Vrs Insurance - young drivers

Featured Replies

Apologize if this has been done before...

From reading on here, i understand there is a range of age, for the owners of the vrs. But from those who are young drivers (around 20), have posted very reasonable prices for your insurance. I am currently 19, nearly 20 and am hopefully picking up my vrs in 2-3 weeks. The lowest i can get on compare the market is ~£2000. This could be because I'm a student at uni? and i live in Hertfordshire - in welwyn garden city. The policy is in my name. I don't have any no claims bonus, and i am adding my mother with 15+ year NCB as a named driver. Car be kept on drive or in garage over night - what ever is cheapest.

Anyway, if possible could someone explain how so many young drivers are getting low insurance? and what company it is with?

Cheers, many thanks in advance Max.

your quote sounds about right considering your age and circumstances...

did you not look into quotes before you bought it. I dont pay much for my insurance due to age and no claims etc, but i still check everytime

Having 0 years no claim and being a student is what's going to hurt you. If you have 2 years or above and say your a professional will reduce it a great deal.

Check your Postcode Risk area here.

Put 2 good named drivers if you can.

Admiral/Elephant (same company) are always best. Aviva can sometimes be reasonable.

Im also a student living at home, 21 years old, commuting to work and uni, policy declared in my name with 4 years no claims (non transferable from Admiral which is a pain), also have my parents on the policy who have no claims of 20+ years each, not that they are driving it :D , also have access to another car aswell which would explain why I have been quoted £700 versus £2000.

thanks for the reply, yes i did check before i ordered and i can afford the insurance :) but was wondering if i was getting ripped off. Ty for the post code risk, cat D :( and i guess i can add my dad as a named driver too if that will reduce it. Also i do have access to another car (off road buggy) of my mum's

lol That's quite alot of money! Buy a cheaper car!!

Mine will be circa £400 ish, 8 years no claims, 27 this summer, good postcode area.

Not trying to rub it in but I'm 24 and my insurance for the vRS is £350 with all the extras (protected ncb, legal etc) ok I have 6 yrs no claims but it's me and my gf in the policy and he has had an at fault claim 2 years ago. I'm guessing it due to your age, ncb and postcode, it's not beiruit you live is it? :)

im a student and 20 years old just re-done my insurance i have two year ncb but when the policy was set it was down as only having one so after changing it it only knocked £30 off. so wouldn't worry bout ncb to much.

i have both mum and dad on as named drivers, dad with full no claim but a few points and mum with only 1 year ncb, mine is 740 something with elephant fully comp with excess at 400( this is on an older fabia tho). think next lowest price on compare sites was around 1200. dunno if yours will be higher with being newer car.

so elephant seem a good bet like said before.

but my advice is to go on comparison sites and play around with voluntary excess and annual mileage. this sort of thing can sometimes make it vary alot i have found

owen

When I was at college (long time ago) the practice was to buy an old banger and keep it in a farmers field. Insure it third party but never drive it. After 3 years, get a "good car" and insure it comprehensive with three years NCB under our belts. Not sure if it was "correct" but it got our generation onto the NCD ladder.

Memories

Haha, thanks everyone for the response, i forgot to mention that i drive around in a citroen saxo atm and to insure that in my name with the same policy would cost me £1350 so in my mind the insurance is one of the biggest yearly prices i would have to pay anyway.

In this reasoning, for people to say buy a banger, i say i have already got one and been driving it for 3 years and bored as hell with it. I dont drink/smoke/do drugs, thus how am i have to have fun? in my experience i like to drive. Thus all the money i have saved i think its fair to say ill spend it on something i really want. And the VRS as been said many times before is great performance for price, and 'ok' insurance from my point of view - if i was to have a ford focus ST it would cost 7k insurance!

...... for people to say buy a banger, i say i have already got one and been driving it for 3 years .....

Hi - my "Banger" approach was based on your first post

..... I don't have any no claims bonus .....

but it may be because you were driving under your mother's policy.

You must have a hell of a part time job as a student ordering a brand new vrs and thinking its ok to pay £2K plus on insurance.

Where do i sign up? :D

it must be to do with the fact its an automatic an has 5 doors or something like that becauseim 20 paying £1500 on my 1.6 polo gti 125bhp but yet to insure myslef on the vrs its about £700 odd. strange :S

If you hold a part time job and you are a student, are you legally allowed to put down occupation instead of student? Would have thought that would reduce it by a large amount.

I'm 23 and I pay £380 fully comp with 4 years no claims. £70 more than my punto. I put it down to engine size and safety based technology on the car.

Just another reason to buy a vRS

Depends if you lot are fully comp, protected no claims, legal cover etc etc.

Mine is all singing and dancing protection, like a condom really.

Mine is going up slightly because I'm not a student. Can't work that out. I just work in a warehouse.

I would put yourself down as employed rather than a student that should help a lot not sure its 100% legal but £2000 should be illegal lol i was paying that on my gti and never again.

Im paying 800 a year with 2 years ncb and kept on a drive and i only have my dad as a named driver and i dont live in a particularly good area either.

so my advice is fiddle around with your details on comparison websites keep close to the truth but you can reduce it.

also pass plus might help

I'm 20 (as of January), will have 2 years NCB by the time the car arrives. Admiral are quoting me 2nd best prices next to elephant but that's by about a fiver so I'll just transfer the policy with Admiral. I'm getting quoted £625 with both my parents on the policy. That's without the Multi-car policy we currently have as I've only checked on confused.com and can't add the multi-car. £625 is also cheaper than what I am to insure my Corsa. Best of luck getting the insurance down mate! It's disgusting what they can charge you!

I'm 21, a student and I have had a previous claim 2 and a half years ago. I've got 0 NCB and this is my first policy. Got both my parents on and it's costing me £740 for a year. My postcode is classed as C also. I don't see much difference between us lol.

Well I think i'll be reviewing mine as I live in an A rated postcode area, got 8 years NCB and have the misses on as a 2nd driver and its £450 ish. Might fiddle around with the figures a bit...

21, 2 years no claims, 2 years exp, fully comp 7000miles a year "limit"

2005 Skoda Fabia mk1 1.2 Classic = £542 PA

2011 Skoda Fabia mk2 1.4 VRS = £612 PA

2011 Seat Ibiza mk5 1.4 Cupra = £520 PA

2011 Seat Ibiza mk5 1.4 Bocenegra - £1245 PA

Needless to say Insurance companies can go **** themselves.

Charging me LESS for a car that is 4 times more powerful, yet a car with IDENTICAL mechanical components is slightly more due to having two more doors? and then to finish it off the sheer cheek to charge double for red interior stitching and a black front bumper.

That Cupra / Bocanegra price beggar's belief.

Its shocking.

I know young drivers get hit with higher premiums as we are more likely to claim, or cause a claim. Fair doo's thats backed up by years of statistics and what have you.

I would expect the common decency to have consistency with insurance prices, its no wonder people have such a dislike for insurance if quotes for small engined, cheap cars are more expensive than 180bhp turbo charged Hot Hatches.

I honestly cannot believe they charge you on average twice as much for red interior stitching, instead of white and a bit of black paint.

Then again, maybe I shouldn't complain 'cause that is cheap insurance for a hot hatch ;)

For reference for competitors in this category:

Corsa VXR £1600+

Polo GTi (same car essentially) £615, no change depending on 3/5 door version.

Citroen DS3 DSPORT 1.6l £476

I got £625 for the Fabia and 2600 for a Corsa VXR. Was the main contributing factor for me choosing the Fabia and in the end, I think i'd pick it over the corsa even if the insurance was okay!
