Towbars again

Featured Replies

Elsie the Helipad has been in at my suppling dealer since Tuesday first thing, and there is still no sign of getting her back....

I was wondering how long does it take to install a towbar and electrics on a Yeti with towbar preparation.

They are supposed to be checking the DSG gearbox oil level and my dipping n/s mirror and maybe changing the o/s foil as it is coming off, at the same time, but 3 days before I can collect her?

Seems a little excessive to me.

I know. I don't have the time or inclination to do it myself these days. Or anywhere to do it other than out in the open emoticon-0149-no.gif

How much mate for the TB fit if you don't mind me asking?

Mark

Probably several hours, since it means stripping the bumper off, removing the rear internal bar, fitting the tow bar, removing some of the rear trim for the electrics, then putting it back together and reprogramming the electrics.

But 2+ days?

should be around £800, but I'm expecting it to be less as I have the towbar preparation.

If they have taken one of the foils off, it is possible this has damaged the paint, so that has to be rectified.

You could try ringing them to ask??

I will speak to James in the morning and see if he can tell me what is happening.

aerofurb if you could get hold of him would be the one to ask; Tibetan Monster had the factory tow prep and the installation of the bar + electrics was undertaken by our respective supplying dealer.

Hope they get everything sorted for you and Elsie is home soon

Said dealer (the lovely James) fitted mine too - though I suspect not personally :giggle: . Five hours labour is quoted on the official order form but car was there for 3 days if memory serves. They did not glue the inner clip of the bottom hatch door properly on mine so it had to go back. So I suspect they are doing it to the book on yours and using the proper resin (and not double sided tape) that needs to set for 24 hours. And in that time they can't move the car to do anything else with it.

Patience!

So what are you going to tow first?!

The double sided tape they used on mine lasted for 5 minutes, I removed the panel, and the inner ring fell out.

I used clear silicon gasket myself, and it's solid.

If they had just read the fitting instructions that come with the towbar it tells them the part number of the resin! Mine was already lose when I collected it but both James and I thought we were just not fitting the hatch properly as it was raining and we did not want to keep fiddling in the rain! But so far the fix (whatever it might have been!) has been fine!

I hope they are not cutting another hole. I have one already as I have towbar prep - remember you looked at it........emoticon-0144-nod.gif

5 hours spread over 3 days.......

Ah............ indeed!!!!!! And I did look at it! doh So no curing time! In that case the problem must be with one of the other bits you asked for! And remember that five hours INCLUDES for the installation of the hatch. So your job should really be more like 3 hours I'd say...

1 hour per day then............emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

It sounds like they are doing it them selves and not a sub-contractor. Maybe they are learning to do it on MY caremoticon-0149-no.gif

Oops...... mine was done by the sub-contractor.

I am now back in possession of Elsie the Helipad. She has a detachable towbar now fitted. Now I need to find a caravan to check the electrics are working correctly. Allams don't have a caravan on site to use as a test bed!

Because I wanted split charging charging, this is what appears to have caused the delay, as Skoda UK initially said that it can't be done on anything other than an 'E'. make of that what you want.....

Eventually they decided it could be done.....seeing as several people on here have this facility I should think so too!

As I thought they were fitting it themselves and not using a sub-contractor.

It all looks OK and works, as in I can fit the hitch and take it off. It even came with a pair of gloves and a bag to put the hitch in, plus the keys. It all feels secure. Oh yes, it also came with the 'new' bracket as well.

I would have thought that split charging was a given for a caravan. As regards the comment about it only being available for the E what is the towbar prep all about then?

As you say others have had it done and some able bodied owners have even fitted their own.

In my case, having phoned James, I have just had a phone call back to say that the parts are now available and he is arranging fitting (loan car provided). :)

Hopefully I should soon be a mobile chicane again soon. B)

Glad you're getting it sorted Fred.

I have followed the threads on tow-bar fitting with interest since placing my order for a 140 Elegance DSG (with tow-bar prep) on 6th October. I have now ordered mine to be fitted after I pick up my car next week and have been quoted £432 for the Westfalia detachable tow-bar, fitted and wired with 13 pin socket and 7 pin adapter, at home by Autoroofs of Leicester. They have been used by my local Skoda dealer for some time and were highly recommended. I have no idea how long they will take however, but thought it worth mentioning since the cost is about the lowest I have found. I live about 20 miles from Leicester so, I would imagine that they cover the East Midlands area.

I'll report back when the job is done.

I have just had the Westfalia detachable tow bar fitted by the Skoda dealer in Bordeaux - although the plastic cover fits quite snugly I think that I will look at making an extra security strap to secure it just in case it were ti get "knocked off" when the tow bar is not fitted

I have had mine a year and driven it through DEEP water, DEEP mud, snow, forest tracks and everything and can assure you it is secure.

Someone call, TP?! I'm still and here monitoring as I get a chance whilst doing the paperwork trash for work. I answered rockhopper by PM. Allams fitted my towbar one Saturday morning, no problems. I had the factory prep as you said and no caravan split wiring needed so all plain and simple.

Now about that bronze (doesn't 'Terracotta Orange' sound better), black roof and Matterhorn wheels - roll on Dec 2012.......... ;)

(PS TIBET has just had the 20k service done at Allams, no probs and excellent service as normal).

Good to hear from you as always aero :)

Pleased to hear Tibet is doing fine, take it your envisaging itchy feet in the near future then :giggle: nice sounding spec by the way  Shame those Mattterhorn's are 17's; Pedestrian Monster runs far better on the 16" 215/60's than Pat did on the standard 225's, would not even contemplate running a Yeti on anything else now.

Kind regards,

TP
