Can I get to the back of the stereo via glovebox?

Featured Replies

As subject...

Just fitted a Bolero and noticed that the right drivers speaker is a bit intermittent.

I wonder if it's because I've managed to crunch the cables up behind the stereo - and I find it bloody hard work to put the stereo in and not crunch it up.

Before I start dismantling my glovebox - my thinking is I can get to the wires from behind the stereo from the direction of the glovebox, hold onto the wires, then move the stereo from the front, put it back, whilst holding the cable in the right place not to scrunch it all up.

Is my theory sound?

That or my speaker is genuinely knackered - if that is the case then I'll be on the lookout for replacement speakers for the front to beef the quality up anyway ;)

If you have skinny hands like me, then remove the lower trim next to the seat, and you may just gain enough room to get to the bottom of the radio to give a push.

Otherwise easiest and best way to avoid airbag issues is radio out again.

Airbag? Eh? :-|

The passenger airbag disable switch is inside the glovebox (or at least it is in my Mk2). When I dropped my glovebox down to fit the radio I was very nervous about unplugging the wires in case I got an airbag in my face. So I didn't, instead I dropped it enough but kept the wire attached.

You may also get to the back of the radio from popping out the top vents. I've never tried but a search on the forum should tell you the clip locations.

Sorry - having dropped a glovebox once I should have realised what you meant :)

Guess I'll have to pull the radio out =/

Hi, could you expand on the passenger airbag disable switch? I had my glove box out to fit a Dension ipod adaptor, but only wires to the glove box was for the light (I think anyway). just want to make sure I have not screwed any thing up.

There is an airbag switch to the left of the glovebox - I left mine connected and let the glovebox hang in the air for 5 minutes...

The problem arises if you unplug the airbag switch and turn the ignition on - you'll get an airbag warning light on the dashboard that'll need clearing by either taking it to a dealer or using VCDS to clear it.

If you unplug it, but reconnect it without ever putting the keys in - you will be ok

I've since noticed that it isn't the car's speakers being intermittent, it's my ears :) Mine is working bloody fine.

I would've been surprised if you'd crushed the cables behind the stereo, there's bloody loads of room back there. Anyway, glad it was just your ears!
