate

* 49,000 miles

* Automatic

* 2.0L

* Petrol

5 Doors, Automatic, Estate, Petrol, 48,000 miles, Metallic Green, MOT-12-2011, 1 Owner. LOVELY LOW MILEAGE WARANTEED OCTAVIA ESTATE with JUST an AMAZING 48K GENUINE miles & ONLY 1 OWNER from NEW. ABS, Air conditioning, Alloy wheels, Electric sunroof, Front armrest, Headlight washers, Folding rear seats, Immobiliser, Passenger airbag, Roof rails, Radio\Cassette, Side airbags, Radio\CD Multichanger, Rear headrests, Traction control, Drivers airbag, Electric door mirrors, Front head restraints, Heated door mirrors, Height adjustable drivers seat, PAS, Rear electric windows, Rear wiper, Remote central locking, Steering wheel reach adjustment, Trip computer, 3x3 point rear seat belts, Cloth seat trim, Solid Paint, Isofix child seat anchor points, Body coloured bumpers, Front electric windows, Front fog lights, Full size spare

Is there anything I should be asking about for more details on? (Other than is it a CD or Cassette Radio!).

They are asking £1999. I have no car to trade in for PX so hoping to make a good cash deal (help on that too please!).

Not seen one "in the flesh" so need to confirm that my large Chocolate Labrador can have plenty of room in the boot? (He has a cage which he is comfy in from the last car).

Thanks in advance :yes:

Well the boots huge, but best check the dimensions of your cage I guess.

If it's standard there will be a 6 CD changer hidden in the boot and a tape player up front that will control the changer. You can buy Skoda CD units for up front that will control the changer on eBay for about £80, or buy a new head unit and forget about the changer.

You need to ask about the timing belt, although it hasn't reached the 60K change point they do need changing every 4 or 5 years (can't recall) which, and they aren't cheap to replace.

I just purchased a 108k mile 53 plate TDi Ambiente hatchback for £1900 (had a full service history too) which the good folk on here seem to think was a pretty reasonable deal. I got a 150k 02 plate TDi Elegance Estate for about £1800 a few months back.

For a better idea on price hopefully someone else on here can comment.

I dont know anything about the engines but with that low mileage I would hope for service history and evidence of oil changes as above if the timing belt hasnt been done it will need to be and that could add a lot on the price of the car if those things are covered and the overall condition of the car is alright seems like a good deal to me as long as your not planning on doing a lot of mileage in which case I expect you would be better with a diseasel.

I'd say £2000 is about right (possibly a tad high) - why not check Parkers.co.uk for pricing info.

If you like the car and can afford it, i'd say it's a fair price. Does it have a service history and previous MOT,s to back up the mileage claim.The cam belt is 60,000 miles or 4 years what ever is sooner. On that basis it should have been changed for the 2nd time in 2010. I'd want to see a receipt for that, if not you'll need to allow £400 odd quid and get it done ASAP.

It cant be a 2002 on a Y reg,it must be a 2001.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Its really helpful.

Here is the response from the sellers:

"I can confirm that the Octavia Estate Y486 NLL is a one owner car from NEW (ZERO previous keepers) and has a current MOT certificate until 7th December 2011 and we have all the previous MOT mileage and history from March 2007. Furthermore it has FULL SERVICE HISTORY with 8 service stamps in the official Skoda service booklet. We can offer a full 3 months parts and labour warranty that covers the engine and gearbox at the screen price."

Just a bit concerned now re the lack of pre-2007 information although the DVLA website basic info on MOTs did confirm that the MOT is valid. Should I push to ask him for the MOT Certificate number so I can see what works were done or the VIN number for all previous up to 2005?

I will ask him to confirm though re the cambelt. If its not done then I will ask him if he will take the price off (is that fair?).

Again many thanks for your help so far!

Regards

2.0 is a simple and pretty old design 8 valve VAG engine. But it's reliable and robust. It replaced 1.8 20v non-turbo. 2.0 engine works a lot better on lower revs as opposite to 20v. It also has reasonable fuel economy.

It cant be a 2002 on a Y reg,it must be a 2001.

That is the first thing I thought as well.

2001 = Y, or a late 2001 will be on a 51 plate.

If the current MOT checks out, I would not worry too much about the previous ones you can't see online. Might be handy to know if/when the pads and disks have been changed, and what advisories it might have had.

I see they say the warranty covers the engine and gearbox but makes no mention of the clutch - do automatics have clutches?

The dealer may well offer to change the cambelt rather than knock it off the price - as he can do it for less. If they offer that, make sure they change the water pump as they have a habit of failing, while doing the cambelt change. A new metal water pump is about £30 - I just bought one, and a cambelt kit (granted for my diesel) was £87+vat.

According to honestjohn.co.uk there are reports of heavy oil consumption of old 115PS 2.0 litre 8v petrol engine that replaced the 125PS 1.8 in 1999.

So that should be point to watch for.
