Yeah cheers mate, Bolero is working a treat!

I don't seem to have the Screen Dimming issues that you had as well - I assume this is to do with my car appearing to have a light sensor on the rear view mirror...

currently in the process of acquiring the light switch to get that fully Auto light'd up!

  • Author

Think there's more to it than that, as I've seen this on both mine and Andy's cars - both of which have the auto-dim interior mirror and light/rain sensor as standard.

Can you post up the 56- Radio section from a VCDS on yours, since you've had the Bolero in? Just so I can try and spot anything different.

But at the moment, it seems completely hit and miss on which Boleros have the dimming issue :S

EDIT :-

Here's mine. The number next to 'BOLERO' looks higher on yours, which could be a sign. That's the only thing I can see, as the Revision is the same. And that's the one I was thinking might be different!

It's the component info I'm now most interested in, as your numbers are far higher than either of ours!

The coding isn't directly relevant, as that concerned with telling the Bolero what options you have, such as parking sensors and full climate. I certainly recall the earliest byte options being related to these sorts of functions, which is why the start of your coding differs.

Andyvee gave me some tips (thanks), and I have just modified my long code to 020004000001 (as g_tee and Wardy).

This got rid of the error codes (and fixed an over bright sound), but doesn't appear have resolved my dim display issue.

Interestingly, my component code is identical to Wardy. More to confirm that the Bolero component has a play in this issue.

Good to see it has solved one issue - I think the dim display is just something you have to live with on certain Bolero revisions and older (pre 2007MY) cars.

  • Author

Thread revival!!

Dim display can't be solved, least not in the attempts I've tried so far.

As Andy says, the closest reason we can get to is some issue with the later Boleros and earlier cars.

It's believed that the manufacturer of the original first Bolero units and the later ones changed. This would fit with me, as the Bolero I fitted to my previous Octy when the Bolero was first released didn't have this dim screen issue. Wish I'd kept that one now!

Does anyone have a dim display from a factory-fitted Bolero, or is it just some of the retro-fitted ones?

  • Author

Only to retrofits, as far as I'm aware.

I don't have a dim display, I can see it just fine!

  • Author

Can you post up revision info for the Bolero, from a VCDS scan?

  • Author

Personally, a slightly dim screen in daylight is a small price to pay for the upgrade in functionality and appearance from the Stream :)

Sounds better too.

For me it's perfectly usable and with retrofitting you do take a risk with some unknown or unintentional 'features'! It's just not as bright as it should be, or as you would expect during the day.

No seriously, I can see it any time of day without any problem! Best mod I've made to the car so far.

I will do a scan and get the details.

The plot thickens, as I've just looked up an old scan for my previous Octy and the Bolero info is exactly the same!

Still, I'm still sure the actual units differed and that the manufacturers changed, as mentioned earlier.

The earlier unit I also had successfully running on a RevF CAN gateway, whereas this time round I had drain using a later RevK gateway. Never simple is it? :) But further proof, I think, that there are subtle differences in Bolero units depending on age.

I don't doubt it and I agree it's a great upgrade :) - just wondering if you have one of the earlier units.

But as you'll now see, I don't think VCDS info will necessarily tell us anything! You haven't got any pics of the unit before you fitted it have you? I'm pretty certain there'll be a difference in stickers and info on the unit itself...

The Bolero has option to have the display more or less brightened, it´s under setup-display-lighting

  • Author

While that's of course true, that's not the issue being discussed.

If the solution were that easy, we'd have solved it by now I reckon :)

IIRC, I have a Delphi unit

While that's of course true, that's not the issue being discussed.

Ok :hi:

Mine was a Delphi from a 2011 car and had the dim display issue in a 2006MY car.

Worked fine in a later car though, so the unit wasn't faulty.

Early Bolero's have a light sensor on the front and control the screen brightness from that (as per Columbus). Later ones don't have the sensor and are looking for something on the CANBUS to tell them how bright to be (that isn't there on early cars).

Apologies if I got over excited last night, I'd had a few tins of loopy juice :D
