Another blown turbo Fabia vrs

Featured Replies

Well after reading several posts about turbos blowing mine has decided to go at 135k!

Devo'd!

Only brought the car begining of Jan!

It had 131k wen i first purchased with full service history and i did notice the black smoke under heavy acceleration but just thought it smoked abit more then other diesels due to the sports exhaust!

Now im faced with a £700 bill!

Am lucky in a way as previous car was the golf anni tdi with 130k and about two weeks after selling that the turbo went on that aswell!

Coinsidence or wot hey!

So anyone buying a vrs that has black smoke under acceleration avoid! turbo is on its last legs!!

Mine did, when i bought it, just had a boost leak, which is more likely than a turbo, cost me £35 to fix.

Turbo's often just let go with no signs, or start whistling before they go.

There's a 40k turbo on eBay at £50 at the moment, plus £150ish for fitting, could be sorted for £250-£300.

Sitting in the same box as me except mine done 100k less than yours! FAIL... I'm going down the Hybrid route though so my bill will be a hefty £1100 for the turbo alone

Really, Fair enough! Wish thats all mine was! I was considering buying a second hand one but then after seeing Rossys post and a few others that have failed at low mileage theres no guarentte they will go the distance hence why im considering a brand new one.

Excessive black smoke can be a boost leak. Lleading to the turbo overboosting. I suspect this is what happened in your case and eventually leads to turbo failure

If you look in my recent topics I have found Garrett Pd150's which is a stronger turbo Re-furbed on ebay for around 500-600 with 6 months guarantee

135K from a turbo spinning at mega RPM is good going. Decent price for the fix, wait till the injectors need doing.

just had mine replaced. VERY expensive bill. Ended up having to change the intercooler as well as bits off the turbine had snapped off and sent themselves into the intercooler and piping. I did a exchange with turbo technics for a brand new garrett. Ended up costing £500 for the turbo. New one does seem quieter so wondering if it had been going for a while. Seems to go a little better now as well.

lucky sod, bill could have been more expensive had them bits found there way to your engine.

Black smoke doesn't mean the turbo is going to go pop. Mine smokes as its remapped, but only a bit. Turbo sounds fine and mine is at 110k on original turbo :)

Just unlucky mate

mines just turned 40k whats yours on rossey?

Hope this isnt the case with mine. Waiting for it to be taken of at the moment so i can see what the damage is.

Hoping i might be able to get it refurbed with a warrenty and it hasnt caused any other damage!

Yeah 135k is good going for the turbo i suppose. Dont say that about the injectors!! Is that another big bill? Just had the cambelt and waterpump along with full service done aswell!

Might have to cut my loses sooner then later! Its still on original clutch according to the history, have any of you had to replace clutches yet?

£150 for the clutch, £120 fitting, again, one of the things people seem to thing are thousands to fix, when they arnt really.

Injectors are £600 EACH, although there are companies who will rebuild them. At one point, it was cheaper to buy a cylinder head with injectors already fitted.

You guys are scaring the crap out of me ive now 100k on mine its remapped and i get a little haze of smoke under hard acceleration.

Perhaps a poll should be taken of people who have had blown turbos and then an average mileage could be worked out ??

Mileage is almost entirely irrelevant I think. It is down 30% to servicing and upkeep and 70% to driver abuse (even if they don't know they are abusing them.....)

thats a great idea drh771

Latest updates - My mechanic is telling me he is struggling to find a new turbo for under £700!

I Advised him to try midland turbo but he says he doesnt use them as he has had bad experiences in the past.

Do any of you know of any reputable companiesi could ask him to contact that may be able to provide one slightly cheaper, brand new or recon and preferble not a breakers yard!

Agreed to a point lol

My last Fabia was on 131/132k when i got rid, original turbo, and Col G & I gave it a hard time and it was still spot on.

However, my current one, thats had an easy life, let go at 58k !

Unfortunately, polls don't work very well, as few people come on forums to say everything is hunky dori. If you buy a car, and then join a forum for that make, you start to wonder if you have done the right thing. That includes Mercedes Lexus Toyota et al.

Modern cars are now designed to be throw away products.
