1.8 whine noise on startup

Featured Replies

When starting my 1.8 from cold I get a whine noise as if something is adjusting/moving. At first I thought it was something to do with the starter motor. Not sure now. Anyone else have the same thing? Its only when starting from cold this happens.

Video now on flickr that you can here it in Whine/Groan on start.

does the noise change or go away if the clutch pedal is pressed?

Clutch pedal is always pressed as the car won't let you start it without it being pressed.

Ok, Ive read and reread that but I dont understand it. You have to push the clutch pedal down to start the car??! :wonder:

With a manual change, the car won't start unless the clutch pedal is depressed. Presumably for those who can't check the car is in neutral before starting.

In which country are we now referring to? That surprised me as that isnt how mine works here in the UK!

Mine won't start unless clutch is depressed either

Nor mine - and there's a message on the maxidot display telling you to depress the clutch in order to start the engine.

I can also confirm this is the case.

Yours does or doesnt require the clutch to be pressed down?

Think it depends how old the car is.

My December 2009 TDI 140 doesn't need the clutch depressed, but a newer one I had on loan did require the clutch to be depressed before starting.

Sorry for the confusion, mine does require the clutch pedal to be pressed down before starting.

Interesting. I had no idea the newer ones had this change but Ive driven other Yeti to mine also and they didnt require it. Mines an April 2010 build.

Erm, anyone get the whine noise on startup?

I dont so cant help Im afraid.

(sorry for taking things off topic btw)

I think the clutch is something to do with diesels, my 1.2 does not need to depress clutch to start.

With regards to whining, is it a louder than usual groan (for about 2 seconds) and rev is higher than idle for about 30 seconds?

No, must be age related as my 1.2 definitely insists I depress the clutch.

Yes. I suspect the car that doesn't require the clutch to be depressed to start is actually far older than the date of first ownership would suggest. My dealer informs me (and so it must be true :giggle: ) that I can get hold of a 1.8TSi for immediate delivery from Emden docks. Is anyone near there to confirm a stockpile of RHD petrol cars?

Possibly, the fanbelt has slipped out of alignment?

Had a new Yeti since June 2010, the clutch is not depressed to start up! (2.0 CR TDI 110)

I've put a video flickr in which you can here the noise:

Whine/groan on start

I had a similar noise, many years ago, on a car were the starter motor didn't disengage properly on start up.

Back then it was just a case of take off the starter and clean up the pinion with WD40 or similar.

These days you probably need a computer....:dull:

Back in the fifties, when I learnt to drive (in a bedford 5 ton lorry) - that's when you had to 'double-de-clutch' to change gears as there was no syncro-mesh, I was taught always to depress the clutch when starting as this releases the pressure plate thus taking loading from the same, giving easier starting & prolonging battery life etc, etc. Oh the joys of crank starting the lorry on a freezing morning when the battery was on the wane!!
