Removable Towbar bumper cover

Featured Replies

I am just arranging to have a removable swanneck towbar fitted to my SM (thanks Millstone for the advice :thumbup:). The fitters have asked me to source the cover that fits over the hole they will cut in the bumper (ouch - I may have to look away at that point!). Can anyone on here;

a) give me the part number/s I need to order (is it just the cover or are there other associated bits?)

B) give me an idea of price?

c) anyone have a pic or explanation of how it fits on and what keeps it in place?

Cheers,

Tim

Ok, a bit more searching has given me a video showing how it works

and it looks like I just need the plastic cover. Part number anyone?

Thank you! :)

What is ETKA?

ETKA is the VAG parts catalogue - copies available via a certain auction site

So what is the bit that has to be glued into place, I thought it was the frame for the removable cover?

tom

The frame into which the cover clicks is glued (bonded) to to the inside of the bumper to surround the hole. If you use the double sided tape on the frame it will only last one or two uses.:0(

The cover will not work without it.

Ah - well he will need that!

5L6 607 518 Reinforcement - plus adhesive of course!

Don't forget there is also a kit that the dealers have to buy to make sure they cut the hole to the correct size and in the correct place... Though I imagine it is not too difficult to get that wrong!

If I remember correctly when mine was done there was a cut line for the full sized panel embossed on the inside of the bumper. - Though of course my hole was much smaller !! (sorry that sounds rude !!)

Instead of the slow setting Skoda glue use Super Glue (for plastic) carefully applied to the sticky tape, did this with a bumper protector and there is no way it will move !!

I hope this is all known by the dealers as My car gets it's towbar fitted this week, I sent them the facetube video of the Westfalia and specified this is the towbar I want.

I will let you know how it looks when I get the car next week

Towbar due to be fitted this afternoon. Got the bumper cover, frame and a bottle of glue from dealer but I now see that it is not glue but 'adhesion promoter' which I assume is to ensure that the tape already fitted to the frame sticks properly. Have I ordered the wrong thing? Does anyone know how it works?? It doesn't come with instructions just lots of hazard warnings!

Am I better off trying to glue the frame in and if so should I remove the tape first?

Do not remove the sticky tape!

The 'glue' is to make the tape stick stronger, but is supposed to be clamped up and allowed to cure for 24 hrs! You can achieve the same effect a lot faster if you put superglue onto the sticky surface of the tape and then hold it in place for a few mins.

It all went really well! Seeing your Yeti in so many bits is a bit worrying but it all went back together and you'd never know it had been apart. Took him 3 hours and he did a great job. Thanks for the recommendation, much appreciated. Only took him a few minutes to reprogram things with his magic box of tricks and then tested everything. Haven't tried the bike rack on it yet but will let you know when I have.

Cheers
