Iphone4 OR HTC Desire

Featured Replies

Thinking about getting one of these. Which do people prefer and why.

I seen mention of a HTC Sensation so may get it depending on price.

Be interested to hear in particular about receiption and functionality, common faults.

Is there much trouble in transferring numbers from a Nokia 6303 to either of above? (I have used Nokia PC so have files saved but are they compatible, also found out today about making a back-up to the 6303 memory card a .NBF file, will these work with Iphones or HTC

Well if new contracts are anything to go by then Android looks to be the way forward..

From almost no market share 2 years ago - to dominant market leader should confirm it's popularity.

I personally went for the Desire myself due to the nature of it's open source platform (I like tinkering under the hood) and lovely Sense interface. At the time (1 year ago) it was best smartphone around, bar the iphone.

The iphone has probably 2-3 times the amount of apps at the moment but Android it catching up fast. I'm not a big fan of itunes as I don't like the big corporate boys telling me what I can and what I can't do, there are other apps out there that are as good, or you can even fool itunes into thinking the Desire is an ipod! And if you know where to look, most paid apps can be got hold of without parting with cash - Not that I condone that sort of thing you understand! ;)

Having said that, almost everyone at work has an iphone, but all of my friends have Android handsets.. I think Apples dominance has in part been due to careful, and clever advertising.

Reception wise, the Desire's pretty good for reception and clarity - and doesn't need some gimmicky case (as per the first iphone 4's) due to me not holding handset correctly?!

As with any smartphone - get used to the battery running out far quicker than a standard one. Get used to charging religiously everyday I'm afraid.

Not too sure about that file format .NBF. I think it may be some proprietry Nokia file format for backing up.. You should be able to export your entire phonebook as .VCF instead which is pretty standard for address book formatting. Failing that you should be able to transmit the internal phonebook from one to the other via Bluetooth.

The Desire also works perfectly in my 2011 Octy Estate, full integration with the Bolero. Couldn't be happier with it.

The sensation looks to be a great phone, although HTC have locked down the bootloader on this model (not not as hackable as other handsets). If that's mot your bag then it's still a great bit of kit.

Which desire are you looking at the original, newer S version, HD (bigger screen) or Z (flipout keyboard) ?

Which network?

SIM free or on contract?

If you need now, the either the S or HD (if you want a huge screen) get my vote. If you can hang fire until July, then the HTC Sensation will blow anything around clean out of the water just as the HTC Desire did. If I could I'd be in the queue to bag on as they look very tasty spec wise.

You could if you like, get a PAYG HTC Wildfire as a stop gap for £120 (or less via ebay) use it for a while then sell on via ebay for pretty much the same amount. That is if you are desperate to get a smartphone, want a Sensation, but cant wait that long.

I did similar when the original Desire was due to launch and for 6 weeks used a HTC Hero/G2 I bagged on ebay and sold it on for exactly what I paid for it so it cost me £0.

Newer Android HTC's from the wildfire onwards have a transfer app like Nokia have which will import almost everything from most popular handsets via bluetooth, and import them as google sync items so they are sync'd with the cloud (best option).

As Trilogy2k says, almost all the big apps are available on Android now, or are very close to arriving. Some even have added functions on Android, or have launched on Android before Apple! The Waitrose and Ocado apps being prime examples of this last year.

HTC Everytime.

As per the comments above..

I have a desire - the missus bought a Desire S - both excellent phones, don't cost the earth and won't rip you off with app costs.

Keeping this simple:

Mrs. Has iPhone 4, I have. HTC desire HD.

IPhone 4 takes crap photo's compared to my HTC's 8m pixels HD photo's. Also video's are much better.

IPhone seams to be very restricted on what you can do with it. (Apple friendly and Apple only).

IPhone has more apps though.

Htc acts more like a computer/laptop, iPhone 4 acts like it's own limited machine.

Htc can do a lot more than iPhone. Mrs said from day one, wishes she had my phone!

Oh yea, I pay £25 a month, Mrs pay £45 a month. For what? A name?

I’ve no experience with any HTC unit so I’m not going to pass comment, as I have no grounds on which to base my opinion. My iphone was my first smartphone, I can’t live without it. As for the restrictions, a quick 10 minute jailbreak on the computer can sort that out. I did mine within a week of owning it, best thing for it.

Samsung Galaxy S or Galaxy S II depending on budget.

I have both and the desire everytime for me , i can set it to do what i want and not apple , the useability if much better from the desire imo.

What must have, easy to configure and use features is it that the iPhone doesn't have and the Desire does?

I looked at both and went for Desire too. Agree with almost all of what has been said earlier by the Desire supporters.

No messing with itunes for a start , that does my head and the ability to instantly lose or add the widgets makes it more customisable for me, dont not like the iphone , its just a personal preference based on useage

I have an android based HTC phone and wouldn't pay for an iPhone in a million years but I'm still interested. There are other iOS devices after all

iPhone are just too expensive for what they are plus you're forced to use the heap of carp that is iTunes. At least with Android if for some reason you wanted to use iTunes you could.

Was having a play with an atrix over the weekend , very impressive and very quick , only irritant on the desire is the lack of in built storage , the hd appeals to me as the keyboard is bigger and i can see it better , bit bulky tho .

Seems like the phone is out of date in a few months nowadays but i have kept my desire , just works ok for me.

Hmmm...

Been offered a Desire S for £20.50 a month, 2 yr contract. Sounds like a good deal but I'm not sure if I should.

I hate mobile upgrade time...

I look at my usage and see what im paying for, i never get close to my minutes and dont go mad on texts.

I have copilot on my phone which is useful and a few games but other than that i have it because i'm old cant see very well and big screens help lol.

What deal/network?

Sounds great for me too, but I dont like 24 month contracts. 18months is my limit, and considering going SIM free next time as is SWMBO.

Vodafone.

It's an old plan with low mins but gets me a fone + 500meg data. New cheap plans only offer 250meg. I declined as it was their first offer.

Tempted by going to giffgaff for a bit

I was thinking about the sensation, but haven't seen prices yet. On contract with Three in Ireland

Giffgaff does look tempting, just worried as their bundles seem unsustainable.

SWMBO moving to a £20/month t-mobile SIM only deal.

Not sure if the following might persuade you one way or the other....

..but I just pickled up a 2010 Superb Elegance with the Columbus and BLuetooth.... which is GREAT!!!

Bad bits....

apparently Skoda Bluetooth software is NOT COMPATIBLE with HTC phones!?!?!? And neither I, nor the sales guy, nor the engineer could get it to work!!

Just a thought.

Android?

Did you make the phone discoverable when trying to pair? I know I have issues pairing with in-car kits unless the phone can be seen.

Android

Yup....and tried to search for the car from the phone....

Anyway....after a little more research: there is something called rSAP (bluetooth language maybe?) and apparently, the HTC Desire and a few other Android phones don't have it, but VW, Skoda, Porche and a couple of other manufacturers use it in their BT kits....and ALL of them have issues with Android phones.

I'll keep looking, but there must be a way....anyone here know? I'm really not that technical and reading stuff about ROOTed phones and stuff just makes me nervous! lol

I have a white iPhone 4 and I love it. Much more than my dabbling with Android (which I have always, from version 1.6 on my launch unit G1, to 2.1 on my Desire, to 2.2 on my Nexus One - I always hoped it would get better with every try I had but it didn't)

Got my iPhone now and I am sticking with it forever, easy to use, lovely screen and the hardware - jesus, it's just a steel and glass monolith. Every Korean based handset feels like a toy in comparison - I review phones with my friend on a rather large blog, and a lot of the HTC phones we have come in are ridden with uneven gaps, light leakage where the glass isn't bonded to the chassis evenly etc.

The image processing on the HTC phones makes me physically sick as a pro-photographer, it uses a gaussian blur on say for example a photo someone's shirt, and then sharpens the edges up artificially. I find the iPhone 4 camera to be quite good - okay, not like my D7000 but ok for quick snaps here and there.

I always have found Android to be like a free-shareware project rather than a polished product like iOS.

Just my 2p!
