OSX Lion (10.7)

Featured Replies

Installed the Developer GM on my Macbook Pro 13" at the weekend as an upgrade from Snow Leopard. My Macbook has been upgraded to 8GB ram and 500GB HDD.

Some things I really like, some things seem pointless but everything works really well. Battery life seems to be slightly less, but all in all everything seems fine.

If you decide to go this route, then something to keep in mind is that Lion will only run native intel compiled apps. Stuff that was written for the previous CPU will not run under Lion as the code has been removed from the OS. Lion is a true 64bit OS, and as such will not run on older intel processor Macs that do not have 64bit CPUs.

My iMac could do with a clear out so I might trash it and re-install snow leopard, restore aperture and iPhoto then bung Lion on top of that.

New MacBook Air's and MacPro's this week as well, big week for Apple. iMac number 2 has been working flawlessly now for the last 3-4 months since it last fancied a drive to the Apple store, so fingers crossed it stays that way with Lion ;)

What's it got over 10.6 then boys :p

A bigger pussy, and it can do full screen windows, and it will be magical, revolutionary etc etc

leopard sp2 :)

I've been running this since it was released after the WWDC. Very good imho but then i am a huge fan of my uncle Steve  . Mission Control & Launchpad are excellent features. It seems to run a bit quicker than SL 10.6.8 aswell. It will hopefully go on public release tomorrow.

Go get your turtle neck ;)

Assuming it's only a cheap upgrade it might be worth it I guess ;)

As for full screen windows :o :o :o say it isn't so :o

Me & Steve already have matching ones

It will cost £21 iirc but is only available via the Mac App Store.

Full screen windows is good

From running a couple of the developer previews main differences are:

Interface becoming more like iOS scroll bars work in opposite directions to previous version (although there is a pref to set this to the old method).

No physical software, everything will be through app store (certainly for Apple software).

iCloud integration, using this service to sync multiple devices and for back up.

Does not run on anything less than a core 2 duo (so 1st gen white iMac with core duo is out).

No more Rosetta so forget running legacy software (old versions of Office etc).

It seems to be a step change OS forcing upgrades in processors and software versions for those running older systems. It is also a step change in the user interface bringing it more in line with iOS as well as making you consider the use of Cloud services even if you think you don't need them.

Windows 3.1 had full screen windows, so I'm well aware of how annoying it is to not have them on 10.6.*

£21 is also not the end of the world, but it really does seem more of an SP to me than the new super OS they are hyping it to be.

apt-get distupgrade would probably work ;)

And the data centre is running Sun Solaris and IBM Linux servers, so what? Choose the best tool for the job. Every car in the World runs a Bosch patented ABS system, I don't care who's brands it as long as it works when I need it to.

Damn that means it will never work properly, will be constantly getting patched and will probably lose all my data. Looks like i wont be getting rid of the external HDD just yet :'( :giggle:

My MX-5 has no filthy bosch ABS system, it has "press to hard and you lock up so get used to pulsing like feck" braking system.

Macboys ...... pah!

Listen here iVRS Carl, you turtle neck wearing deviant, you keep up like this and your testicles will start withering and you will be known as iSheila ;)

Better than iSuckbillgates

I think you mean iBallmer although you have to be a little careful as if you cross an unexpected path, the will throw a ChairException which you have to catch.

Testing this on one of my environments at the moment.

Really annoying that they've changed the gestures for app switching etc. Yes, you can change them, but I can't change them back to how I liked them before!!

Unlike OSX that never needs patching or updating or bug fixes.

Hold on a min. Snow Leopard, Lion, whats the next one called Randy Tom? :p

OOOOK

How many times a day do Microsh!t release patches and security updates :p

The next one will be called Big Pussy

I would say Microsoft and Apple are on a par with their "updates". :)

Am not all that impressed with the OS.. yes it's fluffy and looks pretty.. but is it really a "NEW" Operating system?

To be honest, I've not seen anything NEW in there - it's all stuff that's either been done long before on a different OS, or it's just fluff tarted up to be something new.

I mean - Full screen window? as said before, Windows 3.1 did that.. Sure, Mac apps might not full screen, but 3rd party ones do (am thinking Safari vs Firefox here) - it just seems to me that Apple have finally caught up.

Multi-touch Gestures? so now I have to either buy a macbook with touchpad or upgrade the old mac mouse to a new one to use this?

Mission Control - Yep, if you are using your apps at full screen, then you need to be able to switch between them quickly. Didn't it already have this? Expose?

Launchpad - Isn't this just the Apps folder?

Resume - erm.. Suspend to disk on Windows?

AirDrop - send files wirelessly to people around you? What's stopping you emailing it, transferring it to USB or the cloud? Doesn't Bluetooth already allow you to share files? Not a massive leap forward - but only available to Mac users..

And on and on and on..

AutoSave and Versioning are the only features I think are any good.

It seems to me that a lot of their "new features" are aimed at the tablet market - e.g. pinch to zoom, multitouch gestures, etc.. maximised apps (on a small screen this is great, on a desktop / laptop monitor not so useful).

EDIT------

How can Apple claim "The worlds most advanced desktop operating system"? based on what?

How can Apple claim "The worlds most advanced desktop operating system"? based on what?

They asked a select bunch of Apple users.

Technically all the Mac OSX products are Updates..

10.0 Cheetah

10.1 Puma

10.2 Jaguar

10.3 Panther

10.4 Tiger

10.5 Leopard

10.6 Snow Leopard

10.7 Lion

so for the past 10 years (that's right Cheetah was released on March 24th 2001) Apple have only "updated" their software. emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif
