Android - Memory Management

Featured Replies

Getting fed up of every so often my HTC Desire telling me it's low on phone memory. Every app that can be is on the card. I clear the data from Twitter, Facebook and Tweetdeck regularly but it still happens. Is ther an easier way of finding out what is using the phone memory up rather than just a list of the installed apps?

Have you got a custom ROM installed?

A2SD is one of the best things about a rooted Android as you can install all apps on the SD even if they don't support it

Still on the standard ROM (Froyo 2.2) and will be for a little bit longer.

The only apps installed on the phone are

Swype - 12.44MB

Maps - 10MB

Facebook - 5.48MB

Speedometer - 4.52

Tweetdeck - Currently 3.88MB

Twitter - 3.6MB

Tapatalk - 3MB

That's it. I'm thinking that somewhere is draining memory. What apps use more memory over time?

I have an HTC Desire which I've rooted, I have 303mb of internal space, loads of apps installed and still have 58mb of space left. Here's how I did it...

Rooted my phone using unrevoked: http://unrevoked.com/#desire

Repartitioned the internal memory: http://www.alpharev.nl

Installed CyanogenMod: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/

A2SD is another way to go but I found things loaded too slow.

I have often wondered if the desire with all that memory ever needs to be defragmented...or does that not happen

No need to defrag SSD. Defrag is only really needed for mechanical drives to reduce the time the head has to move across the disc to grab the fragmented parts of the files.

I binned Swype as just too big for what it does for this very reason.

Shazam is in its way too.

Or you could try this;

I did this as soon as I got my phone but didn't want to root it just in case something went wrong. Took only a couple of minutes to do and freed up a lot of system memory.

You still have the issue of all the bloatware on there but almost everything aftermarket you can install on it is forced to SD. Not experienced any problems whatsoever with forced Apps not working either.

Even Maps & widgets work ok? Or do certain apps still only load to the phone?

I've not checked on how much space it uses but would consider this a fantastic must have app.

Everything I've tried on it works.. and I've tried an awful lot of apps

Even when apps are installed onto the SD card they still use a certain ammount of internal memory too.

Unless you have a lot of apps just a simple root procedure and enable A2SD (install A2SD script) should be just fine for you.

I've done the whole re-partitioning of the internal memory and found it a bit faffy when updating roms etc.
