Random part

Featured Replies

Hi, I have just recently bought my first Fabia VRS ago two weeks and am loving it. I was just filling the washer fluid and noticed this random part sat loose in the top of the engine bay?! I'm a novice on cars so has anyone any idea where it's from?

what material is it?

Plastic

what material is it?

Looking at the shape of the ends it looks like it's something that connects 2 rubber hoses together, I've never seen anything like that (shape or colour) in my engine bay though.

It could be that the previous owner was doing some work and just put it down in the engine bay and forgot it was in there. It might not even be part of the car, you could always contact the previous owner, they will instantly know if it's something they forgot to put back properly or if it's something that isn't part of the car.

Cheers for reply, I don't think it's off anything too serious. Hopefully, put there at random like you said.

My sisters Corsa (horrid thing!) has one of these on the battery. Theres a small pin on the underside which is uses to clip on if I remember. Dunno what it does though.

See...I said sell it on the chavhaul sites....obviously someone else has fitted one.......does it make your sisters car go very fast????? :giggle:

Nothing could make this thing go very fast to be honest! 7x bhp of pure nothing-ness. Hate it.

Heres pictures anyway, looks the same as yours. Think the battery is made by the people who sponsor Honda BTCC cars, but I can't remember them. Yuaka or something.

I'd say that was a SNAP of the OP's picture!!! So WTF does it do & where does it fit???? B)

No idea too either. Not something to do with re-filling batteries is it? (I've never had any dealing with batteries except for seeing my dad test them in their Montego when I was a child.)

The bit where it plugs in is solid, so it's not a vent etc. Edit, I think it is anyway.

it's a battery vent tube. New batteries come with blanked off positive side or negative side gas vents. VAG all use negative side vents and the adapter is black. So that will be an unused positive side vent that someone left in the engine bay to confuse you.

^^^^^^^^ At least we now know what it's for! B)

Was just gonna say I had another look, and on the side of the battery, behind the red lead in picture 2 is a red cap, which I assume is what MT is refering too.

It's the battery vent tube. On some cars there is a pipe that vents any battery gases outside the engine compartment.

Correct. Batteries 'gas' differently depending on the charging system used. Most these days vent gases at the negative side. New batteries should come with an application sheet, that states which gas vent should be used, and that blanking grommet MUST be removed or the battery can go kaboom.

Excellent, mystery solved! That all makes sense as a new battery was fitted prior to my purchase!! Thanks for input.
