Slipping clutch ... not in first gear?

Featured Replies

My 03 Octy vRS has 106k under its belt, the last few k of which were after a Revo remap, so i wasn't entirely surprised when the clutch started to slip. to begin with, it was sporadic, sometimes it would slip when the boost came on, others not. now it consistently slips whenever the turbo kicks in, in 2nd, 3rd and 4th. i am therefore thinking of fitting the vr6/g60 conversion for the clutch and flywheel (discussed extensively on these boards).

however, there's one thing i don't understand - as far as i can tell, the clutch doesn't slip in 1st. 1st doesn't take very long to hit the red line, in fairness, but as far as i can tell it does so without any clutch slippage - it seems as neck-snapping as ever and the acceleration and revs seem to remain proportionate. otherwise the gears and so on are working fine.

is this normal? would be nice to know before i shell out on the parts for the new clutch etc. the car is only worth £2k or so, so if it were new gearbox time then I'd have to think seriously about whether or not to keep it.

There's less resistance to the cluch in 1st, so it will slip less or not at all. It will be worst on boost in top gear.

i thought there was probably an explanation. thanks v much!

Gearing means a lot less torque. It will be in 3rd & 4th you feel it worst.

and first doesn't boost as hard as the other gears.

usually 2,3,4 is worst on all cars so ya it will defo be your clutch....

The boost is the same in any gear!!!

boost is engine speed dependant, like has been said here itll be 3rd and poss 4th yourll get it worst dues to the gearing

Isn't the torque limited in first gear? I know mondeos TDCi's are. :wonder:

have you got a boost gauge? you will see that you don't get full boost. At least you don't on a mapped car.

Haven't got one, but will have soon, hopefully.

Running a Shark stg1 map, and it doesn't lose grip as easily in 1st as my last one with a cheap postal remp did.

When my old clutch went, it would normally show when loaded up in 5th on the motorway.

I don't think it ever slipped around town actually.

It's load/torque/boost that makes the clutch slip. Cruise down the motorway at 70mph in 5th, then put your foot to the floor. It'll probably slip every time, and more so if there's an incline or the car is full of fatties!

Lots of maps have different boost thresholds for different gears. It makes total sense not to have 20psi in 1st! You can have different rev limits for different gears too.

G60/VR6 FTW!

Unless you like doing burnouts

what's the general thinking on second hand flywheels? someone's breaking a G60 on ebay and the new item is a bit on the steep side. is it a part which tends to wear out or would an old one still be up to scratch?

i have a very slight slip on mine with the G60 / VR6 conversion, it's a momentery slip for a second then stops. doesn't matter how hard i drive it it won't completely slip.

it's done it since day one of the conversion and now 4k later still doing it lol

Same was mine,slipped badly in 2nd and 3rd gear,never in 1st
