Can I keep my current email address?

If your e-mail address is related to your isp e.g. @btinternet.co.uk, @tiscali.co.uk etc.. then the short answer is no.

If you have an isp indepenent address e.g. @gmail.com, @hotmail.com account then you can continue to access it from your new ISP.

I think Orange allow you to retain Webmail access if you have an orange mobile phone, but you won't be able to send from Outlook or Outlook Express as you need to be on the ISPs network to use their outgoing mail server, the reason they do this is to prevent non customers from using their servers for spamming.

I have found that sometimes you can keep your email address, it depends if your new IP lets you or not. I have managed to configure my address's from BT and Tiscali to work on other IPs. Well that was the situation until a few months ago, when SKY changed some software at their end and now I can't. I reconfigured my emails to either send or receive. but was unable to set them to do both (I use Windows mail and Live mail). In the end I gave up and just set my other address's to forward all emails to my new address. The replies I make obviously come from my new address, but at least I don't miss any new emails that are sent to my old address. Sky let me use all my Google email address's tp both send and recieve though :) and you can always use webmail if you want.

btw, if you use an older email program such as outlook express etc, you can still recieve you old address emails. just (possibly)not be able to send from them. It isn't the end of the world i thought it would be :)

Helpful, thanks.

got a [email protected] address that I don't really want to lose so may just have to stick with bt.

Why not simply get the same name at gmail and tell folk that matter of the change?

Better still, but a domain name and have [email protected] etc and then whoever you are with, you control where you mail goes.

That way you'll not have to change it again.

Sky wont let me use BTinternet through it's servers :( But I set up mail forwarding and I still receive mail to that account :)

Sky use a re-branded gmail service. It will send emails from your sky.com address on behalf of your other email address, you can sign up to the skyusers.com (iirc) smtp service (free) and use their mail relay.

I am with Sky LLU and I just relay out using my own mail server (that handles email for my various domains).

But the best bet is buy a suitable domain and then pay for hosting (should not be more than £10/ year).

I use a SKY address to send emails that I receive on my old BT and Tiscali (Tinyworld) address's. I did fiddle with my settings and manage to send emails from my VT and Tiscali address's but then couldn't receive emails from them. I fiddled again and could receive directly from those address's but not send. Haven't found the settings that do both :(

If you want to have a play, I have a domain, that I no longer have any use for.

It's a co.uk and I could transfer it to you if you set an account up with the same provider (assuming there is no charge to do so).

That way, you'd get somewhere between 6 months and a year to play with it for free and then it's up to you if you wish to carry on with it.

Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks

Basically incoming mail (pop3) server should be mail.bt.blah.blah.com and mail.tinyworld.blah.com and your outgoing mail (smtp) server should be the skyuser one (I think you might need to provide authentication for the skyuser smtp server, but that should all be covered in the link above).

Thanks, but I don't have a problem downloading as this has always been the case regardless of ISP. It is sending from the non ISP address that is the problem, at least without using webmail. But, I can send from the errant address's if I modify my settings, but sadly this stops the download side working. I haven't fond the settings to allow both simultaneously. I did register ages ago and things worked until SKY did some sort of update to their servers. Perhaps I should re register?

Using the skyuser SMTP server for sending should resolve this - a work colleague is doing this, and you still list your old ISPs imcoming servers for POP.

ie. say for BTInternet:

Incoming server (POP3): mail.btinternet.com

Outgoing server (SMTP): smtp.skyuser.co.uk

I have made up the server names, as I can't remember them off the top of my head. As I use my own mail server I have never suffered these problems, but the above should work.

I thought for a minimal fee BT could allow you to keep a @btinternet.com address, maybe this has changed.

EDIT:

You can it's £1.50 per month.BT Premium Mail

I tried changing the SMTP from the POP and even changed Port too, but it didn't seem to work properly. I had a trawl on the interweb and copied some suggested settings, but :( perhaps I should give it another go thanks.

Thanks for all the replys folks, but am sticking with BT Broadband for now after being offered a dicount due to poor speed. Line rarely gets above 1mb and is often down to 400kb. I am sure this a location thing and other providers will be no faster.

At the discounted rate of £9.90 I can put up with this just now.

The good news is that our village was one of the 6 in the UK to win the Race to Infinity and so are to be upgraded to fibre optic in the next year

My mother in law was in the same situation with BT - 500kbps....If you sign up to an ADSL2 providor such as BE or O2 you will get twice the speed you currently get - ie 800kbps now you would get 1.6mbps with ADSL2. I signed her up to O2 and she can now actually use iPlayer :giggle:

We have had Infinity for nearly a year on my exchange but will not sign up to it until BT offer it to wholesale and i can get it with a decent ISP. Until then i will stick with my 5mbps from BE on ADSL2

No one offers ADSL 2 on our crappy exchange.

Never had any cause to complain about BT Internet (apart from the speed and thats an exchange issue), they have alway been helpful have have rewired theextension phones, given filter, accelerators and new routers, all for free, in an attempt to improve the service.

My big problem with bt is their very strict traffic management. Be and o2 have no restrictions in place at all or limits on downloads.

I had a feeling that Be and 02 (on non-llu hardware) have restrictions in place. Also I am not 100% sure they are truly uncapped on LLU. I am sure I read in their T&C their service could not be used for business purposes. I guess what they really means is that they are not going to trouble shoot any VPN type issues....

Believe me i have not had any traffic issues;) Full bandwidth on torrents etc and both myself and swmbo can vpn and sgd to work.

Afaik as i work in IT supporting homeworking the only isp that actively restricts vpn is aol.
