Broken down!

Featured Replies

Hey;

I've owned my VRs for around two years now and not had a problem with it, serviced it on time, treated her nicely etc. Then today she decided to show me her appreciation by cutting out on the way to work!

Was going 40mph in third gear and then suddenly the engine cut out and wouldnt start again, I also noticed over the last two weeks when driving the car hard I feel a lack of power (like turbo's not there) but after a re-start it runs fine again, do you think these are related?

any idea's on what it could be and how much I should expect to pay? cars had a tow truck drop it off at a local RAC recommended garage

Thanks in advance

After my 1.9TDi Elegance suffered the same symptoms, the ECU had be replaced, not cheap. Let's hope it's not that!

mine did that at about 45k and was the fuel pump - no idea what the cost would be as it was a warranty job but i suspect a lot less than an ECU!

did the RAC chap not give any idea?

the RAC man suggested slipped timing belt.. not good!!

Its not the fuel pump as the garage rang a little while ago and said they cant see an immediate problem and theres no error codes except for the egr valve mod - i presume this cant be related as its been done for around 40K miles

If it was ECU would they be able to tell straight away? (i.e. would it come up as an error message?)

thanks guys

My vrs just cut out the other day and took a few starts for it to come back to life which I think was air had got into the fuel line ? God knows how but it's been fine since :)

rubbing salt in the wound much?! :D

haha, nah it wont be that as I tried hard and long to get it to start to no avail! :(

Could be a blown turbo?

Tenner on the fuel pump relay.

just had a phone call this morning, He doesnt know what's wrong, he thinks its internal and in the bottom of the engine and making engine loose compression and is suggesting new engine, what should I do? is he just doing the wrong things? con artist?

I suggested everything in this thread and he came back with a very logical answer for why it was nothing suggested, to be honest im at a loose end here, I cannot afford a new engine. How much does one set you back anyway?

Im sure it wont be this simple but its not the lower intercooler?/boost? pipe which goes in the bottom of the engine near the inner side of the offside wheel?

Engine would have gone into limp mode if it had popped off but could it just be loose/not fully connected?

easy to miss missing teeth on timing belt common on these tell garage to check the belt all the way round it jumps you see first time this happened to me took ages to find even though i checked the belt at first i missed the damage

that is such a cheats way out.

We dont know what is up so we are going to replace the engine.

Talk to your Breakdown provider and find out if you can get the car moved to a skoda dealers/VAG specilist....

My GF golf had a problem the stoopid Garage couldent fix, Warm starting problems, the battery died we changed it it was fine! solved the warm start problems.

Then the other week the car started to cut out on us took it to her dads friendly garage and turned out to be the DMF had failed Drasticly!

Sorry to hear about that buddy :(

Firstly the not giving poke symptom, when you say no power do you mean no power at 2.5k onwards and making a loud engine noise when accelerating? If so that could mean it shut itself into limp mode (which is what happened to mine many a times.)

But since there's no apparent error codes it may not be that at all.. :S

I would defiantly try another garage. I don't believe they are THAT good to finalise a diagnosis of a car without taking things apart.

When you get back to the car turn the key and see if you can hear the fuel pump prime, if there is around half a tank or less of fuel it should make that slurping type sound.

If there is no noises of life from the fuel pipe it would be worth checking that out ?

have you checked the fuses at side of driverside dash board??

we had an ibiza fr 130tdi in at work and that just cut out randomly, no codes at all turned out to be a fuse blown cannot remember what it was for exactly just remember the fuse being blown. easy enough to check takes 30secs. defo worth a try if it already hasnt been done

hope it gets sorted

Get it to a VAG specialist, the current place doesnt sound like they know much tbh

Did you notice a bang or any sort of pressure releasing at all, or did the engine cut??

I had my fabia nearly 2 years, serviced every 10k, got it mapped last week at 57k, had the same problems as you, no power but when i stopped and started the car it was alright, then accelerating heard this release of pressure, and engine cut, would not start. Turns out the turbo blew, the IC pipe was full of oil. Get them to take of a IC pipe under the car see if its full of oil.

My mechanic first thought it might be a fuel pump, but 2mins checked that and then realised it was turbo..

New turbo, 200-500, if its the turbo better replace it with a pd150 garrett turbo as the KKK are prone to blowing..

Your mechanic is giving off bad vibes here. You must take this car to someone who knows these engines. In the bottom of the engine, is the crankshaft and oil pickup pipe, conrods, big end and main end bearings and that's it. Has he actually done a compression test?

could be the turbo thats what mine was the last 3 times :giggle:
