Revs rise, drop, then rise again

Featured Replies

I noticed the other day (the road was wet) when I floored it in 4th the revs shot up from just over 2k up to over 3k, dropped, then shot up again. If I wasnt looking at the rev counter I wouldnt have known as it all felt fine. I put it down to wheelspin, but I couldnt feel anything so it seemed a bit wierd.

Anyway, tonight I was on a totally dry road and same circumstances and the same thing happened. When the revs rose to start there was no sudden acceleration, everything felt very smooth.

Is this normal?

sounds like clutch beginning to slip.

Yup that's a slipping clutch.

Flooring it in 4th at 2k is not good for the life of the clutch or DMF.

Ah ok never thought about the clutch slipping, tbh it was more like 2.5k revs, then once at 3k they rose a little then dropped back down to 3k. Same thing happened tonight on the was home from work.

Bummer. To save me doing various searches, whats the approx cost of a standard clutch compared to an uprated one, roughly?

£150 standard, £650 sachs. £1000 smf & clutch

Oh well £150 doesnt sound too bad, but looks like I need to take more car with a standard clutch! I thought it was ok to put my foot down after 2.2k revs but I'm obviously mistaken,

Feed the power... Full revs around 2500rpm

Standard clutch is poop

Yup, smoothness is the key.

I can get mine to slip at 3k if I'm just pootling about then mash my foot to the floor suddenly.

So considering I've never felt it slip before, it could be that my clutch will still be ok if I learn the art of smoothness?

Yes it may suffice a bit longer if you calm down

Or if your like me it will be gone in a week :)

£150 for a standard clutch

That is funny!!!!!!

It is a 6 hour job ish to do

IUf you have clutch slip , the chances are the DMF has gone , and they are approx £500

Dont forget to change the release bearing too , quite a few more notes

IIRC when I was quoting for the single mass kits , it was approx £1200

Watch the clutch , the 6 speeds do not kike to be messed with

My 5 speed Fabia had done 204k miles , mapped had done 120k miles , and no slip at all

Be carefull with the 6 speed clutches

They will bite you back

All depends who you know...

I got a helix and smf whacked in for the grand sum of £80!

Plus i get 10% discount from mardigras as im a good customer, so my total including fitting was £860

Lol

He wanted a price for comparison not a "fully fitted" price. I dont know if he was fitting it himself, or has a mate to do it or what, so i just gave the parts price to compare. I just double checked the price, £155 for a Sachs standard clutch so why is £5 so funny?

6 Hours?! I`v sat and watched Ali do it in much less than that :giggle:

DMF? Until its taken off & inspected then you`ll not no. My mate`s fabia had a clutch fitted after his was slipping, was checked & nothing wrong with it, again @ Unit 18. Why would you replace a part until you know it needs it. :wonder:

£1200 sounds a bit over-inflated if I`m honest, as jase has said, £900ish one can be had for from mardi gras motor sport.

The book is not far off 6

That would also include the release bearing and the flywheel

BNow if the release bearing and flywheel was not replaced , and then an issue arises as it has not been done , then maybe a few words would have been said

But , I know that is what we would have quoted for the full kit

Now , I dont know many people that would say that they have a mate who can do that job

My fella would not do that type of job , even though he is qualified , mainly as he does not have access to a ramp

But if I was to be quoted that price for a clutch , then I would think , happy days

But then you get a kick in the gonads with the proper quote

Sarah

I`m not a garage, nor do i work for one, i`m just trying to give some advice on a friendly forum. Labour rates can vary massively depending on where you go and who you know, so its totally pointless me trying to "quote" a price for fitting included.

With regards to the flywheel being replaced, i`d like to think Ali is in a position to advise on the condition of a part TBH. As it stands my friend has a new clutch which was needed due to slipping, and a perfectly fine working fabia again. Where as if he had have gone else where using your theory, he would have the same, just massively out of pocket and a nice used but perfectly working flywheel as a door stop. :dull:

To be fair , I have worked for quite a few garages , some dealers (Skoda) one VAG specialist

Yes , you can be in luck with the DMF , but when it comes to a wearable part like the clutch and DMF , mainly myself , as I know how weak they are , I would probably have the DMF replaced at the same time

But then , as they are so expensive , it may be worth not replacing them IF you are one of the lucky ones

It is more of 90 percent + to be worn

Anyone who replaces clutches would have a DMF there to replace while doing the job

Yes , he would have been in the best position to check the DMF , and everyone would check , but if I was quoting for anyone at the last 2 VAG specialists , I would have sold them an uprated clutch and uprated DMF

I dont think I have sold an OEM clutch kit since being back at the dealers , anf this is because in the long run , it is cheaper

But I will say to anyone that is requiring a clutch , budget for the DMF too

Anyone who has a 5 speed , then they are more fortunate , as the VR6 single mass kit is ALOT cheaper to buy and quicker to fit too

Sarah

The first one seems to be a good price

With the single mass flywheel too , as the dual mass is so weak

I must admit , I have seen kevlar clutches before , and they was not that good

But hey.....maybe worth checking out what warranty you get with it too

Just my opinion

Ok Sarah, thanks for your input. Something to consider for sure.

I'm going to see how the clutch fairs over the next few weeks and delay getting a new one for as long as possible.
