HELP NEEDED

Featured Replies

I was out this morning and there was a really loud BANG/BOING sound from the front, followed by what sounded like some bit of metal falling off. I presume this is the front spring giving up as you can hear the boing sound as you turn the wheel.

My main questions are, will driving on it do it any harm?

Should I replace the springs in pairs? and is it a common thing to happen to the vrs?

Thanks

Common on the vRS and most octys. Best to replace in pairs, and remember that the correct vRS rated front springs is difficult to that of normal petrol/diesel Octys - best get them from TPS (or your dealer who will get from TPS and bump up the price :giggle:).

Other garages are likely to fit standard springs and the ride hight will increase, and not be as "spec". There are certainly been stories on here of Kwik Fit fitting the wrong ones.

I would keep driving down to a minimum if at all possible and don't go flying into too many corners/speed bumps etc.

Open the bonnet. If one of the spring caps is sitting down on turret, then the spring has gone.

You should get it done ASAP. You can drive it slowly to the garage but otherwise you should really drive with it broken spring. It depends on how the spring has broken. Yes you should replace springs in pairs.

Do your homework and make sure the garage you take it to can source OE springs. You can only source the correct springs from TPS or the dealer. Many garages will tell you that they can source aftermarket springs for your car but this is NOT TRUE.

The correct springs for the VRS have 1 violet and 4 yellow paint marks

but because i had to move out before 31st Dec, all mechanics were off at this time and i had no options but to drive my car. did almost 400 miles with loaded car, still was ok.

First days of Jan, got a 2nd hand vRS spring (20 quid) fitted thinking ride hight will be slightly different, but i was wrong. got a perfect match

Iv had a look under the bonnet and the suspension turret is definitely dropped. Looks like I'll be trying to get it sorted tomorrow. Is there any need to replace the dampers at the same time as the springs or not?

No need to replace the dampers at all.

Sorry posting from tapatalk and can't see profile info.

Correct VRS springs are a main dealer or TPS part only. Whatever you do don't buy VRS springs from a Motor Factor they'll be wrong. Plenty of people on here who've made that mistake. BTW You should also always replace springs in pairs.
