Fireworks

Featured Replies

Took these last november... although I've had my camera for quite a while now, this was my first attempt at capturing a back-garden firework display.

The only ones that came out remotely interesting were those that were slightly weird looking - more about the lights and trails than looking like actual fireworks...

Thought I'd get a post in the new forum under my belt, and see if anyone has decent tips for shooting fireworks... Camera was Canon Powershot G2, with exposures between 3 and 10 seconds on a tripod.

Click on a thumbnail for full sized images (1.2mb each - sorry to 56k users!)

:haha: :twirl:

Seriously... the G2 is a semi-manual, 4 megapixel digital camera. I had it on exposure priority, so I set the exposure time and it did the rest :)

More details

One way of getting spectacular fireworks photos is to point the camera (mounted on tripod) at the area of the sky where the fireworks will burst. Lock the camera shutter open and keep the lenses covered with a piece of card. As each firework bursts, uncover the lens. Repeat for 4-5 bursts. The result should be a riot of coloured trails. I would post a pic or two, but my scanners broken.

I tried a similar approach, except I used my hand to cover the lens... The only problem with that is the G2 is limited to 15 second exposures, so it was hard to capture many fireworks...

Great pics, but what sort of camera was it? :P

I think it works best with a 35mm SLR, shutter on 'B', aperture f8, using slide film. I tried with my digital camera - a Nikon Coolpix 4500 - but couldn't really get any good results.

Far to cold for firework photography, far better to have a few warm shorts and get the brandy out :)
