DSG "D"rive selection

Featured Replies

Hi

I own a MY2011 Skoda Superb 170 TDI DSG and i feel that it is a little too economical when it selects gears.

It first downshift gears at 1150 revs per min, so it is keeping it in high gears allmost up to the (torque) breaking point of the engine.

The result is that it gives some kind of raddle noise from the engine as it starts protesting a little. It only happends from 1250 and below (when driving).

Can the DSG D mode be adjusted so it changes gears a little faster?

30 miles pr hour in 5'th gear is not funny. :(

I think I understand what you're saying, but...

I'm currently driving an Octavia 1.9 TDI DSG and I have noticed that if driving around town at 30, mine struggles to change up to fifth and I end up having to put the car into manual and knocking up to fifth myself.

I am aware of the DSG's ability to "learn" the driving style, and it's supposed to change according how the car is being driven. I have no idea if it's possible to reset the "memory" without visiting the dealer, although I'm sure they could do it quickly enough.

The DSG learns how you drive, if you want the gear changes in different places drive it harder and then it will change gear differently. I have none of the issues you describe, but my car is remapped and driven quiet hard at the weekend.

Failing that, try S mode and the car is transformed. The DSG will hold the car in the optimum power band when under throttle and when slowing will change down the gears earlier resulting in higher RPM.

Dad stuck his Fabia DSG in Sport and for a while after when in regular D it didn't try shuffling into 7th at 35mph. If you cane it a bit and induce kick down, it should learn fairly quickly that you don't want it to try and match Govt Eco figures by slotting into top gear at 1100rpm...

Hi - mine does exactly the same thing. I don't really mind, but the sport mode sorts it out if needed. It does rattle along a bit and feels like its on the verge of stalling.

Did some testing over the last few days, at 30mph my DSG box sits in 4th when in D, a light touch of the throttle and it shifts back to 3rd, use kickdown and goes right down to 2nd. and in S will hold 3rd at the same speed and only select 4th if I back right off the throttle. 5th comes in at around 40mph shortly followed by 6th at around 50mph..

Just checked mine.

Goes into 4th at 22mph

Goes into 5th at 32mph

Goes into 6th at 40mph

Hi oil burners.

I have a 1.8TSI with the DSG box on order, building next week, I hope.

A simple question, I think, what does 7th gear give you in MPH/1000rpm. Looked everywhere and cannot find the answer

HI Scott,

I think I know what you want... normally somewhere you'll find info about the ratios for each gear & the mph/1000rpm.

I hope I'm not being too simplistic here but calculating the mph/1000rpm for top gear should be...

Top speed (218kmh = 135mph for the 1.8T 118KW Estate) divided by 7 = 19.3mph/1000prm

I understand this may be flawed as 7th gear at 2000rpm is not likely to be about 40mph but I do think for the purpose of the ratios its the top speed that's taken in each gear.

Trying to find out what the other 6 gears do will be tricky without the tech data or the car... go on go for it... you know you want to... :D Have fun trying.

Stef

Thanks Stef,

But........ top speed in the brochure is 137mph and max power between 4500 and 6200 rpm...so 137mph is likely to be in that rpm range? If at say 6000rpm 23mph/1000rpm and if 5000rpm 27mph/1000rpm. ????? My Octavia vrs does about 26/27mph/1000rpm and I'm trying to see if the Superb will be as long legged or higher reving. Could be either!

As you say tricky to work out. In about 4 weeks time I should be able to see for myself assuming my build goes ahead next week, and nothing goes wrong with the delivery process. The first thing I'll do is check the rev counter and post a definitive answer. Unless of course there's a TSI DSG driver out there who knows already.

You know Scott.... what was I thinking???

Left the brain someplace else today!

Judging from the top speed you've got (are getting) the Hatch/Twindoor not the Estate... I assume?

The top speed is normally achieved at the top RPM so it should be 137/6.2 = 22.1 (rounded up a fraction).

But the question is does it run out of puff before you get to 6200rpm? I would have said that most modern cars can get to the max rpm in all gears.... but now with 7 gears its asking that little bit more.

In the past (~20 years ago, before engines were so finely tuned) it was in fact not unusual for a car to reach its top speed in 4th gear & 5th gear really was an "ove-drive" for economy. Now I believe this would be unusual.

So unless anyone knows the answer I'd be inclined to say that the top speed is reached in 7th gear at the rev limiter 6200rpm... so 22.1mph/1000rpm. Apologies for the clap-trap before (can it be deleted please  :wall:

Hi

Just arrived back from a trip in my 1.8TSI DSG and in 7th gear the instruments indicate that 1500 rpm equates to 45 mph.

Hope this helpful

Many thanks Graham.

Just what I wanted to know. I hoped that the 7th gear might be a bit longer that sixth on my Octavia VRS and it is. The Octavia does 40mph at 1500 revs. 80mph should now be about 2666 rpm. Nice and quiet.
