Lots of smoke from re-map

Featured Replies

I have had a custom re-map now for approx 10k. It made the figures in my sig 2 months ago. It had an oil and filter change in April and full service and belt change 7.5k miles before that in October.

The car never smoked much until recetly. It (black smoke) seems to happen at under 2.5k rpm on part or full throttle and sometimes immediatley after coming off the throttle. Its getting worse, to the point of completely obscuring the rear visibilty momentaily. Power seems down. I always use Shell V Power D.

The car is booked in with Black Code for a courtesy inspection next week. Any thoughts/ heads up on what this could be?

I'm hoping its a boost leak.

Thanks

joe

Definitely sounds like a boost leak somewhere.

Put it in 2nd, about 20mph, open all your windows and put your foot down. If you hear a loud hissing noise then it's leaking somewhere.

Take the engine cover off and it will be immediately obvious if it's one of the top joints. Anywhere down near the IC is much more difficult to get to and usually involves some sort of dismantling of the front of the car to get enough access to put the pipes back together.

Does sound like a boost leak.

Stage 2 remap tho? @ 167bhp??

For what it's worth get a smoke test done for boost leaks as closer to the turbo are hard to see without pulling car apart. Ideally you shouldn't be using full throttle under 2.5k to protect your clutch especially with a remap but when you do diesels tend to smoke abit before coming onto boost then the smoke will clear. Despite that it does sound like you have alot of smoke, does the smoke clear any after 2.5k? And try bp ultimate as it's better, I experienced more smoke with v power and throw in a little millers too. I have next to nothing smoke wise with a map too,

Hope this helps

I hope you done the obvious and cleaned/changed the air filter.

The stage one was just a economy re-map. Technically the stage 2 is just performance re-map.

yeah smoke not noticeable after 2.5k rpm. I've got a full tank of V derv, I'll stick a millers in with it.

Cheers

Air filter has done 10k now, recently taken out and changed.

Get a new filter thrown in, to me there doesn't seem to be anything wrong if the smoke clears as it's normal for them to puff a wee bit before coming onto boost, possibly overfuelling on the map

I have an update for this...

The car was still running badly (as above) until last week. The MOT was due last Friday so I decided to unblock the EGR vacuum pipe. The car seemed to run better. On Sunday I blocked the EGR off again and went to pick up a friend. The car produced loads and loads of smoke, performance was down abd the car seemed to be struggling. I was really worried. I then unblocked the vacuum pipe and drove to Bournmouth and back (holiday) without so much as a puff of smoke.

So, it seems like blocking up the EGR is causing these problems? With my current set up (9mm EGR reducer as per here)

Has anyone else ever experianced this? Ideally I would like to completely block the EGR because I don't like the idea of exhaust gasses going through the I/C and turbo etc...

Are you serious? Do you even know how the EGR system works?

Egr would contribute to a small amount of smoke because of the increased air temps and higher egts but I imagine this would be minimal?

Blocking or deleting the EGR is a popular mod on here. I'd rather not have gasses recycled through the engine and possibly causing tar build ups if possible.

Boooooost leak!

I have one of the smokiest map on brisky and I hardly ever see anything before 2.5 bar.
