Oil?

Featured Replies

Now I'm sure on here there is a thread as to what oils to fill our furby's but what I would like to know is, from your experience guys n girls what brand and weight do you recommend??

Your replies will be greatfully received.

Quantum Synta 5w40

Available from your local dealer far cheaper than Halfrauds etc.

Also you're guaranteed that it's the right one

Thanks guys your amazing, what sort a price we talking??? First year I've done it as last year I had it done with the cambelt change (that hurt alot!!!!).

Last week from my local dealer I paid £36.89 for:

Air filter

Oil filter

Sump plug

5L oil

The oil you must use in your vRS must be 5W-40 and meet 505.01 spec. You can also now use the more expensive long life stuff too (504/507 5W-30).

I normally buy 5 litres of Millers XFE-PD oil from my local Motor Factors for about £30. You can buy Quantum stuff which a lot of dealers use for less than that. I think you buy that from either Euro Car Parts or Trade Part Specialist (TPS).

Quantum Synta 5w40

As in quantum synta gold? The long life stuff?

What's better that or platinum?

It was platinum the stuff I got

When you say dealers, take care. I think Skoda near me wanted silly money for the stuff. The VW on my doorstep wasn't much better, I'm sure it was around £30 or more. So not always so cheap from the locals

Not so many years back I walked in VW at a weekend and they sold me the platinum for £17 !

This time I got it delivered for about £18ish (perhaps with delivery on top I can't recall) from the dartford vw online I think, but I was getting my oil, partners long life and other bits at the time.

Ah it was shop4volkswagen. £25.62 delivered :)

I'm running millers CFS 5w40 in mine ATM, I paid for it but I wanted a High quality oil so wasn't too bothered. Still worry a wee bit about it being suitable for a PD engine but I've run it for over a 1000 miles and no issues, car is alot quieter on start up and sounds more solid under acceleration also has a triple ester formulae so can only be a good thing.

Whilst that oil is suitable for high performance engines it doesn't meet spec VW 505 01 hence is unsuitable for the PD engine. The thread below is one of many mentioning the risks of not using the correct spec oil.

£15 for 5L of oil at Skoda. I change it every 6 months as it so cheap. Cars been fine. The dealer may try and sell you some £75 shell oil as the fabia vRS is a 'high performance diesel' I laughed in his face and told him to get me the oil they use for a PD130 octy....Low and behold the same engine and they use the £15 stuff.

Dealer didnt know where to look

The Competition CFS (Fully sythetic) oil is the correct viscosity (5W-40), however there is no indication of any VW specs on their website.

PERFORMANCE PROFILE:

• Manufactured to far exceed the requirements of API SL/CF and ACEA A3/B4.

• Ideal for fast road or track day use, especially in engines where a 5w30 is normally specified.

• Suitable for operating at 125°C with peak temperatures up to 150°C.

You need an oil that meats VW 505.01. This means you will need the (semi-synthetic) XFE-PD which meets 505.01 spec. Or the more expensive XF Long Life 5W-30, which meets VW 504.00, 507.00 spec.

I know there is no proof of it being suitable but I got a few opinions, mainly from opie oils who say it will be fine and is designed to far exceed the requirements of the VW spec. They have been running it for a while now in a PD engined Leon with no issues. Also if you look at a PD oil fOr example castrol edge, you can match up all the spec and approvals of the millers CFS so I think it will be more than ok. Saying that I change oil every 5000 so at the next interval I will swap it out just to be on the safe side. 5000 interval shouldn't cause too much damage if it's do any.

stevobeavo what oil is that for £15?

It was platinum the stuff I got

Platinum has been replaced by silver Synta.

Seems like it has gone up in price a fair bit. but ring your dealer up. I got mine for just over £3 a litre about 5-6 months ago.
