Audi's RS Blasts Back

he ultimate A4 is go, and Auto Express has the first official pictures. Set to debut at next week's Geneva Motor Show, the sensational new RS4 is packed with technology and promises unrivalled pace in a market that already hosts some of the world's fastest cars. Building on the success of the last- generation S4, the new RS recreates the legend of past models and is powered by a hi-tech evolution of Audi's 4.2-litre petrol V8. New pistons, cylinder heads and a special crank-shaft boost performance massively. Capable of revving to 8,250rpm, the unit also sports Audi's cutting-edge FSI fuel-injection system and produces an amazing 420bhp and 430Nm of torque - an output of over 100bhp per litre. To make the most of all that power, the Audi has a six-speed manual gearbox - no automatic version is available yet - and a new generation of the quattro four-wheel-drive system. For the first time, the 4WD offers variable torque distribution and a self-locking centre differential, which ensures that the power is fed to the wheels with the most grip at all times. The result is a 0-60mph time of only 4.8 seconds, and 0-124mph in 16.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, but derestricted it is reckoned that the newcomer could reach 180mph. Large ventilated and drilled brake discs help to haul the RS4 down from high speeds, with aerodynamic aids designed to cool the set-up during hard use. The super saloon also promises excellent handling. Aluminium suspension components help reduce unsprung weight for better control, while the ESP system is reprogrammed to respond more gently, allowing the driver more freedom. It also adjusts the brakes in wet weather, automatically applying them lightly to dry the discs, ensuring maximum stopping power. The RS4 has a wider track, too, and is lowered by 30mm for better grip and stability. The exterior has a number of subtle features which hint at the supercar performance without spoiling the clean A4 lines. A deep front grille with discreet RS4 badges adds menace, while increasing airflow to the thumping V8 engine. At the rear, two large exhaust pipes and a small boot spoiler are the only giveaways to the car's potential. Multi-spoke lightweight alloy wheels wear ultra low-profile tyres for ultimate grip. The A4 cabin gets a number of sporting additions. Light- weight leather seats have inflatable side bolsters for ultimate support. Chequered carbon fibre inserts, a dash-mounted starter button and a sport button for sharper throttle response add to the race car feel. After its Geneva debut, sales of the RS4 are set to start later this year.Matt Joy

Evolution of quattro system combined with Dynamic Ride Control used first by RS 6 quattro

An all-new V8-powered evolution of the widely acclaimed RS 4 quattro will dominate the Audi stand at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show (March 3-13), remarkable as much for its saloon body shell as for its awe-inspiring capabilities. The first ever B-segment Audi RS saloon epitomises Vorsprung durch Technik through numerous advances including an unprecedented combination of eight-cylinder power and FSI direct petrol injection and a new generation of quattro four-wheel-drive technology.

At the heart of the RS 4 quattro is a naturally aspirated 4.2-litre V8 FSI petrol engine that delivers 420PS, equating to a highly impressive specific output of just over 100PS per litre. Maximum torque of 430Nm occurs at 5,500rpm, and 90 per cent of this peak is available from 2,250rpm all the way to 7,600rpm, though the exceptionally free revving unit is actually capable of powering on well beyond this to 8,250rpm to provide breathtaking acceleration. The 0-62mph sprint is dispatched in just 4.8 seconds, 124mph from rest on a suitable Autobahn can be seen in only 16.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph* is easily achievable.

*= Plus the usual 15% allowance that Audi always use where possible so true top speed more like 175mph

Can you have it Jabba'd? Those rims look a bit small, Is it low enough?.....etc :D

Looks (a bit) like a Scooby from the front!

truley awesome indeed. I find it interesting that the WR quattro with a measley 220hp managed a 29 sec 0-200km/h then the later RS2 with 320 (i think) managed 23 sec 0-200 km/h then the crazy RS4 managed a 17 sec 0-200 km/h and the new one with 40bhp more manages a 16.9.

I think a combo of gravity and physics are drawing the line on really how fast things can move :)

Love the alloys, love the inside... love the car :D

Off out to buy lottery tickets....

Actually, you're all mistaken. That's a photoshopped pic of the new octy RS

Austin Allegro steering wheel ?!?!?

WOW i love that! Awesome motor. How much?

I reckon it's one of the type: if you have to ask you can't afford it ;)

Dash looks very busy though and the mobile is too far away imho. The rest of the beast looks awesome :D

We are told to expect in the region of 50K  although contrary to what the press says apparently UK specs are still to be confirmed.

Factory fit phone kits from Audi are voice activated - you dont need to touch it,mearly to push a button

If anyone orders one and doesn't like it I'll gladly take it off their hands.

We have taken 3 Deposits this week for the new RS4,plus we have 1 customer who has placed deposits on RS4,Q7 and LeMans

Stunning car but why oh why in the interior shot have they got a cruddy old Nokia phone in the phone holder ???? :D

Simple -- it's by far the most used phone by Audi customers world wide

although it looks old and dated - it's a very reliable phone with good sound and signal - important for purely business users

Well, I actually followed one briefly this morning.

The company next to us on the airbase stores new cars on the runway and in hangers etc. They also operate Audi UK's press fleet.

It looked very nice.

I would be quite happy with 'just' the S4. Is there really much difference performance wise?

Would save about

looks a bit icky...and fussy, I don't like the front and the sides seem too tall??

I want to see an avant version, always prefered it to the saloon.

saw an 05 a4 avant today. very nice and there is a very slight speed diference between the s4 and rs4 ;)

On checking some specs.S4 0-60 5 secs(5.6 0-62) as opposed to 4.8 0-60 for the RS.

Big difference comes next. 0-125 S4 20.6 RS 16.6

See what you mean :D
