Source a Turbo Charger

Featured Replies

I need to replace the Turbo on my 2004 Octy 110bhp tdi. Can anyone advise me of a good source.......secondhand/recon, anything?

Are you sure you need to replace it the turbo, or maybe it is just sticky vanes/rusty control ring, or a failed diaphragm on the actuator...

I believe a replacement new turbo, complete with manifold is about £700 from Skoda (that is what they quote me a few years ago), otherwise I think GSF/Eurocar parts also flog them.

On the recon side, no idea. You might find something on ebay/skospares.com, but you would be taking a risk with the purchase.

I believe Euro Car Parts mostly sell recon's or excahnge turbo's, same as their alturnator's and coils.

I wouldn't trust a recon or second hand unit, especially as turbo's have incredibly low tollorances, spin at hugely high speeds and can get to very high temeratures.

Unless you get a recon or second hand unit with a very good warranty, Don't even go near them!!

And as for ebay, you've been warned. I bought a second hand unit from ebay which exploded into small bits at 75MPH on the M25. Not good!!

Antoher £325 down the drain (including the fitting of the ebay turbo)

Decided to get an original OEm turbo, but it was hefty. £895 including fitment. But it did come with a 2 year warranty. The ebay buyer closed his account down just before his turbo gave way, so he must have known it was a dud! perfick!! He wasn't local otherwise I would have put his broken turbo through his letterbox!!

Anyways, just a case of being very carefull with your online purchases of course.

Did you get this done by a Skoda dealer at £895 fitted? Think my turbo is u/s and not sure what to do, the car has been cursed since I bought it last year! (110 tdi L+K) Many thanks

Fitting the turbo is not hard to do at home, so you could save some labour costs, assuming you have some basic tools to hand, if the 90/110.

What makes you say your turbo is U/S?

I always though the L&K diesel was only the 130PD engine, but guess I must be wrong.

No, same as the Elegance, 110 first, then 110 and 130PD later on.

I shall consider myself educated. I always wanted an L&K 130, but the insurance company was less keen on the idea :(

Thanks to you all for responses and thoughts. I am certain it is the waste gate seized.

A friend in the know advised me to contact The Turbo Centre. All I can say is that they were brilliant and have saved me a significant amount of cash.

The link is below for anyone with similar issues:

I did not realise the VNT fitted on diesels had a wastegate? Today has been education!

I'm pretty certain the wastegate hasn't seized. As mbames was thinking there is no wastegate.

The VNT mechanism might have siezed though...

Now that I would agree with, which means our OP needs to give us some new reasons for why he needs to source a new turbo, rather than taking the current one off and cleaning it.

Upshot is, having spoken to The Turbo Centre, they are reasonably confident that it does not need replacement given age of vehicle and mileage. They will "de-gunge" (technical term) at very reasonable cost and return it to me. In view of the circumstances the local garage and I both feel the service they offer is pretty darn good, and one to be recommended. Oh joy of joy.

I spoke to Statller in Sheffield about turbo cleaning (as they'd done a good job with my aircon compressor recently) and they said they usually send them off to a place in Wakefield to be de-gunged. Could be one and the same?

Sounds like the VNT mechanism is sticking either it's rusted up or it's coked up and you need to stop driving like a granny.

Cleaning them up at home is pretty easy, the harder/more time consuming bit is taking the actual turbo and exhaust manifold off.

I have a whole set of pictures here if you want to tackle the job yourself.

tbh: driving like a granny isn't the only reason they fail. I have come to the conclusion my n75 (or somewhere close by) has a vacuum issue, as I took the n75 off and the one-way valve and sucked/blow through it the other weekend, and since then I have not had a limp-home, and prior to that I was getting them every other day.

This is fair comment. I was advised by the fellah at The Turbo Centre that the car needs to be "driven", especially if often used around the town. My wife will be pleased that you advised her not to drive like a granny! Trouble is her false teeth might fallout is she revs too high. emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Thanks for all your comments. Will report back in the next week when the car is back on the drive.

How much is it going to cost to have it removed, sent off, cleaned and refitted?

Been enquiring and I seem to be looking in the £210 to £275 range for experienced mechanics that will remove, refit and clean all in. Don't think I'll attempt it myself. Lack of tools and experience means that I think I'd rather not be messing with tubo removals and internals.

Given the lack of bother it causes me unless I'm looking for limp mode, there's always the 'do nothing' option or another couple of ideas I have...

The Turbo Centre charge 220 (VAT included) to collect, clean, sort and return.

Removal and refitting costs depend on whether you do it yourself or use independent or skoda garage. I believe 3hrs labour is about right.

From my perspective and that of my local independent mechanic, we are pretty confident the Turbo Centre will sort it. Also, I have a friend in Skoda. He recommended the Turbo Centre to me, as he uses them regularly.

Regards.

3 hours is the dealer quoted book time to change a turbo (on the 110 at least).

Personally if you are removing (or your mechanic friend) is removing the turbo, then it is only 3 bolts to be removed to check the control rings/VNT side of things once the exhaust manifold is off the car. So you could easily save yourself £220, I cleaned mine up in about an hour or so (along with all the gunk from the inlet manifold). Hell, send me the turbo and I'll clean it up for £150

I think they do warranty the turbos they clean though. Worth considering I think.

You are all heart. I am starting to get quite emotional. Can you do it for free? Think of the deep sense of satisfaction. emoticon-0148-yes.gif
