Spare Tyre Option - Worth getting?

Is it worth getting the spare tyre option? It seems to take a lot of space in the boot and the Yeti is supplied with a bottle of tyre seal and a compressor to deal with normal punctures - so is it worth losing all that boot space for the unlikely event of a puncture not mendable by the gunk?

When did anyone last have a puncture anyway??

I had my last puncture this summer. I have it every 5-8 years. Then our Yeti will arrive in a couple of weeks, I will be getting one of these

It contains drill, plug, glue and CO2-bottles to repair the puncture. I keep the boot space and don't have to use the nasty bottle of tyre seal :D

My last puncture was a few years ago. Hit a pothole. Cut a 2 inch gash in the sidewall. No repair kit would have solved the problem.

I have a spare.

You decide what you will be comfortable with.

Kitten and I opted for the 'gunk' as we wanted as much room in the boot as we could.

In the event of the gunk not being able to seal the puncture so we can 'limp' home, then we'll call Skoda Assistance. :yes:

Be aware that many tyre centres will not repair a tyre once you have filled it with sealant so "its a new tyre, sir"... £150

Fully agree, no yeti,( Octavia) but I have a full sized alloy in the boot , space saver in the shed :thumbup:

the last time I had a puncture I actually had to call out skoda assist anyway as I couldn't get the wheel off to put the spare on, it was welded on with all the salt and crud on the roads. I don't think I'd be comfortable with the gunk either.

A Couple of years ago, my wife hit some metal in the road while in her Smart (no spare wheel, just the sealant and a compressor). Gash in the tyre too big to seal, eneded up being recovered to a local garage who had to order a new tyre (Smart size not in stock). Therefore car out of use for over a aday.

I ordered a spare wheel for my Yeti.

At the end of the day you have to weigh up, do you want a spare wheel, or more room in the boot.

Kitten an I wanted the extra space, and are aware that the 'gunk' can ruin a tyre, but hey, if the tyre has a HUGE gash in it it's ruined anyway.

We also know that the gunk is designed to get you to the nearest garage for repair/replacement. Much like the 'space-saver' wheels, they're not designed for continued use, just as a stop-gap measure.

AND....................what suite one Yeti driver may not suit another Yeti driver. emoticon-0143-smirk.gif

I suppose it's our different requirements that makes us all interesting people :yes:

Would say 50% of punctures I have had over the years the tyre was damaged well beyond roadside repair. Therefore have both the factory fitted spare wheel and VW compressor + gunk which I obtained from flee bay for £27 :D Living out in the sticks with long rural commutes and not having a spare is just asking for trouble :yes:

From the swedish Biltema. It cost 199 skr = 20 euro. I have seen the same kit in other stores. But in the UK, sorry I don't know.

One of my friend at work used it on his car, and another on his motorcycle this summer. Both with great result.

I for one prefer to have the added peace of mind of the spare wheel. I hope I never have to use it but in the event would sooner have the wheel than the gunge. As others have said it is likely the gunge wouldn't work in many cases.

For me the less boot space is not that important as it's enough for my needs, so you have to weigh up the pros and cons.

I leaned towards the no spare camp, becuase of the increase boot capacity.

In retrospective, I would have ordered the spare and order the non-spare boot floor separately, put the spare in the garage if I want to have it fitted again in the future.

It cost considerably more to order the skinny spare afterwards.

Is that definite? Seems a major expense to buy a new tyre for a minor nail puncture in the centre of the tread?

Quite often they don't want the extra hassle of cleaning it all out.

Much quicker and easier (and more profitable) for them to sell you a new tyre.

I damaged a wheel on the M25 last January and then punctured another irreparably - side wall damage, getting out of the way of an emergency vehicle.

I would never have a vehicle without a spare. I also have a FULL size spare winter tyre and wheel, which I will carry in the winter......

The tyre pressure monitor in my Octavia reported a slow puncture last month and again a fortnight ago. (I had checked the tyre pressures on the first occasion and put some more air into 1 tyre.) When I checked them a fortnight ago it was the same tyre losing air so I took it off and eventually discovered a thorn at the edge of the tread. When I removed it, the air hissed out!

If I hadn't got a spare I wouldn't have been able to take the tyre for repair! As it was, I have a full-sized alloy spare in the boot, so I could take it down to my local tyre repair specialists who gave it a vulcanised patch (as it was at the edge of the tread) for under £20.

As I'm waiting for my new car to arrive, I wouldn't have been at all happy to have to buy a new tyre! If I was buying a Yeti, I'd have a spare wheel sitting in my garage for times like this even if I didn't carry it around in the car at all times.

I didn't have a choice with stock vehicles, but would have gone for a spare anyway, People always say about the loss of boot space, but no-one seems to mention the storage space you get along side the spare, I used to carry a breakdown kit in my boot (jumps leads, tow rope, and a few tools), plus a torque wrench and a few other bits, but this all fits in the storage alongside the spare, plus more space, gets rid of all the bits and pieces.

So it really depends what kind of boot space you want(does that make sense?)

And no i'm not paranoid, and have never used any of this kit on my own car, but has come in useful many times as a good samaritan (esp when those 3 young ladies in their saxo had broken down-(and yes I am a reasonably young man in comparison!!!) B)

Can you do that? What parts do you order? Can all the bits & pieces with the spare wheel be easily be removed from the boot without major surgery?
