Wheel refurb!

Featured Replies

I understand this has been pretty much done to death, but I was interested in opinions regarding price.

Having seen another members black chrome Zeniths I am smitten. Got myself a set of winter wheels recently with an excellent set of summer tyres so I planned on doing the switch and whacking the Zeniths in for a bit of TLC.

Located in Kent I have been recommended Lepson's and or Spit and Polish, also KAP in Folkestone offer a good service. I was however a bit shocked by the prices - the process is tyre off, full chemical strip then shot/sand blasted, any repairs carried out, primed, powder coat then lacquered, tyre re-fitted and balanced. Price quoted for set of 4 = £300!! :o

Is that good or bad?

Sounds about right for a powder coat, I've also been quoted £45 per wheel for tyre off, acid clean, wheel refurb and spray (No powder coat)

KAP was 280, but that was just paint.

To be honest as long as the tyre is taken off prior to painting, instead of just the face being painted, I don't think you'd be dissapointed with the end result. Powder coat is meant to be harder wearing so just park in the middle of the road and avoid kerbs!

Tbh I don't think it will matter what the finish is, if you hit a kerb, the wheels get fooked, fact!

My issue with spending that much is I could just add a ton and go for something like these!

How come various professional tyre fitting places seemingly can't change a tyre without scratching up the wheel spokes? I've had that problem now with two different outfits, the first one really bad on 3 out of 4 wheels. They got a mobile guy from Tunbridge Wells down to refurb (at their expense) and the results were good.

But it shouldn't happen!

I hear what your saying buddy, when I had my tyres fitted a couple of months ago the wheels were dirty, a few days later when I gave the car a clean I noticed damage on the spokes. Definitely the fitting machine as my job involves training on this equipment and I chewed up plenty of wheels practicing. If I had noticed at the time the s*#t would have hit the fan............really bl00dy annoying!

Wow, i like them them, they would look great on my black vRS! Btw i just paid £230 for the same process on all 4 wheels at The Wheel Specialist. They quoted £300 originally so its worth trying to haggle on price. It worked for me.

In this case the manager did hold his hand up,(he couldn't do much else as I spotted it at the time of fitting.) He went and spat blood at the young (trainee?) fitter who had visibly screwed up 3 of the 4 wheels, then he organised a loan car for me and got this guy down from Tunbridge Wells (might be handy for you?)

Apparently it cost the tyre place £38 per wheel but this was about 3 years ago, on previous Octy.

I had a single new tyre recently on my current car and could see similar but much finer scratch lines on 3 or 4 spokes. The lines were about an inch in from the rim and parallel to it, like a sharp object had circled the wheel. However these lines eventually rubbed out with Brasso wadding and silver T Cut colour restorer - but only just!

Hi, I had the 17" zeniths on my Mk1 done last year at Lepsons in Swindon, initally quoted me at £55 per wheel plus VAT for full treatment as above if I dropped the wheels to them. I haggled a bit and said I could get it done cheaper at WheelRefurbing.com and they dropped it to the trade price of £45 per wheel plus VAT which gave me an all in price of £211 (bit more now due to VAT rise) I also got them to fit 2 new tyres that I bought from Camskill, so all in all a pretty good deal I think. I was very impressed with the work, one wheel had quite a bit of damage (scraps and a dent in the rim) when I took them in, couldnt tell which one it was when i picked them up.

might be worth pushing for a better price, probably depends how busy they are.

cheers

I have begun bouncing other quotes around so hopefully one will take the bait, in the current climate they would be silly not to. And I need to save as much as possible as the other cars front suspension collapsed this morning! :@

Hi, I`m just in the process of having all my wheels refurbed. They were never brilliant from new due to poor preparation. The Wheel Clinic in Sheffield are doing them one at a time - tyre off, bead blast, all marks hand prep`d, powder coated, baked, laquered, tyre back on , balanced - all for £45+ vat. Each takes 7 days to do (all four would take the same but I cant do without the car for a week. Had one done already and really pleased. I know its a long way from you but its a good benchmark for price.

Think I'm getting somewhere now, just contacted Lepsons and told them I had a cheaper quote from Spit and Polish, waiting for their counter offer as I type!

The quality of work at Spit & Polish is very good. Not seen anything from the other places.

I got my Turinis done for £50 a corner, by a guy I know through E38. Based in Coventry though, so just round the corner from you really.... ;)

You got a Wheel Specialist branch nearby Pagey?

Hmmm, 5 minutes up the road! :giggle:

Unfortunately the nearest TWS is in another county and beyond!

Fair enough. It's all about who's on the doorstep :)

Hopefully you'll get a decent deal by playing one off against the other emoticon-0148-yes.gif

  • 1 month later...

Have you had these done yet Lee?

Need some done myself now (one pretty quickly emoticon-0106-crying.gif )

Hi Giz,

Not done yet for various reasons - one being a £700 op the dog required!

If you just need one done, a work colleague had a very good repair carried out at KAP in Folkestone, around 70 quid iirc.

Around £70-£75 seems typical now - that's what my recent "scuff" repairer said my wheels would have cost each if I'd had to pay.

There is a guy local to me that does a mobile service, he charges around 45 quid per wheel but tbh I would prefer the job to be done with the tyre completely off, not just breaking the bead, and I'm not convinced about how well a set of infra-red lamps in the back of a van can cure the paint compared to a proper oven.

I spoke to him today and he was quoting £55 (not sure if that was plus vat?) for an 18" wheel, this to me seemed steep considering he can only refurbish half of the wheel this way.

I've just been to this place in Crayford for a quote - £65 per wheel all in (remove tyres, strip back to bare metal, repaired, painted, replace tyres - this was for 16" alloys, pretty scuffed). You'll be without the wheels for about 5 days. http://www.goodrims.co.uk/alloys.html

I've not had my wheels done yet as I'm trying to get the cash to get the winter tyres so that they can go straight on to the refurbished alloys (and hope that the price of the winter tyres falls a bit more as the summer approaches ;)).

Might be worth a call?

Justin
