How much does it cost to buy Satnav?

Featured Replies

Try a Garmin Nuvi 1440T http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_811451_langId_-1_categoryId_165685

Less than 1/2 original price and FREE installation at Halfords and you can drive away with the unit working.

There are cheaper units on there too, Kitten and I chose a Garmin as they also make marine navigational equipment and have been in this field for MANY years.

(expertise etc.....)

Aha, now I understand. You know that google map thing that some clever chappie did (waits for Rockhopper or 900k to say who) with all the little Yetis on, and how so many of them ended up in the sea ... Garmin satnav! :D

Ah, now is he a "Man of Kent" or a "Kentish Man"? I vaguely remember there's a difference and it's got something to do with the River Medway?

Your answer is here,

I have a 3.5 inch Tom Tom one, I also have a clip that fits in to the airvent I got of ebay for less than £10 about three years ago. The Tom Tom fits perfectly on the drivers side ventre vent, is easy to see and reach, can be removed and hideen in a couple of seconds, and I saved a fortune by not upgrading to an Elegance full fo kit I didnt want or would never use. There are many good solutions for aftermarket sat nav available, updates are easy, and I have had 7 digit post code searches for years.

I`ll bring mine down to get a pro clip next year Bob.

And as a wind up to the Man of Kent its fine when you are on an index linked government pension Andrew you`ve no worries about brass!!!

PS Do you ever go to the White Lion at Cray as my mates brother is running the place and thought we might give it a try?

Cheers

Peter :)

Oh no not the pension attack ... I have been to the White Lion once but was not overly impressed with either the warmth of the welcome or the quality of the ale. A nice, old-fashioned pub, though and obviously plenty of good walking (or even just view-gazing) round and about.

A Kentish Man - born and bred on the banks of the Thames in Gravesend: nowhere near that trickle known as the Medway ...

Buy a Tom Tom, £140, and install it in the cubby box on top of the dash, works perfectly, and easy to update the maps, hidden when you are not using it. I can't understand why anyone would pay 1500 for a built in satnav. The cubby hole lid also acts a s a good sunshade making it easier to read the screen.

Can only agree with that. Cant understand why anyone would pay way over the odds for a built in sat nav. Buy a Tom Tom or similar does the job just as well and when you go abroad and hire a car take it with you

:thumbup: +1 ... did that very thing this year - car hired from Geneva and Tom Tom took me to the ski resort!

I quite often take the sat nav with me to find where I am going, eg park at the park and ride for Nottingham, tram in instead of parking in the centre at high cost, then use the tom tom in its pedestrian mode to actually find the address on foot. Can't do that with a built in one.

Easy to take in the wifes car as well if we go somewhere in that for a change, as that means I don't have to drive!

Or get an Old O2 Orbit on ebay, it can double up as a phone and cost less than £40. It slot perfectly in where the trip computer (maxi-dot) is.

But you would need to consider a way of putting the power cable there.

True..!

I use mine most days too, but it's the 5" 1005 model.

I am getting a little worried, however, that this discussion will shortly be banned by a moderator. "How big is yours?" "4.3 inches." That's not much, mines 5 inches." "You think that's big, mines 6.5", or at least, that's what I tell the wife."

Hi mate,

What is the 1005 like?

Really pleased with it. Bought it when I bought the Yeti in January (to replace my older Tom Tom ... forgotten which model that was, Tom Tom One I think). Maps are very accurate, directions have been excellent. You can set it to automatically divert you around traffic jams, or to warn you that they exist and ask you if you want to take a diversion. The traffic info is bang up to date/very accurate. Predicted journey times are accurate to the minute ... it took me door to door from Yorksshire to the Alps in March without a hiccup. Speed cameras regularly updated and accurate. 5" screen good for my aged eyes, especially mounted on the A pillar (and there its literally at my fingertips from the steering wheel). Well pleased with the investment.

Thanks mate. You got a pic of it installed on the A piller?

Thank you!

Looks good in that position. I see there is an offer on at the mo with £50 trade in on your old unit.

How does it fix to the Brodit clamp?

The proclip kit comes in 2 parts; a proclip specific to the car, then a mount specific to the satnav model. You fix the two parts together with self tapping screws. The picture I've uploaded without the satnav mounted shows both parts fitted together.

With the 1005 the satnav then simply sits on the mount - it's magnetic.

If you go to the Brodit/proclip website you'll find two drop down menus - you enter your car details in one, your satnav details in the other, and that tells you what you need.
