Guard X, paint protection

Featured Replies

sorry i know there was a thread about autoglum and other paint protections recently, but...

My local dealer is offering guard x for £299 and wondering if it was worth this (probably not) and how much is a 'reasonable' price or how much is it 'worth' paying?

P.S. my car arrives tomorrow at the dealer and will take a week before i can collect for them to register and stuff they tell me!

Cheers max

Sorry, but if you pay that for it, you are mental :o

For that kind of money, you could have your car detailed by a professional to a much higher standard (dealerships often don't apply products like this correctly).

Alternatively, if you are reasonably hands-on for this sort of thing, you can look after the car yourself with the occasional wax or sealant session. They do exactly the same thing, and you'll save so much money and get the satisfaction of doing it yourself. For inspiration, take a look at Baker21's threads in the Styling and Car Care section (where there is lots of other useful information that might help you out).

i had superguard on my original furby and for a while it was nice but once it aged a bit it made it hard work to keep shinny, it wont last forever and wears off at different rates depending on how hard you wash/wipe etc.

personally i wouldnt recommend such stuff but each to their own, o'd probably take Leodhasach's advice

Max...I use Supagard and it's brilliant. My car is 3 years old almost and the paint finish is still just like new with loads of shine. The cost to me when I bought my car brand new was £150 instead of £250. This included the interior of the car to. A recent cup of coffee spilled into the passenger seat left my seat fabric without any damage or stains at all so glad I had that done. The coffee just sat on top of the fabric waiting to be mopped up! Thanks to Supagard (a very similar product to GardX I understand) damage to my paintwork was minimised recently when my car had an incident in the body shop oven after having a spray job when a ladder fell on my car. The garage reapplied my Supagard free of charge too to the affected area. Bottom line, I have no swirls marks, no fading and the paint is smooth to the touch...no roughness! If you can get the price down that would be good though. I think £299 is a bit over the top.You could do it yourself but do you know what to do? It's not rocket science but it takes a bit of grafting to do properly. The trick is to properly de-wax your car first and then apply with the appropriate technique. I watched mine being done, at least the preparatory work. It took a long time and the guy doing it was a professional Supagard technician that the garage gets in to do it. He was soaked in sweat afterwards! I don't mind paying for that sort of work.

See if you can Google it cheaper and see if stealer will match it mate.

My local Dealer Guard X the wife's Vrs for Free,

No Guard X for Free = No Sale......and we got the care kit thrown in

Try it........

Had GardX on a Citroen C5, dit not rate it at all and to keep the warranty running you need to add top up treatments. Didn't give as good a shine as a normal polish/wax would and soon stopped beading water off. You are not supposed to use polishes or waxes on top of GardX

The Autoglym Lifeshine treatment is much better, gives a finish like a good wax and you can use any of Autoglym's products on top. I found a local autoglym specialist valeter to do the treatment for £120 and he recommended just using Autoglym Aquawax now and again. Didn't do any treatments through winter other than normal washes. Had the autoglym valeter redo my car in March, full exterior clean and Aquawax treatment for £30 and the cars as good as new.

I look after my car and like it to look nice and enjoy cleaning and waxing but I'm no obssesive detailer, I think the lifeshine is good for people like me. If you just chuck a bucket of water over the car every week or two the whole life of the car and never wax or polish then the Supagaurd treatments may be better.

If you like to spend money on top notch car treatments and like nothing better than to spend the weekend with a clay bar the you shouldn't consider any treatments.

Cheers

Lee

My dealer offered me Supagard for £299 when I ordered.

Once I read about it plus found the kit could be bought on ' the No1 auction site ' I declined. The Gard X and Auto-glym kits can be bought too.

Much depends on how much time you are prepared to spend.

I certainly don't wash every week, more like every 3 - 4 weeks and I'm happy to spend the time doing a thorough clean then polishing 3 or 4 times a year.

What ever you decide you want to get your car protected ASAP.

After the responses to my thread here

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/195461-new-car-polishing-and-protection/page__view__findpost__p__2335442__fromsearch__1

I bought Supagard Fabric protector and Alloy wheel protector plus a tin of Collinite 476s then applied spending probably at least 8 hours total over the first weekend including taking each wheel off so coated all over.

Yesterday I washed my car and the insects came off really easily. I then put on the third coat of Collinite. I plan to apply another in a couple of months before a week on the coast with salt air and seagull droppings to contend with.
