so previous owner had some big system in the car apparently

when i got it, it had a **** headunit, **** amp, **** components.

i bought some £70 speakers, a sub, and took them to some guy to fit everything, and he fitted another amp too (one amp for speakers, one for sub)

problem is, its all unsecure in the boot being chucked around everywhere, lots of weight and not really a wonderful sound

was thinking of ditching both amps + sub and getting some really good front speakers and just putting up with the sound. i wanna strip the rear so it would be good but what would you recommend?

if you think it wont be good enough i'd at least like to lose an amp, and bolt the other amp to the side of the sub, tidying up the wiring and stuff. where my current sub has been chucked around its all dented and looks **** so want a new one anyway.

any recommendation on what to go for? i have ZERO ICE experience, complete n00b

Upgraded speakers would be perfect of say with a bit of soundproofing, I think the sound system in skodas is immense in comparison to other cars I've had and been in, plus you can strip the rear :)

I've got Alpine components in mine and the quality was quite surprising even just off the headunit.

Really? Bar my MK2 Ibiza, its been the worst!

I'd love to just rip the speakers out and fire in some nice big beefy components but I dont really think that'll help.

Never the less i'll stick a sub in at the weekend and see how that goes.

Sounds to me like you're adding ballast.

I'd just get some decent speakers in the front and ditch the extra weight.

Think decent quality.

For the front end, a 2x150 watt amp. Though this would be a reasonable starting point.

Front components: The better front components are a little deep for mounting in the Fabia's front doors. Mounting depth of around 60-62mm is the limit before you hit the window guide at the back and the door card on the front. Arguably, it's better to modify the door cards an amount so you don't restrict the choice of speakers. Though I have JL Audio VR650s. They "just" fit.

Overall, though, if you like deeper bass whilst driving, you'll need a sub of some description. The big, flat Pioneer thing (TS-WX77A) is probably the best option for retaining boot space. But it's become rather pricey unless you go buy it on the continent. Three years ago it was possible to get it for £180, now it's £280 over here!!! On the continent, you can find it for 220 euro.

You haven't mentioned head unit. If you want CD quality rather than MP3 quality, or even if you want the best out of MP3s, it's best to get a head unit that has a reasonable EQ setup. Ideally, you'd want a number of preset settings that you can then tweak.

This one would be a good starting point.

Luke - have a listen to my car at Combe, its a bit of a different approach, but the setup weighs bugger all. :)

if your removing the seats etc from the rear there is going to be a lot of reverberation ( my experience from both my striped cars tells me this ) so i would go for some decent front speakers and aftermarket HU to power them, i have standard speaker (i think) and a aftermarket HU and i like the sound so it depends on what you are aiming for really. Or find away to fit some 6x9 and amp them and see how that works.

Never put 6x9's near a car if you want decent sound quality, all they are is a compromise

but if they are good 6x9 and they are amped correctly i would not say they are a compromise especially if the standard rear speaker are pants!

You don't want big rear speakers though if you are looking for a decent sound stage ;) ditch the rear speakers completely!

Hi guys, don't mean to hijack this thread but what size speakers are in the MK1 Fabia VRS?

Rears are tiny, spacky things that should only be used for a minor rear fill.

2 approaches are favoured.

1) Ditch the standard H/U and fit something beefier to drive the standard speakers. Rumour has it that the front setup is reasonable if properly driven.

2) Ditch the front speakers and fit replacement components and an amp, driven off the standard H/U.

As for the rear, personally, I'd leave the standard speakers in but fade them down to provide the minimum of rear fill.

There are a number of "sub" options available. Best to do a search but rane from yer standard sub box filling the boot to slimline active boxes, to wheel well or side panel built in enclosures.
