Traded the Z4 & got a VRS

Featured Replies

Hello.

Just changed my Z4 to a red 57 plate VRS diesel with the news of my first child.

Needless to say, I'm really impressed with the quality, practicality and performance. It's a real all rounder!

Mine has hands free, cruise control and 6 stack boot CD player.

I've just bought the colour coded rear parking sensors which I'm going to fit this week after taking some 'big balls' tablets.

I've got someone coming to my house to remap it next Monday then its in for it's cambelt service, prematurely but you can never be too sure.

I'm a bit confused why my mpg on the dash remains on 43mpg despite, slow and enthusiastic driving?? The real time mpg does change though?

What is the point in the boot release button when you have to press the boot release on the car to open it anyway!? Is it to prevent unlocking all the other doors in case of thieving scum?

Can I have 'coming home lights' installed and the 'anti carjack' installed?

Sorry to rabbit on....

The 43mpg is probably your long term average, you can reset this by pushing and folding the reset button on the underside of the right hand stalk.

Congrats on your purchase, good choice!

Enjoy your new car. Sorry I can't help with your queries.

I'm looking forward to hearing how you get on with your new car given you've moved over from a 2 seater sports car. I'm fast coming to the conclusion that much as I love my S2000 I need something that is more economical to run (fuel, insurance and road tax are on the high side) - and more practical given my passion for horsepower extends to the four legged variety too.

I like sporty VAG group cars, so am looking around at what Skoda can offer. (And yes diesels can be sporty as I'm sure you're finding out. My Dad has our much loved Ibiza 1.9 TDI Sport on long term loan and she's a hoot to drive).

Coming home lights and anti-hijack can be easily activated by a friendly forum member with VAG.COM, if you narrow down your location slightly someone might be able to suggest someone to contact.

If you have the sensor for auto lights it should be possible to set the lights to only come on at night, otherwise they'll simply come on whenever you lock/unlock the doors.

Issue with the boot release is simply that the boot is too heavy I think. On mine if you catch it as soon as it pops it'll lift right up, otherwise as you say you have to hit the button again on the boot. Main benefit really is so you can unlock the boot without the rest of the car, and then when you shut it, it'll lock itself again automatically, so make sure you never put the keys down inside the boot!

Thanks and I'll reset it! Cheers

Buying the VRS was an economic and forced choice due to the on route kid!!

Tax is only £150, not £450 like the S2000 (dependent on age) diesel is expensive to buy but the car should average between 45-50mpg so if you're doing anything over 10,000 per year, it's the obvious choice.

I thought the transition would be far worse from the Z4 to 'the family hatch' but what you compromise on kudos, the Octavia makes up with performance/ economy, absolute comfort and reliability.

Off the line performance isn't as good as the Z4 with the limited diesel Rev range but mid and top end grunt is exceptional.

I looked at getting a BMW 320d M Sport which without a doubt looks better than the Octavia IMHO. But..... They're far more common and you'll pay another 3k+

premium for a similar year/ mileage and spec.

Mine gets remapped this Monday taking it to circa 200bhp so performance isn't an issue.

In summary, if you're not too hung up on street cred, this is a great car for the money as it combines so much. It's such a good drive, the interior is brilliant, you won't regret it ;)

Thanks. Mine doesn't have auto lights so in your opinion, do you think it's worth doing?

I'm in Doncaster too which I'll update ;). Anyone with VAG.com live near??

I reckon so, just had mine sorted in the same way. They come on when i unlock the car. During the day you don't even notice, and it's handy at night.

If you head to the Diagnostics & VCDS forum there's a pinned topic with loads of willing members and their locations listed.

You have made a good choice. I was considering getting a Z4 or TT as a fun car but the Octy's load carrying capability and economy in relative terms in pricing of comparable cars along with the performance of diesel or petrol VRS is just too good to ignore.

I really was dreading getting rid of the Z4 because it was such a fun, smile on your face car. If money was no object, I'd have kept the Z4 too, but I'm confident I've made a sound choice with the vRS. It's still early days owning the vRS but I can see it's going to be a long and fun road ahead...

Enjoy the vRS, they really are fantastic cars :)

Whos remapping it for you ? Is it Danny Wilson @ GT Tuning ?

If so he will be able to do Coming Home Lights @ Anti Hi Jacking for you.

If its not danny give him a call 07716243455

He is based up at Green Lane , Scawsby At the side of Top Gear Performance if you know where that is ?

Jamie. I'm getting it mapped by angeltuning who come to your home. I've used them before so I get £75 off so it's only costing £200.

I'll ring dan and see if he can sort the lights and locks.

Thanks Jamie.

No problem mate,

You do know danny only charges £150 ??

Erm no but I'll ring him now and possibly get him to do it!! Cheers Jamie. May have just saved me £50 ;)

Coming Home lights might be a problem if you dont have the auto light function, I wanted this activating on my CR, but cant have it because I didnt order the auto light function.

You should find the Octy boot will swallow everything you need to carry around with a baby. also check your ISO fix locations for a child seat before you go out & buy 1, & get the best you can afford, to make sure your little treasure is safe, using these will save lots of hassle trying to fit in NON ISO seats.

You get what you pay for so you pay your money and take your chances.

I understand what your saying with you pay for what you get but i can 100% vouch for danny , he mapped my 100bhp golf which i had over 2 years and never missed a beat and he has mapped my current ibiza which is running perfect and had it rolling roaded at 184bhp

If you can get to Mansfield, Ben at Shark Performance can do little tweaks for you.

That makes for worrying reading. How much would it cost to replace all the injectors? Is there anything I could do to avoid this happening like buying that injector cleaning stuff?!

it cost me £822 to replace one plus the wiring loom. injectors are £500 a pop plus labour to fit plus v.a.t.

if you are buying from a Skoda dealer ask them what they plan to do about the problem

Just get an aftermarket warranty that will take the worry out of it , one of my injectors failed , to replace the faulty injector and loom cost me £200 which was the excess on my policy , the policy cost me £235 so i have virtually got my costs back for this year .

it's not just the cost that's an issue. IT'S DANGEROUS. My family and friends travel in my car also. engine failure on the motorway at speed is not good. plus the inconvenience of recovery, hire car costs and lack of use whilst it's repaired.

They do not all fail the same way and cause brake /steering problems , when mine failed the car just went into limp mode and was perfectly drivable if a tad slow .

I had a Citroen Xantia which had an intermittant problem on the ECU which caused the engine to cut on the overrun and each time it happened i went through the same experience , mega heavy steering and seemingly no brakes , a real heart stopper.

I think everyone should be aware that ANY car that has power assisted steering and brakes is going to have this problem if the engine cuts and the servo pumps cannot provide assistance .

Which company and policy did you go for, out of interest?
