Just been Sharked

Featured Replies

I ordered a stage 1 remap and sts from shark on Monday as well. You must have beaten me to it lol. By the time I phoned, Ben had no sts units available till Wednesday. If I'm lucky it'll arrive today, maybe tomorrow. I'm all excited :)

Hi Davey, I see your also in Fife. What TDI do you have ? I am after a Shark but thought the ecu's couldn't be done with the STS, requires a trip for a manual fit. I'm really after the STS solution, do you know if it's now available for the CR TDI ?

Most ECU's from around February 2010 are encrypted, so STS will not do.

Thanks for that, thats what I feared. Looks like I'll have to just go and see Ben. I have family in Chesterfield, so he's not too far and can make a short trip out of it. Will give me a few hundered miles to play on the way home too !

i have a 2010 octavia vrs which ben is mapping via the sts.

not sure if its encrypted or not but its not an issue.

If it's been done via the STS then it doesn't have the latest level of encryption on the ECU. As said, on the vRS they've been running the encrypted ECUs for just over a year now.

id LOVE to get STS on my 11 plate CR TDi but would under 500 miles be too soon :D:giggle:

Maybe a touch too soon, but everyone's different :)

1k min in my book, but I'd probably leave it until 10k....

On the plus side, you'll have more standard performance experience, so the upgrade will feel even more sweet :D

Hi Derek, I'm a bit late and your questions basically been answered. Yeah, the CR TDI can't be done by the STS. I've got a 2007 Octavia VRS PD TDI, so is easily STSable lol.

Didn't arrive today, hey ho. Ben did say it would probably be Friday, I was just being hopeful.

yeaaaaa I know :( but scary prospect is I will prob own the car for min 5 years but for first 18months to 2 years I really wont put much more than 5 or 6K on it lol taking it home soon that will add 3.5K alone in one return trip!! replaced my Fabia VRS that was mapped to 173bhp so for the weight increase etc its not all that amazing to me yet :D but the CR is a massive improvement on the PD was shocked at how much smoother and quieter DPF issues are a real worry for me but im minutes from a German Autoban so maybe not :D

Lol. Having done my research I was confident I would get good service and a reliable map, giving me a GOOD increase over standard and this is exactly what I received, without even having to drive the car 1mm in the direction of the tuner.

I also have the option, for my £600 'generic map' charge, of changing the car back to standard at any point, AND I can put an imobilser map on the car whenever I like too which I probably won't ever use but its there if I need it.

Wow you sound a bit miffed at someone else having an opinion on your "generic map"

Anyway as long as your happy thats the main thing..

I don't understand why it is ever too early to get a remap, I did mine on day 2 with less than 200 miles on it. 2k miles later it is so smooth and goes lovely :-)

Hi again Davey. I would certainly appreciate you opinion on the remap once you get it in. I have remaped before on other cars, had Dreamscience on the ST and it was brilliant, but all petrol. This is my first diesel so quite curious as to how well they map.

Thanks again for any input you have and enjoy yourself tomorrow !, Derek

I agree £600 is a lot of cash for a stage one map, I know you have the sts but even so.

Why was it £600? How much was the map and how much was the sts?

Glad i'm not the only one  , felt out numbered having an opinion lol

From reading oobster's other posts it was £449 for a map and £150 for the STS oh yeh £50 off for being a freedom member which costs you £12 so £38 saving, i need to mind sing up for the Freedom member thing.

I've decided to go Custom Code they are £349 and are only 2 mins up the road from my mums house so not a huge travel plus i have one of there "Generic maps" on my VW Caddy which now produces a healthy 160hp and 240ft/lb of torque.

Will do :)

Oh dear are you sure?

Make sure you do your homework and read lots of forum posts before you commit. I would pick Shark over CC any day and I don't have Shark lol.

One thing for sure Shark has put a lot of work into the k03 tfsi as Ben used to have an Octy.

My insurance co. (Skoda) want an extra £120 to cover a Shark Stage 1. Pretty gutted as that makes it approaching £700 all in with STS.

Need someone to tell me that it would be / is definitely worth that!!

Thoughts anyone?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it was either them or Star Performance i've not spoke to Jim to be fair so i could possibly work a deal to remap the car and detail a few of his cars

You're making comments about the generic Shark map being too expensive and then saying you're contemplating a Star map? That's funny

The Star map is also 'generic' and costs £466 + £120 for their equivalent of the STS module- so £586.

Shark is £450 + £150 less £38 freedom discount- so £562.

Now, I've had a Star map previously and been happy with it, and I've never had anything from Shark so I have no axe to grind about Shark being great, but it just appeared to me that your initial post was a bit of a knee-jerk reaction without actually realising the costs of the alternatives.

I'm not having a go at you at all as I agree that £600 does seem like a lot of cash for a map, but when you actually compare it like with like it then seems perfectly reasonable.

I doubt I would buy the box, personally seems pointless and I have always had great prices from Jim so probably wouldn't pay anything near that plus it's half hour up the road and you get runs on the rollers in the price.

All I'm getting at is don't all be brain washed by a certain brand open your eyes there are other people out there more than capable.

Correct, and there are also plenty that aren't

Shame you did't have your motor last year when the group buy was on - £399 with a free STS Box and then Freedom 10% discount!

Agree with both statements above in the fact that ther are capable others about and also clowns about.

From the feedback i have heard and read i would love to go to shark for the remap out of choice, but i cannot justify paying nearly £600 for a remap and the missus would go bonkers to boot!

My max will be £300 plus a session on the rollers.

Always been the big debate on the generic remaps never being as good as a custom, but the generics have always been well produced and tested before going out to the hundreds of mobile tuners about and so are safe. You go for custom and the guy knows what he is doing you get a perfectly setup car and everyone's a winner. If they aint got a clue you end up poor remap and possibly a big bang.

Absolutely agree with your second paragraph.

If you have no need for the box then the Shark map is cheaper than Star don't forget- obviously Star suits you as it's local though.

I don't think RR runs are included in Stars prices- I certainly had to beg to get mine done for free (although that was about 8 years ago). Anyway, that's getting off topic now, this thread's about Oobsters new map
