Fabia 1.4 MPI Temp Sensor Coolant Leak

Featured Replies

Hi all,

We've recently upgraded an ageing (but trusty!) Felicia with a 2000 Fabia 1.4 MPi, very very impressed with the car and my car is a Volvo S70 2.5 which probably cost about twice as much when it was new (ironically is now worth about half of the Fabia haha).

Anyway, we've noticed some slight coolant loss coming from the front of the car on the passenger side. I removed the under tray to try and source the leak, which is quite difficult as it doesn't leak when the car is running and seems to only leak after being warm and then left for 20minutes, where it leaves a small patch on the drive. I believe I've traced the source of the leak to the temperature sensor in the radiator.

First of all does the temp sensor in the rad have a rubber o-ring (I've read some don't??). What is the best way to access it to remove as access seems very limited? Plus does anyone know the actual size of the o-ring? I found it on Jorily Skoda but I'm loathe to spend £2.50 on postage through the online store when it can just go in an envelope!

Thanks for any help!

There is no o ring in the thermoswitch on the radiator. I understand they were not originally fitted with a metal washer, but fitting one can fix a leak. Also seen mention of someone using PTFE tape.

I *think* the part number for the washer is N0138272 which is an A22X27 washer. Need to investigate some more.

Edit - yep pretty certain the part number is correct. Shouldn't cost much at a Skoda dealers.

Also coat the threads with a product called Atmos available from most plumber outlets. It will never leak again.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll get hold of a washer from Skoda and whack some PTFE tape on - should be good, will report back when I get a chance to give it a go!

Has anyone got any tips for removing the sensor? No idea where to start as access just seems a tad ridiculous!

Jack the car up and remove plastic under bit then it's alright, that's how I did it.

coolant installation must be drained to remove the sensor for repair?

A fibre washer does the trick too, thats whats usually used when replacing the sensors on our ageing Corrados! They never started life with one either.
