petrol vRS MPG

Featured Replies

That's almost exactly my experience when I tried 70 on the cruise first thing after the infamous lol claimed 50mpg under similar conditions. He later backtracked a bit IIRC.

Best I got out of our TSI VRS is 48 mpg on the computer and a range of 570 miles shown on the computer. Had 53 mpg on the 1.8 TSI DSG and 650 miles on the computer range. Both the TSI VRS and 1.8 TSI DSG over-read on the speedometer, odometer and computer by about 5% I reckon when referenced against GPS and routeplanner mileage.

Got no compliants on the mileage or the performance of the TSIs. Massive torque and power spread ie 1500 rpm to 6500 rpm is a bonus with both EA888 engine variants.

Wish it had a bigger tank like my A4 use to have and wish we could get the 2 litre petrol engine from the A4 with the 210 hp and more importantly 350 Nm of torque, wow.

I too have the TSI engine, and what a fine engine it is

Basically round town I get 30mpg, on longer runs up to 40ish, and everything in between.

As we all have the same engine, surely it follows that it will perform the same (unless its faulty). Any deviations are down to how hard you press the fast pedal, and where you drive. :dull:

Yes, but I think what this thread has shown is that 'real life' mpg actually matches the claimed official figures - look at a lot of consumer/watch dog type sites on this area and it seems that with a number of other manufacturers this isn't always the case and people often seem to get worse mpg's then the claimed figures.

Does wheel size have an effect on MPG?

Does wheel size have an effect on MPG?

Tyre width does influence mpg as does rolling resistance of tyre type and inflation pressure. Wheel size in isolation shouldn't have any effect.

Best I got out of our TSI VRS is 48 mpg on the computer and a range of 570 miles shown on the computer.

But you said previously:

On long runs the TSI VRS is capable of 50 mpg (on the computer) at reasonable speeds criusing at 70 mph and having an average journey speed of 65 mph

I would say 48mpg at an average speed of say 55 is fairly plausible.

I remain sceptical that 50mpg or even near it at average 65 is possible unless there's predominantly downhill involved.

Does wheel size have an effect on MPG?

Tyre width does as the "hysteresis energy losses in tyres are greater for tyre widths ie wider tyres absorb more energy to change from round to indented when they rotate to touch the ground.

Bigger wheels and tyres weight more 225s compared to 205s could weight 4 kgs more each ie 16 kgs for all 4 wheels, 20 kgs if you include the spare if full sized.

If the main thing is to get tyre tempature right then bigger tyres can work worse if they do not get to right temperature and can be worse in wet and slush if they float on the water etc and aquaplane.

I am a Michelin fan, even Audi use Michelin at Le Mans and not Conti, though Conti are good. Advanced manufacturere like Michelin use advanced materials like Kevlar which tend to have lower energy consumption and therefore lower energy consumption.

Never good to over-tyre a car, or especially a motorcycle, as you end up with worse performance not better!

Yeah same here 29mpg

Yeah same here 29mpg

Computer showing 30 mpg on the TSI VRS so probably actually doing 28-29 mpg, mainly round town driving though. 1.8 TSI has not been much better than that driving round London and Worcs probably around 35 mpg, mind you our diesel Octavia is only showing 46 mpg ie probably about 45 mpg.

Roll on stop start and regenorative brakes etc and some nice longer A road and motorway journeys to up the average which is key when you are claiming mileage rate!

Since being at stage 1 mine has got worse around town but not sure about long journeys yet. Mid twenties for me normally

40.8mpg over 58 miles today on stage 3 B)

What kind of driving/average speed out of interest?

Miss Daisy in sunday traffic on B roads, maybe 35mph average speed :p .
