CCTV for home

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am looking for a CCTV system for home and would like any guidance/recommendations you guys might have from having installed your own systems. My requirements are:

- 4 camera support (any more is a bonus, but not required at this point)

- motion detection

- pre-detection buffer (say 5-10 seconds before motion is detected)

- HDD (happy to supply disk myself)

- Network (for remote viewing) - bonus if it works with WP7

- VGA output (15 pin d sub)

3 of the cameras would be external, so IR support required for lets say 10-15metres (10 would be ok)

I want the system to be record a good quality image - none of the fuzzy rubbish we used to see on Crimewatch back in the 1990s!

Most systems I have seen come bundled with pre-made cables, I am not fussed by that, especially as one the cameras would be down the garage so maybe 50m away (cable run length).

I don't want to spend a fortune, but the system needs to be up to the job. I have seen this package which appears to pretty much cover all my requirements: http://www.iviewcameras.co.uk/Avtech_4_Channel_Networked_DVR_with_USB_VGA_-_Remote_18M_DIYBUN-KPD674-13203/version.asp

Thanks :-)

HMM right up my street.... i have my own buisness doing cctv, access control, security alarms and electrical contracting

Stay away from AVtech stuff its crap every DVR i've ever come across from that company has been cheap crap and gone faulty in 2 years i've put alot of DVR's in far the best are samsung IMHO or an american company Robox ain't bad (all made in china anyway)or CnM secure aren't bad as far as kits go i don't personally recommend kit's i prefer tailor made to the job but it costs more to the customer

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/500GB-8-CH-4-CAMERA-CCTV-MONITOR-SYSTEM-KIT-SECURITY-/160639617749?pt=UK_CCTV&hash=item2566de0ad5

try that instead of your kit 420tvl or above is fine

Just looked at those, not sure they support the pre-motion detection buffer to grab a few seconds of footage before the motion detection starts the recording? The farnell site seemed to 404 when trying to open the PDF with the technical specs in.

What sort of Samsung unit would you recommend, links, etc?

Thanks,

Matt

We have a Killer XDH at work and it's brilliant. So much better than the AV-tech stuff that it replaced. The integral DVD burner is also a quite handy. I can get you some examples of the quality if you like?

I can't comment on the cameras as we use only internal dome cameras, but I've had plenty of dealings with CCTV direct and they've always been very helpful when I've thrown 500 questions at them.

It's here for just the DVR or here bundled with 4 cameras

You should also consider whether you need planning permission -

PART 33

CLOSED CIRCUIT TELEVISION CAMERAS

Class A

Permitted development

A. The installation, alteration or replacement on a building of a closed circuit television camera to be used for security purposes.

Development not permitted

A.1 Development is not permitted by Class A if—

(a)the building on which the camera would be installed, altered or replaced is a listed building or a scheduled monument;.

(b)the dimensions of the camera including its housing exceed 75 centimetres by 25 centimetres by 25 centimetres;.

©any part of the camera would, when installed, altered or replaced, be less than 250 centimetres above ground level;.

(d)any part of the camera would, when installed, altered or replaced, protrude from the surface of the building by more than one metre when measured from the surface of the building;.

(e)any part of the camera would, when installed, altered or replaced, be in contact with the surface of the building at a point which is more than one metre from any other point of contact;.

(f)any part of the camera would be less than 10 metres from any part of another camera installed on a building;.

(g)the development would result in the presence of more than four cameras on the same side of the building; or.

(h)the development would result in the presence of more than 16 cameras on the building..

Conditions

A.2 Development is permitted by Class A subject to the following conditions—

(a)the camera shall, so far as practicable, be sited so as to minimise its effect on the external appearance of the building on which it is situated;.

(b)the camera shall be removed as soon as reasonably practicable after it is no longer required for security purposes..

Interpretation of Class A

A.3 For the purposes of Class A—

“camera”, except in paragraph A.1(B), includes its housing, pan and tilt mechanism, infra red illuminator, receiver, mountings and brackets; and

“ground level” means the level of the surface of the ground immediately adjacent to the building or, where the level of the surface of the ground is not uniform, the level of the highest part of the surface of the ground adjacent to it.

Just looking at that.... looks nice.... a bit expensive, but nice

Any idea on the lengths of your cable runs?

Was impressed with this company's products BigBrotherSystems after looking at the Maplin/Farnell offerings. Good support too!

I've also dealt with CCTV Direct. Ask them to upgrade one of the kits to include the 650 Cameras. 540 -> 650 may not sound like a big jump in quality but it really does make a difference. More expensive - but worth it. We had a mix of cameras at work and the little *****s could be identified by the police on 650s but not the others.
