On a long slightly down hill autopista I wound my superchipped /cupra intake /green filter vrs up to over 4,700rpm in 6th ie some 500 revs past peak power, speedo was off clock. If top gear was higher at say 35/1000rpm a remapped vrs should have no trouble hitting 150mph given a long enough stretch of road. The standard cars vmax is a result of the lower gearing rather than power, as larger, heavier cars from the vw group have higher quoted top speeds.

errr.... No, I dont think so... ~165/170bhp isnt enough for a guaranteed 150mph. Wind resistance goes up logarithmically and 135/140 is a push, let alone 150...

Just my opinion. I have a Germany trip set for the summer, so i'll report back...

my VRS goes 1million mph...thats because i dont have one yet, but i do when i dream :), viewing a Black 04 Vrs with 36k

This is correct. Double the speed, square the drag.

170bhp is good enough for 140mph but not 150mph

We dont agree on many points but we do here.

Most people think its only 10mph - but at those speeds the air resistance is very significant.

Id assume that for most cars (ave drag coefficient) to reach 150mph you will need in excess of 275bhp.

If you class "most cars" as being saloon, hatchbacks or estates, then yeah.

Anything low or Coupe or smaller has a better chance. FIAT Coupe or Audi TT or Alfa GTV. They're all fast coupes, have low co-ef of drag and also important, a small x-sectional area.

Want a car capable of efficient 150mph, buy a Calibra and stick a CR or PD unit in it. :D:rolleyes:

Well my car std Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo had 220bhp and did 155mph - proved by Autocar in its first ever test.

I agree with your above post - as coupe's do not have that high a % of total car market share.

Im not sure of the top speed of the Audi TT 225 but I'd be certain its a fair bit higher than that of the Leon CR.

They use the same engine, so are the same. With the Leon being slightly higher, but your knowledge of cars and performance is limited of course. A Coupe will not do 155  More like 130, downhill.

I had an old lancia thema turbo that would do 150 mph :) lowest drag in its class at the time, and 220 bhp (same engine that was in the fiat coupe before the 20v....)

edit: think shifty wil vouch for this ;)
