Sony has revealed that all its details held for all its PSN subscribers have been stolen, its been classed as a massive data leak and why PSN was shut down recently. They also cannot be sure that the credit card details have not been stolen.

Oops.

Been reading lots about this recently. Very interesting, and it all seems to stem back to the PS3 being hacked.

Certainly makes the "Open PSN" vs "Closed XBL" argument a lot more interesting.

I feel a bit sorry for Sony...it could have happened to Microsoft though. I'm sure people will be saying haha, XBL is better etc but I'm pretty sure it could well have happened to that too?

When you consider XBL has been running a couple of years longer than PSN (due to XBL being on the original xbox for ~3 years), and the only real weakspot i've read about is phishing, i would expect XBL to be better.

I would too, but I would have expected Sony to be on top of security. It does kind of show that no matter how big or small you are, no one is safe!

No such thing as perfect security. But Sony should have had all the card holder data encrypted.

Banks could audit and fine Sony under the PCIDSS but I've no idea if they would. The rules are pretty flexible when you deal with the really big players. I'd suspect Sony have known for as long as the network has been down. And it's been down for 7 days.

XBL will be getting attacked everyday, even if it doesn't hold credit card information.

Despite the slagging they get MS actually has access to some pretty hot security technology and they've been a prime target a lot longer than Sony. If their security wasn't top notch XBL would be off-line half the year every year.

We could find out yet it was an inside job or a configuration error somewhere, or due to off-shoring some part of the system to India etc to save cash. Sony will want to cover up as much as possible to preserve their share price. They won't care too much about customers right now, if you've got a PS3 you're locked into their network and subscription system same for XBL. Unless you want to change console, buy new games etc, they know you'll be back.

Sticking a rootkit onto their CDs made a lot of people angry but didn't actually dent Sony much.

Expect security to be a big feature when the PS4 is launched and for the next Xbox too. It'll be BS too.

Known vulnerability, no IDS or IPs, details not encrypted, logs not active/ monitored/ protected

Security on the cheap.

Nice to know that you spend billions on Sony products but their security is on par with a corner shop internet seller.

SCEE have just announced the compensation package for Eeuropean PSN account holders;

(taken from blog.eu.playstation page yesterday)

All existing PlayStation Network members will be able to access the following from PlayStation Store*:

Two PS3 games from the following list:

* LittleBigPlanet

* Infamous*

* Wipeout HD/Fury

* Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty

* Dead Nation*

For those with PSP accounts, you will also be eligible to download two PSP games from the following list:

* LittleBigPlanet PSP

* ModNation PSP

* Pursuit Force

* Killzone Liberation*

- 30 days free PlayStation Plus membership for non PS Plus subscribers*

- Existing PlayStation Plus subscribers will be given 60 days free subscription.

- For existing Music Unlimited subscribers, you will be given 30 days free subscription.

- We are working on a Welcome Back offer in PlayStation Home and will share that when it is confirmed.

I would like to thank all of the developers and publishers involved in this programme for their support in making this happen. We certainly couldn’t have done it without you.

You will be able to access this content once PlayStation Store comes back online and we are doing everything we can to make that happen as soon as possible.

Thank you for your support and keep checking back on the blog for more information.

1. For eligibility for the welcome back programme consumers must be an account holder on 20 April 2011. Specific details about these offers and eligibility requirements will be posted as the services go live. All existing PSN registrants have 30 days from when the welcome back programme goes live to redeem their content.

2 & 3 Relate to German users..

4. Access to the 30 days free PS Plus subscription is only available for those countries where PS Plus is offered. You will have access to the PS Plus content planned for May for 30 days. Access to the free games and exclusive features finishes at the end of the 30-day subscription period. Anything you buy with exclusive discounts, dynamic themes and premium avatars are yours to keep forever.

Don't suppose it helps those users that had their credit cards rinsed by those scumbag hackers but for the rest of us at least it's better than nothing

The choice of games could have been better. But we shouldn't have expected anything else, they offer outdated games and free 30 days access to PSN+ which sucks anyway as I currently have it. if I'm honest I doubt I will use my ps3 for much gaming now except for uncharted 3 but apart from that there ain't much else coming out that I will use it for. The whole thing has been a shambles and I will never trust a Sony online service again :thumbdown:

I've either got or I'm not interested in what we are supposed to be getting for free. I wouldn't mind in the next month or so getting a proper new PS3 game for free and a load of old cool PS titles for free (Spyro, Croc, Rayman, etc). Won't cost them much to do. The so many days of PS+ as has been pointed out is a bit of a con. For those who don't have PS+ they then have to keep it up if they want to access the "free" content.

I'm still a bit burnt out and disillusioned with games at the moment and with PSN being out for as long as it has hasn't helped. Summer is almost here and all my hobbies and new hobbies have started so gaming isn't going to get a look in for a while. Provided the outage was for the reason that they wanted to make everything as secure as possible then fair enough but I still think we should have a damn good compensation package though.

Realistically the next game I'll be buying will be Uncharted 3

I get like that at times.

I find stepping away from the console for a while is always good. Otherwise i get my achievement wh##e on, and playing some silly, fun, kids games for a while.

I bought Trivial Pursuit for this reason :giggle: I drew the line at Hannah Montana though
