Speed Gun Question

Featured Replies

I was coming to the end of a dual carrigeway, a dopey one where it comes to a sudden end and down to a single lane when I noticed the Police out with the 'hairdryer'. I was doing about 65/67mph(deffo under 70) as I approached the end of the dual carrigeway. They never came after me or anything but was just wondering do they have to or are those 'hairdryer' style cameras at their own discretion? or can I expect a fine and points in the post?

usually if its a hand held one like that someone would have been waiting to pull you further along. So youll be fine

Danny

I agree with Danny if you had been a Naughty they would have pulled you over, shown you the camera footage and shook your hand and waved you on your way. Nice people really especially when Fighting Crime, Which the most heinous of all is Driving. Not sure how Muggers Rapists Gangsters Theifs and others can sleep at night knowing the Boys in Blue are Fighting real Crime.

I've got to completely disagree with you on that one. Are you suggesting that no police should be out on the road? That would mean that people who use mobile phones, are drunk, don't wear seatbelts, no tax or insurance etc would be very unlikely to be caught.

Traffic cops are there for more than just speeding....

I tire of hearing the old chestnut that they should be 'out catching real criminals'

Maybe if drivers behaved themselves there wouldn't be any need for traffic cops

No you'll be fine however two lanes don't just suddenly go into one there would have been plenty of signs warning you beforehand.....

Police have a difficult job made harder by a lot of bureaucratic nonsense maybe you should be an observer one day and see what it's 'really' like and why they have speed enforement and Roads policing out and about. Quite often it will be them catching criminals who travel on our roads!

Believe it or not some of those will be rapists, muggers and murderers..

If you were over the limit, they'd still have a set limit for anyone they'd be after well above the limit.

So for 60, they may only be after anyone doing 70+ regardless of acpo guidance. Certainly true for these parts. Sometimes upto 15mph is accepted.

Have heard of the laser hand-helds giving false reading because the laser glances around the angles on the car, one moment on the bumper the next on the windscreen.

I'd rather see the cops pulling people for tailgating etc than speeding. Normally they're out with the speed detection gear at spot where it would be safe to do 140mph or (up our way certainly) they pick the one piece of road that is safe for overtaking on a bad route so they get everyone booting it to get past a caravan etc.

I thought they had to pick roads where there was a known accident blackspot?

I've yet to see them outside a school, park or residential area.

They sit outside a school near me, probaly because it's at the bottom of a hill and changes from 60 to 30 at the top of the hill, quite easy to not notice your doing 35ish as you come round the bend after the hill, there is a designated spot at the top of the hill for the van to park but they choose the bottom inbetween parked cars just after a blind bend so you can't see them

Okay then I appologise for saying ---------------(Which the most heinous of all is Driving. Not sure how Muggers Rapists Gangsters Theifs and others can sleep at night knowing the Boys in Blue are Fighting real Crime.)-----------. I will rephrase I have no problem with Traffic Cops doing their jobs, getting caught speeding by a Traffic Car is a fair Cop, getting caught speeding by a Cop sitting just past a speed reduction sign is sickening, you know from 60 down to 30 in traffic would cause major accidents if everybody breaked at the sign. If Driving isnt the most heinous crime its the one that makes the most money has the biggest conviction rate, You do not hear of drivers getting a warning like the theif or mugger, Easy crime easy money no effort. And all the people who say don't speed wind your necks in because nobody is perfect.

I think its 10% +1mph what ever the speed limit is... so in a 60mph limit your aloud 67mph...

Same as Gadgetman over 70mph then they would take you... If they clocked you at 68mph in a 60mph limit you could take them to court and probably win save you the whole 3 points and £60 fine!

I got caught speeding back in 2009... I sat behind a car for 15 miles at about 45/50mph in a 60mph limit... the chance came to get passed them so I made sure I was passing them and floored it not realizing at the end of the straight the traffic police were there... they clocked me at 75mph but also told me that I was probably doing 85mph which I know I wasn't... They never tell you that you could have been doing 65mph its always more!

Its all about +/- speed camera's are not as accurate as everyone makes them out to me

your allowed 10%+1 to allow for the difference in speedo's as they're not all accurate(doesn't mean you can do 78 down the motorway though as your speedo may be out to start with so you'll be doing more) if your caught doing 10%+2 you get to go to a seminar and won't recieve any points(still get the fine though) anything more is a fine+points and over 100mph is supposed to be instant ban.(although I was lucky, only time I've been stopped for speeding I got a warning even though the copper told me I was doing in excess of 120mph) all depends on the cop that stops you I suppose.

Is the 10% + whatever up to the local forces to decide, and not law, or a set thing across the whole country? I seriously doubt you`d get caught doing 8 MPH over the limit and go to court and successfully argue it was perfectly fine for you to do that.

Matt

ACPO recommendation actually was speed limit plus 10% plus 2 mph, but they have discussed upping this at their recent national conference.

And I'm sorry, but there should be no need to brake as you approach a speed limit sign, you should be able to see them far enough away to allow the car to slow down naturally so that you pass the sign at the limit.

The 30 limit I was refering to is just after another downhill section so no choice but to brake for that as you can't see it till you go over the brow of the hill by which time your heading downhill at 60 with a 30 limit at the bottom

Thanks folks. Was just wondering as it's only a matter of weeks since a car with Provida on board was behind me and got me at 78 in a 60! I know, I know I should of learnt my lesson!!

It's called observation. That means looking at the road, not your satnav, the cd, the fags...

I suggest you need to take a few lessons with the IAM or RoSPA, and perhaps change your views. Nobody has said they are perfect.

You're not actually allowed.

ACPO issue guidance that people shouldnt be prosecuted for +10% +2mph over the limit, but some forces may operate different allowances over the limit. Some often have zero tolerance or lower than ACPO guidance IE in 30mph limits, outside schools or in areas with a death (usually pedestrian) attributed to speed.
