Bicycle rack-towball mounted

Featured Replies

I wondered if anyone had any thoughts on these, I want to get a towball mount rack, don't know whether to go for wheel mount or hang on rack- Pendle or Thule. Does anyone have any experience of these, i need to carry four bikes!

I have used tow ball mount racks for years. The ones used by me have simple clamps that fit over the ball. They may not look it, but they are very very effective. Roofbox do a range.

Good luck.

I doubt you'll get a 4 bike hang-over type, but I'm sure I've seen the wheel trough type for that number.

Be careful on what weight you put on the ball. The Yeti like any car has a max tow ball weight. For the Yeti it is 80kg.

And make sure you have a trailer board if ANY of the lights or the number plate is obscured.

They'd have to be bloody heavy bikes for 4 of them to weigh more than 80kg! Even the heaviest modern bikes come in at no more than about 14kg, most are much lighter!

I beg to differ.

A light full suspension bike weighs 13-15kg, ok some are down to 10kg, but they tend to cost £5000+. The average full sus bike will be 15+kg. 4 of those plus the weight of the carrier and you could be close or over the weight limit.....

Mmmmm

Since 1kg equals about 2.2 lbs, that suggests that the average bike weight is approx 13.5kg. 4 times 13.5 therefore equals 54 kg ... allowing 36kg for the weight of the carrier. No worries!

Sorry! Don't like the math...

Even though the difference should read 26kg, the Thule 4 bike carrier only weighs 21kg, so in theory it should be OK (from The Roofbox Company).

The cheaper the bike, generally the heavier it is. My wife's totally rigid old mountain bike weighs more than my full suspension bikeemoticon-0136-giggle.gif, which feels heavy compared to my road bike which is about 10kg, which is heavy for a decent roadbikeemoticon-0106-crying.gif.

I wouds agree that the average bicycle sold to Mr & Mrs average from Halford/Cycle King etc for £100/£200 etc will weigh 30+ pounds generally. Even based on those weights, with the Thule 4 bike carrier, you will be just within the towbar weight limit.

And with the type like Johann's you also have to take into account that the load is "outside" the tow ball, so therefore increases the load slightly.

(who remembers their physics and moment calculations?)

I have the Westfalia Portilo cycle carrier. I bought it because it folds up into a compact package when off the car.

Ah, yes, sorry about that ... blame old age, failing eyesight, fat fingers and small keyboards :'(

Apology not accepted... as none needed. I meant to put a large cheeky smiley at the end of my "comment" and forgot.
