Oil consumption on 2.0TFSI

Featured Replies

Hello,

No doubt this topic has been raised and asked numerous times before; I am having trouble locating these however.

I recently purchased a 2006 06 plate petrol Octavia VRS with 37500 miles on the clock. In the past 6-7 weeks and roughly 2000 miles of fairly low paced drving the car has consumed 1l of oil.

Is this normal for this engine? I ask as my car has 12 months warranty so if there is an issue the sooner I know the better so I can get it fixed.

Regards

Calum

I think they say 1L per 1000m is ok so yours is fine, some use oil some dont,my 2008 tfsi uses a bit of oil (only used 1L in the last 10k)& its done 23k.

There will be a few people along with some answers soon.

From my experience and talking to a few other owners about the same subject. There doesnt seem to be an average consumption figure. Some people use virtually no oil between services and others have said they use more than you have indicated.

If the car drives ok and theres no obvious problems (or clouds of blue smoke out of the exhaust) it's nothing the be too concerned about.

I would say I use a similar amount although I havent actually kept an accurate record of it but I have had to top mine up between services. Mine is modified and IMO I would expect it to use slightly more oil than standard.

On a realted note the engine can sometimes sound a bit noisy/rattle but again talking to many different owners and even a couple od tuning companies this is normal.

Enjoy the car its a great all round package B)

Thanks very much for that! It drives fine with no obvious signs of problems; I had been listening hard due to the oil consumption, at one point I thought it may be lacking in pull but I dispelled that thought with a 3rd and 4th gear blast. On topping up the oil I have been using Catrol Edge 5W 30, Is this the best choice for the car?

Cheers for that.

Just concerned as I have read increased oil consumption could indicate a dodgy turbo.

I've an 07 TFSI with 50k on the clock. It's used about 1l of oil every 10k since new.

Remember to use VAG approved oils 504/507

Same from me, if not slightly more - I'm about a quarter way through my second 5 litre bottle of oil having covered 41k miles, 52k on the clock.

It's commonly regarded as sometimes being a thirsty engine - a google search will find you a load of hits from cars with this engine e.g. the Leon and the Golf etc.

mine uses about 1L per 1500 miles - it's on '06 petrol vrs also. It is a bit "smoky" on full throttle but then the oil has to go somewhere. It's not as bad a diesel, or a car that's clearly got worn rings.

I would say mine uses about 1 litres per 10k. VAG will say that anything near 1 litre / 1000km is 'normal' albeit expensive. I got a 4L Castrol Edge when it was 25% off in Halfords for £32 saves buying the top up litres.

As mine is on fixed servicing I use 0w/40 Castrol Edge Sport spec oil as advised.

High performance engines operate at slightly higher tempartures depending on driving styles and also depends on the oils used. I am going to hazard a guess that my oil consumption will be a bit pants since it was serviced by the garage from which I bought it from so have probably put chip fat in it but that is the nature of the beast.

My Seat Ibiza Cupra TDI oil consumption was terrible and that was serviced by SEAT.

Least you don't have a Mazda RX8...they drink oil like petrol!!

You must be kidding. 1 liter of oil per 1000km, or better to say, 1 liter of oil per 70 or 80 liters of petrol?? That's almost oil vs. petrol mixture which two stroke engines chainsaws and grass cutters are using. If my car would be using 1 liter of oil per 1000km, it would be back on service already, and I wouldn't buy "this is normal usage" excuse.

On my previous Octavia (1.6 petrol) I never purred any oil between service intervals (15.000km), and yes I was checking it, and there was always enough oil. On current one (2.0TSI vRS) I don't have enough kilometers to say anything, but for first 4000km, I didn't notice any oil level change. But I agree, I didn't put new one through some harder driving yet.

Our Fabia vrs never used a drop and my old mk1 standard octy vrs never used a drop.

My modded 4x4 was oil thirsty as I would have expected and my mk2 vrs seems to use oil but when I researched it and checked it out its well within normal stanards for this engine and it drives spot on so i'm not concerned at all B)

In summary although it may seem a high oil consumption level compared to some other cars for this type of engine it is well within the normal parameters. IMO If you look after your car enough to know what the oil consumption is you will defo notice if theres somthing more to worry about.

I had a Peugeot 406 that drank even more. Pugs of the day were designed to burn oil to help cool the engine, probably as a result of packaging constraints and cooling. The TFSI seems to be a hot engine even if you drive it slowly, which suggests its not got great cooling.

Definitely a hot engine I notice it every time I get out of the car and I'm no boyracer!

Hmmm I just noticed looking at the old service receipts that my car has been serviced every 10k, and the main dealer was using 10W-40 semi synthetic oil!!! Maybe that explains its high consumption, maybe not. Skoda UK has it recorded on variable servicing, which it clearly has not been on.

  • 1 year later...

I have burnt a bit of oil and had to top up a couple of times since I have owned my TSFI VRS last July 2011 but like all things it depends on use and what oil is being used and also how efficient the car is being. I will admit I give mine some stick sometimes and have had some long fast runs on the motorway which to be fair is going to burn a few mills of oil on any performance car lets be honest. The car has covered 64k so I have started to treat the engine to some Slick 50 750ml synthetic oil additive which it seems to absolutely love, really notice the difference...it smoothens it up and quietens it down a bit too...

2006 TSFI VRS Red 64k FSSH just had major service/belt/pumps change as part of the course avg 34mpg

My 2007 TFSI oil comsumption went from 1L every 1500-2000 miles to next to nothing after changing the PCV for the latest version.

Have a question about my oil consumption...

I've started putting a reminder on to check the oil level every 2 weeks as I've noticed it's chewing up oil quite madly. I know the TFSI engine can be quite thirsty for oil, but from what I've read, I think mine is using more than it should.

I checked it a couple of weeks ago and it was at the top of the MIN level. Topped it up to about 3/4 towards MAX. Just checked it yesterday (2 weeks later) and it's right at the top of the MIN again, so I've just had to put about 1.5Litres more in and it's now just under the MAX level.

I would estimate I've done around 400-450 miles since then.

Would you say this sounds excessive?

This is the first car I've owned that has used any oil between services, I managed about 7,500 miles since the service and had to top up with 1 litre of oil - which isn't bad I suppose...at least cmpared to some of thes stories......checked the receipt for the service that the Skoda dealer did and noted 5W/30 Castrol Edge is on the receipt (I'm on variable servicing.....)  so used the same to top up......bought a 1 litre bottle, and have bought a 4 litre bottle as well - will just decant 1 litre at a time into the smaller bottleto use as necessary - economy of scale and all that!

I believe 1 litre per 1000Km (Approx 600 miles) is considered within tolerance, any more becomes excessive. However I don't think you will have any comeback on Skoda on a 2006 car.

So really mines using a lot more than it should based on that information.

Before going to Skoda / Local VAG Specialist, I was hoping to get some advice on potential causes. Any ideas what parts of the car might be causing the excessive consumption?

Is there anyone who has noticed a substantial decrease in oil consumption after switching over to a newer revision pcv?

mine was just the same.

i go from max to min in around 3-400 miles, I plan to get rid after the new year so im not too fussed anymore, I have spent alot on oil in the two years ive owned it though.
