Electric window - Hard to Fix?

Featured Replies

The passenger side window goes down but not up - sounds like something has broken.

My question is how hard is it to fix?

This will be my first time getting in to a door panel - I'm fairly practical and have some electrical knowledge - Are there too many things to go wrong or should I have a go?

Thanks

Is that Electrical or ELECTRONIC knowledge ?

HAVE YOU TRIED RESETTING IT FIRST ?

THEN

If the window has control from both passenger and drivers door switches, and it is not going up, then it could be a simple as the rocker switch collapsed in the down position

Lift both of them out and disconnect one wire from each post

Use a piece of wire to short each one to the post you took it off, one side at a time, IF it works then the switch is stuck

(more professional to meter the switch but do you have a meter and know how to use it) ?

If that does not work then you need to check the LOOM, look for a break at the door to A panel, (again meter it for continuity if you know how)

After that it is off door panel and check further ie apply power to the motor at source

It could be just dirt sticking the window enough to stop the motor lifting it

(It is easier to start with the switches than to remove the door panels, even though it is long winded IMHO )

Good luck

Hi,

The problem is obviously mechanical as you can hear a motor turning when either switch is pushed but the window will not go up - I just wanted to know if getting to the mechanism via the door pannel is a total ball ache or needs some special knowledge.

(I'm a stage lighting technician so use I use 3 phase power down to DC electronics at work)

Cheers

I'm curious how do you get the window to raise when you say you are unable to use any window switch to raise the window??

Cable driven by motor does the job of raising/lowering.

Replacement of complete panel holding all the gubbins is the normal (except glass), kept in place by self-tappers or/ and rivets which require drilling-out.

There is info on this site how to replace this door card/panel.

With both front windows open, put the key in the driver door lock. Turn fully to the lock position and hold. Do both windows go up?

Some faults cause a good motor to makes a noise but not run.

mmm sounds annoyingly hard - got a Haynes manual coming in the post hopefully that'll give me the step by step guide I need

thanks

Sorry it will not Haynes = clear as mud (unless the copy I bought from Halfrauds is a fake ink jet printed pixs on blotting paper)

Search on here for leaking doors seals, you will find excellent photo aided technique of removing door panels,

My Fabia a 51plate 2002 with 87K on the clock. Wound the passengers window down today it went half way and stopped with a clunking noise. Tried to power it up nothing happened. Tried to lower it again which it went all the way down and now won't come up althgough the mechanism sounds like its working. SME FROM BOTH WINDOW SWICHES ANYONE ANY CLUES?

Not 100% sure, but I seem to remember, something about resetting

You hold the button/switch in the down position, THEN turn on the ignition and hold for ten seconds, then switch off, hold sw in up position turn on ignition and hold sw for tens seconds

(THIS maybe just to reset if the ONE TOUCH has stopped working, not sure of the memory banks these days :-)

Yes mate, you got it wrong there. You are thinking of the one touch reset and all you do is hold the switch down till the window bottoms out and keep th e switch operated until the relay clicks, about 5 to 10 secs.

What do you suggest if your windows are doing nothing........ziltch not a peep both stuck in up position !!!!!!!!!!

Check the fuse first.

This happened to me a few weeks ago

Passenger side window not coming up and motor emitting a crunching glass sound (so I stopped immediately)

Took it to the local garage and he said he's seen this a lot - its the plastic fitting that holds the window to the motor arm - apparently its a bit of a weak point with these cars - its a flimsy brittle part.

He ordered two and took panels off and replaced them - actual parts only a tenner but labour much more

One of the main causes of window mechanism failure is because the window 'U' slides at each side don't get lubricated, just spray carefully into the grooves with a silicone spray.

Mr Sheen works wonders.

DB.

Surely with both windows completely dead this is an ELECTRICAL problem, there really is nothing to suggest simultaneous mechanical failure of both window mechanisms in the up position!

It'll be a fuse or the control module.
