Stoopid f? insurance

Featured Replies

Righty ho,

I've got the Fun insured, however they've listed the Truckman, rain-cover, towbar and locking nuts all as modifications. If I have any of those on, it will invalidate the insurance (Locking nuts! surely that's preventative?)

Have gone through all the site sponsors here - no joy, even those who profess to do 'modifieds' won't do the Fun as it's classed as a commercial vehicle. (One wonders how many commercial vehicle have towbars.......)

At this rate, I'm going to have to consider changing the Fun for something else, which I'd rather not do.

I don't want to change the Fun as it is, indeed, bloody good fun to drive and the looks from people are always worth sitting behind the Skoda badge for.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to who I can call so I can get the relevant insurance?

Cheers

Alex

That really does suck to be honest. Direct Line do CDV's now, or give Budget a bell.

CDV's? (I know I'll regret asking that, ;) )

Cheers I get hold of both of them. :)

Car derived vans :giggle: . I had fun years ago insuring a Cube van. was with Direct Line then for car ins, but at that time they didn't touch vans. I ended up going with Budget, who at the time had a branch locally!

Cheers (I knew it would be an easy one)

It's not so much getting the insurance itself, it's this modifications stuff. I mean surely locking nuts are a preventative security measure. I'll bet if I phone up and say my alloys have been nicked, the first thing they'll ask is why I didn't have locking nuts on there! All the bits aren't enhancing the performance or value in any way, that's the stupid thing.

Right, where did I put my beer.........

I've insured through Adrian Flux, who are sponsors and will give you 10% discount if you mention the forum. Mine is a cube van, with no cube! aftermarket alloys and lowered suspension. Locking wheelnuts loading the premium is just daft, they sound like right numptys. Try Adrian Flux.

iam with adrian flux aswell, standard pick-up and i think about £235 with no points and no ncb...iam 48

I tried Adrian Flux, even with the mythical 10% Briskoda discount (and this is before I'd mentioned anything like nuts, towbars Truckmans etc) their quote was higher than my original £610 renewal with Aviva!

I don't in Beruit, or Chatham either.

I got mine for £290 odd, they defo took off 10% cos it was 320 odd beforehand, that included declaring mods: alloys, lowered etc (no locking wheelnuts!). Prob best to ask for discount after a quote is arranged? I did ask the insurer regarding the taking off of the grp top, they told me that it wasnt a performance mod so didn't affect the insurance.

I'm 35 9 yrs ncb a teacher. Quite low risk I guess. I know age makes a huge difference, the technician at my school was quoted 300 a month for his knackered golf with his 19 yr old son on the policy! When he said his insurance had gone up from 120 to 300, I thought he meant per year not per month!

:) Have you tried Footman James? I've been very impressed with them.

Yeah I'd have thought that too. I've got 9 years NCD, 20 years on my licence and 40 years on the old life clock.

Dave: Cheers, I'll look them up and give them a tug see what they say :)

IMO locking nuts and rain covers are not modifications. A rain cover is removable (and is therefore an accessory), and locking nuts perform the same function as wheel nuts. I'll bet if you said you had a magic tree hanging from your rear view mirror they'd have charged extra for that too.

This sounds like when people were being charged more for winter tyres. Probably best not to mention anything other than the truckman top and towbar. Anything else and I think the insurers see ££ signs.

I had mine insured through Brentacre for a while.

Try Primo plc. They are sympathetic to sensible mods e.g. winter tyres on different wheels, and added my Fun to the policy for £10 (10 months remaining).

and this is before I'd mentioned anything like nuts, towbars Truckmans etc

Why mention any of those three? They are/could have been all factory fitted options? The insurrance only needs to know about modifications like new alloys with wider tyres, lowered suspension, mapped etc etc.

i don't think the truckman needs mentioning either....

the scaremongers here will say you have to advise them even of factory fitted options, IMO as a underwriter(1yr) and a insurance broker(4yrs)

don't be too PC about it, you haven't modified your vehicle to enchance desirability, performance or value so don't declare any of them and should the HIGHLY unlikely happen and you put in a claim for your own car(which would never be worth it due to value of the car) and they TRY to reject the claim then in this example you would have a very good case in court to claim that you weren't aware these are modifications as you bought the car like that and assumed thats how it came.

The issue came as the company had specifically mentioned locking nuts as a modification. Apparently because it you fitted locking nuts it *must* be because you'd changed to alloys. The concept that it came with alloys as standard, without locking nuts, seemed to be a foreign concept to them.

It's all academic now as the truck is sitting on the drive, SORN'd, behind the Octavia Elegance that's now the daily runner. (More MPG, more toys, more comfort). It'll be spring before I start looking for a new home for it, as it is very much more a 'summer time' vehicle, even with the Truckman on it.

adrian flux are only cheaper if you HAVE modified the car!!!!

with Flux it would cost £640 to insure my felly as STANDARD. but spec ALL the mods and it came down to £220!!!!!!!

Hi All.

I am looking at buying a felly Pick Up to replace my recently dead Felly hatch :'( , BUT... insurance is doing my head in - does anyone do pick up insurance where you can have the drive any other car clause (the one where if you borrow your mates car it is covered 3rd party) as all I've tried dont... and if I dont find one it may stop me from having my dream pick up.

thanks in advance for any advice you give.

BTW re mods vs rates I put pick ups details in the merkat site and "non standard paint" (matt black) added £100+ and most declined to quote ?!

Edited by Biggles!

@RainbowFore - is that the album cover Earth Moving by Mike Oldfield as your pic?

@Biggles! you need commercial vehicle or van insurance, as that's what it is classed as. One company to try is evaninsurance. No idea if they provide the drive other cars cover though, I know the company does on their car arm of the business even on just tpft.

I've just insured my FUN and Direct Line came out much much cheaper than any other quote I had (and that is on a renewal too which is usually more)

I changed the details from my L&K felly to the fun over the phone and it just went up from £189 to £222 (a year)thats fully comp etc.

BUT because of my job they won't give me cover to drive any other vehicles (I'm a mechanic) they happliy cover the missus to drive any other vehicles tho so maybe worth a go?

Oh I didn't mention the truckman top as its a factory option anyway so not a modification

Hi Alex, Have insured my fun through AutoDirect since around 2008. From what I've read by comparison they're probably pretty competitive and 'mods' have never been an issue (locking wheel nuts I ask you!!!). Last year I tried some of the comparison sites and ended up with a daft range of prices, extending up to around £1200 pa!

Suggested same to Tom last year but not sure if he followed it up?

No, it was the single cover ;) Good spot though. :)

Oh I gave up in the end, bought a diesel Octy, less insurance, less tax, more mpg and way more comfort.

Either I'll get rid of the truck (preferred option) or think about a limited milage policy and use it in the summer months. (Although that's a cost-option, really wanting to save money, not spend it).

Yeh, see where u'r coming from. I still think the pick ups etc are over priced insurance wise for what they are. Wife pays far less for her Fabia. Hope you can hold on to the fun.

Ask to have the locking wheel nuts etc put to the underwriters as any underwriter with half a brain will lok at most of those and say they stop the wheels getting nicked. Truckman will stop the things being nicked form the boot etc
