Thinking of getting a new octavia.. should I wait though?

Have you considered the 1.6 MPi?

Older engine, less performance, less efficient but some fantastic deals around at the moment.

After driving a 1.6 MPI I cannot understand why anyone would choose one, they are noisy, rough and gutless !

Hmmm

Quote from MSN Cars on the Octy FL: "Underpinnings donated from the previous Golf...."

Technically true perhaps, as it is of the Golf Mk6 or even the Scirocco, but try and find reviews of those where they say that in those terms.

The impression given is that the Octy is based on "old" VW Golf bits which have already been superseded. This is surely slightly misleading.

I can only agree. Also another reason not to trust what 'MSN Cars' write too!

Absolutely, that's why they're now being sold off cheap. Local dealer here has a stack of them, delivery miles, for silly money. Still wouldn't though!

Cheap, cheap, cheap.

Reading the opening post this is one of the OP's main priorities.

It may not be the most refined engine but guess what, its cheap! For less than 10,000 miles per year its worth taking a test drive.

Cheap for a reason. Cost is a consideration for everyone. So is value for money though...

Resale would be interesting.

I wonder how many people would actually know the difference between the 1.6 TSi and a 1.6 MPi.

I know the difference from frequenting this forum but I wonder if John Smith off the street would.

I haven't driven either but I wonder how bad the MPi really is, especially if you hadn't previously driven the TSi?

We're comparing the 1.6MPI and the 1.4TSI. So you get better performance, a smoother unit, cheaper tax (£55 annual saving) and more economy.

I think the average motorist would certainly notice at least one out of those three. Most likely the last two.

Definitly not interested in the 1.6.. although i'd love a 1.4tsi for that kind of money!

Quite looking forward to taking the test drive tomorrow.. lots will depend on the size of the boot though I guess.

Doing the sums and removing the VAT looks about £15.5k ish for an elegance estate. Almost a straight swap for what I will get for my FL2 .

There seems to be lots of renderings of the new car, but these seem about the most likely:

Very nice, but is it just me or is this starting to look like a BMW?

1.6MPI competes with the 1.2TSI - the TSI wins with far better torque, economy and refinement.

The 1.4TSI is even better again. It's so quiet that my Dad's neighbour was standing next to the car and didn't realise that it was still ticking over. It's economy is impressive too, it can get to 50mpg, we've done it. More than enough power when needed too.

I got one of these, changing from a 10 year old 1.9TDi. Agreed it doesn't have the low down punch of the diesel, and probably not of the TSi, but I certainly don't find it noisy and rough - in fact it's pretty refined, but maybe I drive it like an old man

I didn't test drive the TSi, and have to admit that 11 grand for a brand new car, with pretty good spec and 3 years warranty and breakdown cover swung it for me. I don't think it's a question of 'how bad' the MPI is, rather how good are the other options, depending upon how much you have to spend...

You looking at a private sale of the Freelander then?

Well, will see what I get offered at p/ex.

It's currently about to be due a service...and that probably wont get picked up by the dealer. If i sell it privately it will cost me a about £450 to service it first.

I think it may be about the same.. so for simplicity will probably p.ex.

I can only speak of how I found it, this was a demonstrator with less than 5k on the clock,

I haven't owned a petrol for about 4 years (1996 1.3 Fiesta) but do drive a few every now and then and have not driven one as bad as the MPi for a very long time.

To me the advantage of petrol over diesel is a quieter engine that is smoother - on tickover at least, but unfortunately the one I drove was neither of them (it was certainly noisier than my 2.0 CR, and not far off a PD! when pulling away it sounded gruff like a 3 cylinder engine, it's ONLY saving grace was the MPG which according to the trip computer (mine was 10% optimistic) was returning 40MPG, so probable closer to a true 36MPG this was doing the same routes that I get 44 - 46MPG (actual) not bad at all for a budget engine.

I aim to get into a 1.4TSi the next time the car needs to go in as most owners rate them highly, but I am a bit suspicious -- until I drive one, it will also be interesting to see if these will do the mileage expected nowadays.

It's definitely quieter in mine - lovely and smooth too. I'm still driving it like a diesel though (10 years of learnt behaviour!) so am starting to appreciate that to access the power that is there I need to use more revs! Sounds like the one you drove was a bit of a dog! I've recently done a couple of 100 mile+ runs, boot 3/4 full and 3-up and returned 45+ mpg on both, so am pleased that (depending on driving style) reasonable economy can be got :)

Pleased to hear that yours meets your expectations and YOU are happy with it, because ATEOTD that is ALL that matters

Indeed - did look at a vRS or two, but condition wasn't all I wanted, and this deal was very good - even if for a year or two, and then I'll get the vRS!

Hi all. just a quick update to say it was a really decent drive (1.4tsi) and very likely I will be placing an order in the next week or two. Just need to think about shifting my FL2. Boot space was wider and deeper than than the FL2 too.

had the car for about 45 mins, a little town driving and the motorway too, and returned 42mpg.

Very very quiet sounding engine too..but it would be to me after 2 years of driving a 2.2 diesel about.

Thanks.

Not looking good for next year release, I'd just be happy with the new badge for mine!

That just looks like a photoshopped Superb to me. Not vastly different from the current Octavia.
