Yeti Roof Rack

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me if the official Yeti roof rack (feet & bars) is exactly the same as the Thule after market kit (775/869) ?

Has anyone bought a kit from their Skoda dealer and tell me how much they cost ? I have been given a quote for bars and 4x bike carriers from a local car accessory shop and want to see which is the best fit/cost combination.

Thanks.

After much research I've gone for

Thule 775 Foot Pack and the Thule 869 Aerobar

Then a 360 litre Karrite box and a couple of bike carriers.

Bought the bike carriers last year and only just (today) got round to using them.. worked a treat :-)

oh got them freom skidrive.co.uk

Contact 900k as he has gone down the Skoda route.

I personally will either use the internal bike carrier for 1 or 2 bikes, or get a towball mounted carrier as I have a detachable towbar for more.

I really don't want any more drag to reduce the fuel consumption.....

There are some useful previous posts including

'Perfect roofbox for Yeti?' My link

which has photos of both Thule and Skoda bars, and

'roof bars height' My link

which shows Prorack bars which look neat.

I'd prefer not to put bikes up the roof, but need to use the rear seats and boot and I couldn't justify the expense of a towball mounted rack. In February I paid £120 for ex-display Skoda roof bars from my local dealer; new ones would have been £160. I already had cycle carriers: my Halfords one only just fitted and my old Automaxi one will need some holes drilled first. I'm nearly 6 foot but I find putting a bike up the Yeti roof to be quite a bit harder compared to my previous Octavia.

I fitted the Skoda bars as they come with a particular fitting medium on the roof rails which i like better than the usual clamp arrangement and are rated at 100kg. I have a Hapro ski box or the roof and the combination feels rock solid, even at speeds of 70mph plus.

The Thule ones have a clamp system that go over the Yeti's bars and then the roofbars stick out past the car's bars on each side. The official Å koda ones do not do that and sit very neatly on top of the Yeti's bars. Your roof bars themselves are slightly narrower as a result but you rarely attach things all the way to the edge anyway - unless you plan to attach a narrow box or two narrow boxes or a narrow box and a bike. So I went for the cleaner look of the official ones since I have a very wide roofbox and thus can't ever fit it with the bikes.

Not seen those Prorack ones before. They give you an even narrower bar and they look neat but I don't think a system that clamps like that from one side can take very heavy loads? Not that you are allowed more than 100kg anyway, but still I prefer a better connection like the Å koda system gives (or the total Thule clamp).

Do the Skoda ones attach to the screw mountings?

Yep they do. One position at the front and the choice of two at the back (hence six bolts there).

Cheers mate.

I have the Thule bars but have sawn them to length. I needed some to carry a large pop up gazebo. Skoda could order me some, Halfords had some and I saved £60 or so.

The amount they stick out is untidy but might be useful for bungee attachment for larger less tidy loads.

I use the Thule system with aerobars, I find the overhang useful for mounting ie looping the strap / rope etc round, works well for me and as with other systems this feels rock solid at 70mph+

Also find them easy to mount and dismount!

Hope this helps

Salut

Hi, can you provide me the part numbers for the Skoda racks. Am not sure if the local Skoda unit in India has these. If not, will ask them to order it for me. Thanks for the neat pics.

Johann I too have bought the Skoda genuine roof bars BUT, looking at your picture you have black pins that screw into your roof rails, the ones I got were just the bare metal and have subsequently rusted! Are your pins the ones that came in the pack?

As for ease of fitting and quality, I really can't fault the Skoda roof bars, I had Thule in the past and they always whistled rather annoyingly.

The 'pins' are available in either silver or black, to match the colour of your roof rails (the fore and aft ones that you then mount the bars to). I've got the silver ones too - no hint of rust.

I will have to take a trip back to Skoda then as I have rusty pins!! Take a look.

Yes take them back! They MUST order them with your chassis number. That is the only way they should have done it in the first place. So get them to correctly order you ten black ones.

Raspberry60 - Has anyone tried the Cruz roof bars for a Yeti? They come with in 1300mm and they even throw in locks for free. Currently they are about 40% of Thule and 30% of the Skoda originals. Having found a late model DSG I am spent up!

Prorack bars are rated to 70kilos, they sit on top and clamp from below. Works very well if you can live with slightly narrower bars IMO. :)

Hi VBN,

The Partcode for this (only Transverse Roof Bars) in India is LAS630001. I ordered mine with the Skoda workshop in Gurgaon in Feb mid and finally took the delivery a few days back. It took almost 35 days as the kit had to be back-ordered with the Czech factory. Cost in India was 10,044 Rs.

Will post some pics on my TBHP thread (Behemoth).

I'm considering Thule 775 footpack to fit my aero bars to my new L&K but have a question regarding spacing. I note the official Skoda bars attach at the points where there are placements inside the roofrails, well short of the joints in the rails.

I intend to carry my sea kayak using a Kari-Tek Easy Loader http://www.karitek.c...category_id=149 and the wider the spacing between attachment points, the better.(It helps with the security of attachment to the kayak carrier as a 17' sea kayak is not the most aerodynamic load in a side wind!).

I was considering attaching the crossbar feet across the joints in the roofrails and the aerobars would extend out sideways, as do the bars on the kari-Tek device; this aids loading and avoids clouting the mirrors.

Any thoughts on the pros and cons of such a postion for the footpack?

Silverhead

I have a set of Thule bars with the 775 footpack. I have used them to carry MDF sheets and other quite heavy items. I have had no problems

fitting the footpacks with fore and aft spacing to suit whatever I was carrying at the time, including having one footpack on the joint itself.

Thanks Loftypeak2,

To me, attaching across the joint would seem the strongest placement. However there must be a reason for the 'preferred' locations to be closer together. I can only surmise it might be related to wind noise.

Thanks again.

Silverhead
