Remapping a vRS

Featured Replies

Does anyone know what boost the standard supercharger pulley achieves?

From what I've seen the tuning maps only seem to improve the curves from the point where the turbo kicks in...I think if the VRS needs anything, it's low down torque..'tends to feel a little gutless below 3.500rpm in my opinion. If anybody knows of a remap that raises the supercharger boost/torque I'd be interested?

What about my mid range gain below 3500rpm

Believe me this goes like a stabbed rat from tick over now. Also don't just look at the power gains, but also torque. Nearly 60lbft and 60hp at 3500rpm

Go faster - need to stop better - upgrade brakes.

Go faster and stop faster - upgrade suspension

Go faster, stop faster and handles better - engine needs bracing

Go faster, stop faster, handles better, engine braced - person inside needs fastening in - bucket seats.

All the above - drivetrain needs upgrading - SSP clutchpacks.

All the above - car is overheating - upgrade intercooler.

I like that set of rules. I'd add stripping everything out unnecessary weight-wise for handling performance. And I always read the best single thing you can spend money on to enhance performance is driver training.

I like reading mapping threads cos it reassures me that I've bought the right car if real enthusiasts like sy are into it. On a PCP deal I wouldn't do it myself. Oh yeah, and I've been banned by the wife after stage 2 mapping my Megane and then wrapping it round a tree.

My thoughts on the whole 'gutless' argument is... on track I totally agree, but on public roads the vRS is absolutely more than enough. Unless someone can tell me of a road in the UK where 140mph is acceptable. Sy is a trackday addict so a vRS would seem pretty gutless as standard.

On a related note - the vRS compared to the Focus RS, what are the modders getting out of the Focus?

I love the phrase "goes like a stabbed rat" *sharkrider goes off to find some rats to stab.....

I think the biggest failing with the car is the steering feel...it needs the assistance backing off IMHO, but I guess everything is going to feel a little numb after my VX.

Even if you did, you still won't get any steering feel, it's electrically assisted not hydraulic. 90% of road cars have no proper steering feel anyway because of PAS. You can only have weight and self-centering to give you "feel"

"Goes like a stabbed rat" quality phrase, must remember to use that one !

Heavily nodded focus rs will be at just shy of 400hp, wouldn't be worth entertaining it then lol. 0-60 sub but not that much faster as they have traction issues, once rolling though, bloody quick beyond belief

Love my analogies. Try to hepget a couple in general conversation everyday. Best phrase is from dodge ball. 'Your about as useful as a cQck flavoured lolypop' lol

Its been designed to fit into the companies overall sales/marketing strategy and to make maximum profit, not to be the fastest it can be. Wouldn't make sense for VAGs cheapest performance car to be signifacntly faster out of the box than say a Golf GTI would it?!

Remapping unleashes some more of the engines true potential as opposed to whats set-up as standard by the manafacturer.

I disagree that the vRS 'blows most performance cars off the road'... at least mine doesn't! :giggle:

Personally I won't be going for a remap just yet, in another 12months tho 210Bhp 'ere I come.... B)

218bhp?Bloody hell ,you'll take off ,never mind accelerate!

Lol, no it doesn't.

A focus rs will cost upwards of £27000. My fabia can keep up with them no worries, yet cost £13900. Mode so far £140 (got remap for free so could add £400 to that) if I spend another £1500 on the chassis ill match it on track as well. That's why I modify.

Another example Leon cupra 240hp is around 2 grand dearer than the Leon Fr 200hp. But for £400 you can make your car perform identical, if not better

Ok, sounds like you got it sorted ,but I'm more than happy with the standard performance. All you need for normal roads anyway.

Given this some more thought since my original post; totally with those people who want to tune the vRS. I guess if your that way inclined, not too fussed about the warranty and have money to spend then I am sure a bit more power and some subtle brake and suspension mods will improve the car beyond its standard offering. Si's motor is no doubt very impressive and would love to have a go in a chipped one just to see what its like but I dont have any real impulse to do anything to ours.

I guess ultimately I'm not that into modding cars; probably because I dont like to keep cars very long and when selling them on modded cars are in fairness an acquired taste, something that the majority of the public and particularly main dealers arent all that interested in. I think its fair that if you go and spend thousands making the car "better", you'll never get anything back on it come the time you sell it on, you may even lose money.....though selling privately to another modder might work out well but again its waiting for or finding the right person to buy it at the right money. For people like me I think keeping a car unmolested (if thats not too vulgar a term!) is probably best. Also that its the wifes car first and foremost, she doesnt need it any quicker let me assure you!

As it stands I think the vRS in its standard form is every bit as quick as a MK5 Golf GTi, probably very little in it with the MK6 as thats just got a bit heavier with no real power gain over the MK5. For £15k thats a real achievement. I still think the chassis whilst very good is a bit wayward; probably on account on being heavily based on the previous gen Polo, not exactly renound for its handling prowess. It's good in the dry, but driven hard I'm always aware how hard the electronics are working to stop the power being spun out of the tyres, the ESP cuts in alot and its obvious quite alot of the time that its reigning in the power to stop any lairly wheel spinning/torque steer. In the wet its really rather exagerated. I took my brother in law out in the car last night in the rain, whilst carrying out a (safe I may add) overtaking manouver whilst it was brutally effective even the brother in law commented "it's trying to wheel spin isnt it?!"...I couldnt deny it as the ESP light was blinking and there was some hesitation whilst the electronics made good of the situation. XDS as clever as it is certainly is no substitute for a proper mechanical diff, though at this money i'd never expect a car of this calibre to have one. I havent driven a Polo GTi but i'd be interested to see how it compares with the vRS, particularly in the wet. I would imagine its more modern chassis and wider tyres offer some improvement.

To sum up it's a whole lot of car for the money; in my opinion way quick enough but to a degree over exploits the chassis in standard form particularly in the wet but regardless of its flaws I still love it. As i'd never go to the extent of changing mechanical components on the car I think a remap alone would be a step too far for the vRS. I think if you're on a quest to extract more power out of the car you need to go the whole hog and address the other mechanical weaknesses too like Si is doing with his.

Think that sums it up. When I sold my octavia thou k stripped everything back to stock and sold up. Most people tend to so this as you get more money for the car and you sell on the mode as well, I clawed back about half the cost of the mode on the ictavia so it wssnt to bad

From what I have read, the standard vRS is at the limits of maximum torque for the DSG box. Remaping the engine which can produce a lot more torque and I'm sure will have negative effects on the box. I believe you can buy maps for the gearbox, this not only makes it change faster, but creates more oil pressure in the box which allows it to cope with more torque.

As for upgrading brakes, remember "Speed is desirable stopping is essential" .

The box has in built safety systems that can limit torque. Mine has never been activated and im stage 2. I believe what you read was the vw literature where it states that they fit the dsg7 to cars with 250nm or less and fit the dsg6 to cars with 250nm or more. That's not stating the limits.

Also do you really think vag, who are renowned for over engineering would fit a gearbox that was at its limits. It wouldn't be good for image if they did especially if they started failing.

Your dsg is coping fine so no problems there

I agree with Sy,

VAG have always over-engineered their products. The 6 speed DSG fitted to my Edition 30 was rated at 350nm didn't start to slip until I was putting 693nm through it :D
