stupid less than useless MDI media system....

Featured Replies

Right... In the fiat, I had 2 USB ports in the dash, simply plugged in my media, and off it went. instantanious everytime you switched on the engine, steering wheel controls that also had bluetooth ect ect, no drama no problems, plug and play!

the BLOODY skoda is really starting to **** me off now. I have the "option" of the MDI interface, I went and bought the cable needed that has a USB socket on it, plugged in my 8 gig memory stick, and it takes 20 minutes EVERY time to initialise before I get ANY music!!!!!!

SO, I gave in and spent even more money on the seagate freeagent, which someone on here reccomended, as they said there was no delay and it was the recommended media storage by skoda. What happens?! "PD not supported" !!!!!!!!!!!

SO angry. I should just be able to plug in my media and go. the bloody fiat worked perfectly every time.

someone please help me before I explode. what am I doing wrong?!

Thanks in advance... (rant over)

  • It's my understanding that they don't make an official recommendation, more that it's known that GoFlex was a good size and owners had good experiences with them. Probably from threads they've read on

I use a usb stick and it plays music straight away? cant think of any reasons why people are reposting long delay time?

I have the music on folders on the root directory

I\:Achtung baby\01 Zoo Station.mp3

also have some two folders deep.

I:\Joe Purdy\Julie Blue\julie blue.mp3

The usb is formated with a FAT32 file system. (This should be standard woth most usb stick bought these days?

Mine is a TDK 4gig at the moment, but I have uses a sandisk 8gig one as well. I have other files on the sticks as well, some word docs and videos, these are simply ignored by the player.

I can also uplug it and it will continue from the same location when plugged back in. I havnt changed any settings on the player (Not even sure if there are any?)

The only thing I can think of is to check the file system is fat32.

----- edit------

hopefully someone with one of the hard drives will be along soon so help.

Strange problem. Do like the idea of using a HDD instead of a stick though. Which one did you get?

I would suggest the same regarding the system format. FAT 32

Mr Rider...I think for sure, as the guys are saying, you need to make certain you are using the FAT32 file system and MP3. It will kick off a treat if you do. I suspect your media is carrying WMA or one of the other heftier file systems which takes ages. That's what I found anyway. Good luck mate!

Thanks for the replies guys, botyh the stick and the harddrive are FAT32, standard format. I do have some WMA files on there , but they are mostly mpeg's.

The HD is the seagate freeagent goflex (250gig) powered by the USB, as reccommended by skoda. it fits the space perfectly.

If you guys aren't having a problem, It must by my car thats fubared :( such a shame. and it was doing so well....

someone please help me before I explode. what am I doing wrong?!

In an attempt to avert the personal pyrotechnics, there are several things you should try.

Firstly, assuming you have been using the same usb drives, the difference between one car and another would appear to be the cable. Cheap ones may only work at usb1 speed. Try another one - borrow one from the dealer, for example. Secondly, try re-formatting the usb with FAT32. It could be fragmented or corrupted. Thirdly, get hold of a known, good quality usb drive. There are some fake ones about - and yours could be one.

A further point following on from other's replies, check that you have the right audio file format - mp3. Also, ensure that you don't have a mix of formats - particularly with the same filenames.

ok: update, the stick is fat 32 but the harddrive is NTFS, so reformatting to FAT32 now... will post back to see how it goes. again , thanks for the replies.

ok, vista wont format to fat32, but only to fat 64... read the skoda manual, it will only accept fat32, and it states with alot of files the WILL be a delay, and there is a limit to layers ect! it sucks! am downloading some special software to format it to fat 32 in the hope this will make it work (but there will still be a delay!)

what a rubbish system. if fiat can do it (on a STANDARD piece of equipment) and it works instantly no matter what the media connected, why cant skoda do it on a cost option?! what is the piont of being able to connect media, if it wont play?! it defeats the whole idea having to wait 20 minutes for the system to initialise .. *sigh.

I've got a Pioneer DVD4200 and even though expensive still it takes a while to read the drive as all units got to make an index file upon startup so you cannot get away with that. As for formatting to FAT32 I had the same issue and for that there loads of freeware software to do it to any format.

You can only format stuff in Fat32 with Windows if it's less than 32GB

no thats FAT16 FAT32 was for storage size higher than 32gig...... (wikipedia..)

well fiat have no delay on their blue & me (it picks up instantly even half way through a song where you left off when you turned off ), so it can be done  ... but as you say software can fix it (every bit of human knowledge on the web and all) I have now reformatted it to FAT32 using downloaded software, and am replacing my music (approx 30 gig) will report back if the MDI will accept it.....

edit: if there is still a 20 minute delay to playing the media, I will complain to skoda as "not fit for purpose" and see if there is any kind of update available.... :wonder:

I don't know what a normal delay is for USB headunits in general but at the moment I have a JVC. It was one of the first cheaper USB headunits and I've had it about 5 years. Doesn't like any sticks bigger than 16Gb so I just use a 4Gb which I find at the moment is plenty. When it's inserted there's at max a 10 second delay before music plays. If I leave it in the delay is about the same but only sometimes will it pick up where it left was. Most of the time it goes back to the beginning. It handles multiple folders and plays mp3's and WMA if I want it to.

Could it perhaps be a fault with the headunit itself? Not sure if the MDI itself is anything special. Thought it was just a cable.

30 gig of music.... 250gig potential... and NO DELAY!!!!

WOOT! I've done it! at the end of the day it was simply getting the format to FAT32.. I also have WMA files that play ect, all good... as you say about 10 second delay before playing begins.... my old 8 gig memory stick may have been to blame for the previous delay (though it worked in the fiat) the skoda recomended drive now works perfect with just a few seconds to initialise, and I have it loaded with 30 gig of music (6000 odd tracks) and almost limitless space for more considering the small ammount of space used... SO happy I have it working.....

took some bloody effort though , using "old" tech (especialy as the seagate freeagent will also utilise USB3) , but now happy , I have effectively 250 gig of music storage for the media system

anyone has any problems, PM me and I'll help :)

Well at least all the frustration is over. ;)

lol... yeah, I get wound up about essentially trivial things :S swmbo always tells me, doesn't make any difference though!

Bull and china shop springs to mind! Lol

lets be honest though, with fiats blue & me (which includes voice control and hands free) you can plug anything into the existing USB sockets and it will work..

with skodas optional MDI interface, you have to buy the appropriate lead, and most things you plug in WONT work, and you have to pay for another option if you want phone connectivity...

still abit poor.

Glad its sorted, so far have been very impressed with the whole MDI/Audio System

All you need now is a Bolero or Columbus with 6.5" touch screen display so your can naivigate easliy through you extensive music collection.

I use a ipod classic with 100gig of music on and the big touch screen display make a world of difference.

Cheers

I see that the CD player is for MP3's only, my music collection is mostly WMA, if I use the MDI will it play WMA?
