Manual gearbox oil change

Featured Replies

Does VAG manual gearboxes need an oil change? I think I heard something about 300.000 km intervals but I don't know is it's true.

For example, my '98 1.6 Corolla needs an gearbox oil change every 60.000 km.

Thanks.

Skoda suggest it is not necessary to change. However every 100k miles would seem reasonable. I changed mine after roughly 100k, and I might change it again when I hit 200k, but to be honest what came out looked pretty clean.

If you do decide to change it, go for proper VAG gearbox oil. Also make sure you can get the filler plug out before actually draining it.

I changed mine at about 90k miles and it made a noticeable improvement to the gear change.

Also make sure you refill it with the car level!

like mbames said make sure you undo the filler hole first incase it is stuck

17mm hex key to undo filler and drain - when you refit torque both to 25Nm

refill to level of the fill hole and then run engine for 2 mins - recheck level and fill as necessary - make sure car is level !!!

I'd go for 100k or so intervals on a manual. I'd change an auto (not PDK, torque convertor) every 50k, since that's what ZF Transmissions recommend, and if they don't know about autos, no-one does.
