Oil change to 10/w40 on first service

Featured Replies

2010 Octavia VRs Petrol.

I’ve just had my first service at 10700 miles and the garage moved me to fixed servicing which I’m happy with but they have use 10/w40 semi-synthetic oil.

Is this oil correct as I can’t find any reference to it in the owner’s manual or other posts in the forum?

Maybe I'm being stupid here, but I don't see any mention of either a viscosity index or a VAG 500 series oil specification in the link?

And on the general point, as long as the oil meets the relevant VAG 500 series spec for the engine, the viscosity index doesn't matter.

this is the catalogue i use when supplying oil, as its a quantum (VAG group) website so all the oil is vag approved to the relevant spec, it states longlife oil to be used regardless of fixed or variable servicing and specs can be found here http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/quantum.php#

You need a 5w oil really to protect at cold starts also semi synth is no good. Take it back or phone Skoda UK about it.

Minimum i would use is a 5w-40 which i did as i feel 5w30 is a tad thin for me, anyway 10w40 semi is completely wrong.

Was this a dealer?

Was this a dealer?

Yes, Main Dealer. I wont name them yet until I'm convinced that they have made an error

I'd be really surprised if a 10/w40 is any good as I'm fairly certain both the new dervs and petrol engines need a low ash formula oil, which that isn't likely to be.

correct most manufacturers are fasing out 10w40 as its now pretty old hat, we sell more 5w40 fully, 5w30 longlife, 5w30 fully ford spec. anything with a DPF must also use VAG spec 5w30 as its low ash and doesnt ruin your filter

IIRC needs to be 502.00 for an FSI so ask to see te details for the oil from them. If they cant provide it ask them to chenge the oil to 502.00 spec oil.

my dealer did this to me as well , after talking to service manager he insisted this oil would be ok for fixed servicing, i wasnt convinced and had it changed (somewhere else}to quantum platinum which is 5w40 fully synthetic. im not slagging the garage off it has a very good reputation but i wasnt happy on semi synth!

I wasn't happy with the 10/w40 so the car went back in today and had the oil changed for some W 504 00. In future sevices I will insist on the correct oil, although you would think that you could trust dealers to use what is recommended.

I have also moved onto the fixed service schedule, I asked which oil it was now using so I could price up with other outlets as I wanted to carry some with me in case a top up was needed and was told it needed 5w-40 fully syn. I popped into my other local Skoda dealer to see if I could get it any cheaper and was told that all the oil was the same whichever service plan the car was on! They did not have a clue! The parts man said it was all the same and he only sells one. Just shows how poor some dealers really are when you pay a premium and trust them with your pride and joy!

Just to confirm you want 5w-40 Fully synthetic for Petrol VRS!

Some dealers only use the longlife oil to avoid any mistakes using the wrong oil.

Not sure how they cover their costs, unless fixed folk pay the correct value for the oil, and variable over the odds.

If that is the case, 504 is still wrong, 507 00 covers everything.

Help! 504? 507 00? Can someone explain?! Please!

Its the vag specification that the engine requires. The newest diesels with dpf filters need 507 00 but it means it is backwards compatible in effect as you can use in cars that state 503, 504, 506.

The grade of the oil is largely irrelevant as long as it meets the minimum spec.

Thanks!

That's not 504 00 spec oil though, and I'm sure it should be 5/30w. :wonder:

Doesnt need to be its 505 spec and a 5w40 which imo is better when running mapped and if you drive un granny like. :p
