People's Opinions About Your Car

Featured Replies

Do you care? Should you care? I'm 99.95% certain i'm buying a Fabia vRS estate in white with black wheels and other options. I'm happy with the car as it ticks every box I want it to. It will carry the kayak, the boot will carry loads, much cheaper than the Polo GTI, fast, efficient and fun to drive.

However, I'm almost certain that I will have people criticising my purchase. Stuff like "why did you spend 14k on a Skoda?", "why did you buy a Skoda and not a Polo GTI/ Audi A1?" or "why didn't you get a Clio RS200 instead?". I know there will even be people criticising it for not being a "drivers car" because of the DSG box. and you can't "heel-toe" with it. If you want a true "drivers car" then go buy a Lotus/Caterham (I will do one day). I've always had the mentality that you buy a car for yourself and no one else but it still gets to me. But this doesn't just go for a vRS this goes for any car you buy. There will always be someone who criticises it and it does annoy me and it almost puts doubt into my head.

Am I alone in thinking this?

Alot of my mates have criticised me already about buying a vRS Estate saying 'buy an Audi S4 Avant' or a 'BMW Touring' etc etc

I am getting a BRAND new car with 180bhp, full of mod-cons and space. What else can you buy, estate wise, that has similar power, space and appeal? I don't care about the badge, its my 2nd Skoda, my parents have just ordered a Yeti, will be there 3rd Skoda - someone is doing something right! And no, its not a poor man's VW, its a sensible man's Audi :D

Mini Clubman S? = Too expensive and slower.

Astra Estate? = G4Y!

Focus Estate? = As above!

Seat Ibiza ST? = Not enough power!

Do you care? Should you care?

No and no. Pretty simple really :D

That's what I'm thinking and I didn't when I had my first vRS. The thought of justifying my purchase to the uneducated masses i'm dreading.

"why did you buy a Skoda and not a Polo GTI/ Audi A1?"

After buying the Polo GTi, I don't get that at all. B) More people saying 'shoulda got the SRi Cosra innit?' :D

But I did used to get it a little when I had the Fabia, people soon stopped though, either getting bored or coming round to like the car (the latter being more common).

Do I care? Not at all.

I wouldnt bother, if you must lower yourself to their mentality, just tell them Skoda is #1 again this year in the Auto express driver power survey.

Whatever you get there'll be people telling you that you should have got something else.

Get what you want.

It's your car, you're paying for it and you're going to drive it.

If it'll make you happy then go for it and sod other people!

When I first got the Beemer I had a load of people asking why on earth I'd bought an automatic estate. They helpfully offered to get me some stringback driving gloves and a matching trilby.

My stock answer was "because it's 300bhp and it'll fit an Ikea wardrobe in the back"

You buy your car for you and your family. Not for anyone else.

my lupo gti gets ripped...

bubble car on steroids

postman pats van

is it a polo??

LOL... personally i think its cool as fluff and im smitten with it, if you love it then who cares

and i'll tell you something those 1.4 tsi 180bhp dsg vrs's are rocket ships...

There will always be someone who criticises it and it does annoy me and it almost puts doubt into my head.

You've considered all the options though, haven't you? As you're already anticipating which cars people will suggest, you'll have already discounted them for various reasons so there's no point doubting your decision.

Though not sure why you didn't go for the RS200... :D

It's nice hearing other folk commenting on a car you already own, but I would never base my car-buying choices on the opinions of others

Not sure why you feel you have to justify your car purchase, do you have to justify the house you live in or the clothes you wear? If you feel that you do then maybe you have some issues that need resolving. Like you said you have made the decision based on what is right for you, let's face it if every choice you made was based on other peoples preferences and hang ups you would be left owning lots of stuff that didn't work for you and you didn't like :)

If it's right for you and you are not harming anyone else then I can't see the problem.

do you have to justify the house you live in

Frequently.

Let's just face it, many people are judgemental ****s

its my 2nd Skoda,

The wife's Vrs is our 14th, you've a bit to go yet emoticon-0103-cool.gif

I find a lot of people seem to worry a lot about my car and the type of person that I must be, at least they seem to worry about it a lot more than I ever have

It's OK, I don't worry about you or your car at all.

Hope that makes you feel better.

:D

Btw Steve I am off to the Audi garage this afternoon and they have that chrome wrapped R8 still in. It’s a customer car, but sadly is wedged between other cars. I will try and get a snap of it though.

Fabia VRS = Guy drives a Skoda and is poor

BMW Z4 = Guy is minted...

go figure! :|

to be honest this is the first car I've ever owned that has generated such interest, people walk up to me in petrol stations to ask about it, chavs in corsa, stop to look and come out with things like "nice car innit" one guy even followed me through cockermouth into asdas carpark to talk about the car! he had a mini cooper s and was looking to buy a vRS...

all positive stuff.

That's all sounding far too positive Dave! They need to remain a stealthy, thinking person's choice :D

I don't want chavs interested to be honest.

Who gives a flying f*ck what anyone else thinks - it's your choice and no-one else's, so buy what YOU want, not what someone else thinks you should have

I'm surprisingly not a Yeti fan, but if people want to waste their notes on one who am I to criticise?

Considered all the options and for me the vRS ticks all my boxes apart from handles like a Lotus since nothing apart from a Lotus does anyway. The people who tend to comment about car choices normally don't know much about the oily bits and base their judgements on colour and prejudices.

Driven the RS200 right after the vRS a few months ago and loved it. It's in a different league. On a nice road when conditions are right it's fantastic. But a few things put me off. Fuel economy is supposed to be dire. Far worse than the 172's which would regularly get 40mpg being screwed. The one I drove had the cup pack which is good but the harsh ride would eventually annoy me. Not everyday I drive on nice roads. Plus it's only a 3 door which annoyed me no end when I had a Polo. If I get a car with 2 doors it will only have two seats. Wasn't sure how good the roof rack system would be either. The Clio always eggs you on to go faster and my cousin sold his 182 for that reason. He'd either lose his license or end up crashing it.

Quite like the idea of a white Skoda, which to the untrained eye is just that. One day I'll have the kayak on the roof at some lights with a BMW 318 rep mobile next to me looking smug thinking "It's a Skoda Estate, what's that gonna do" who then gets blitzed (all within speed limits of course).

Thanks guys for your responses and just confirming what I've always thought. I shouldn't give a pigs arse about other people's opinions and should make my car choices on my own.

I was confused. I thought you meant a proper RS200 for a minute there......
