Dashboard sounds like a load of old sweetie wrappers!

Featured Replies

Just had a proper run out in the car today over to watch the motorbike road racing on Olivers Mount in Scarborough, well all the way there and all the way back an increasingly annoying and persistent rattle as emanated from the lower right hand side of the instrument binnacle. The sound is like someone crunching up and old sweet wrapper or even vaguely like an electrical shorting noise. If I press the dashboard in the area the sound comes from it stops but sets off again as soon as I let go.

Anyone else had such a rattle and with only 100miles on the clock should I really put up with this?

What is the normal reaction from dealers when sorting such issues on new cars?

I'm afraid it's a put up with it ! Rattles especially sweet wrapper sounds can be very difficult to stop ;)

This is the loudest sweet you have ever heard though.. even with the radio on you can hear it

Got one in the passenger door. Comes and goes. Is annoying but you ignore it after a while. Might be worth the dealer trip although reading on hear rattle resolution through the dealers is hit and miss. Good luck

I saw someone else say something about a polystyrene plate under the radio that squeeks like hell. Apparently you can take it out to no disadvantage what-so-ever? Mine does the same and it does my head in just not got the balls to try ripping the radio out =/

I have exactly the same noise...i can create the sound by appyling pressure(waggling)to the instrument binnacle. I would say it sounds like polystrene being rubbed together..VERY annoying..I was hoping that it would settle down, but my car has done 750miles... I will be taking it inot the dealer within the next couple of weeks

I misunderstood first time. Just seen where you guys are talking about.... I just pushed it really hard and my surround around the screen clicked and i've not heard it since? Maybe just lucky!

Problem with teh Fabia whilst they are prety solid and well bolted together they arent very well insulated. Our 4 month old vRS estate is already rattling, dont think the firm suspension helps matters. To be fair for what you get for your money you cant argue too much really.

Nearly 4000 miles on the clock and mine has just developed a really noisy rattle just below the passenger airbag and i just can't seem to get to it to stop it, really is p*****g me off :@ . Still flipping love the car though!!!!

Perhaps, but you can buy a used car for 1k and it doesnt make a sound... so why should a new one costing 15x as much?

Hi Adam totally agree skoda for some reson tend to rattle, plastic on plastic my older octavia estate I had w reg didn't rattle at all the newer built cars are the issue I think, trying to make them quicker and therefore built quality seems to be the issue, definitely the product and materials are good but it's the sound proofing and the lack of noise/ rattle inhibitors in-between the plastics and other ;(

My 9 year old Fiat Stilo only has 1 small rattle after 100k miles and running on Eibach springs and dampers for most of it's life.. now if that can manage to stay solid all that time surely my 100 mile old Skoda can!

The car is ace and it is exactly what I wanted but I am a little miffed that a loud rattle can be present so quickly.

I am going to have faith in my dealr and see what they can do on Wednesday when I go and see them.

Seems skodas are rattly lately... they had to clear that backlog somehow eh!

I just keep some actual sweet wrappers in my car now and so that masks the noise from the instruments.

I asked at the garage cos the salesman has a VRS he said his did it for a few months then disappeared . He said to leave it for now as taking the dash apart will just make it worse.

Wow. Didn't know this many people had squeeks in their car :( I don't have any. Closest I came to a 'squeek' was the sunglasses holder but then I realised it was my sunglasses inside

I'd be straight to the dealer if 'pressure' in the right place didnt fix it.

Mine was the same when new. I removed the binnacle surround and put a bit of insulation tape around all the fixing clips and added two small rubber buffers between the surround and the clear perspex over the instruments. Thankfully this has cured it,as it was driving me potty.

In general though ,my car has (had) more dash rattles than the one I test drove, which felt completely solid.Spent an hour one afternoon pulling all the removable panels off the dash and tightening up every nut and torx screw I could find. Strangley everything on the right hand side was pretty tight, but the left side was all slightly slack including the two torx scews in the n/s/f door trim(inside the handle) which was also moving around a bit.Done about 1500 miles since the tightening session and non of the rattles/squeaks have returned - all is as it should be now.

As you can tell I hate squeaks and rattles.

Don't think that dealers can do much about it except if something is loose which is very rare. There are many factors that make these rattles appear. Mainly it's plastic parts rubbing against each other due to heat and cold making them expand/retract and furthermore daily usage which produces vibrations from speed bumps, pot holes etc. making the effect over the years either worse or in some cases less.

I think it is something we have to get used to. I've sat in BMWs and Mercedes with expensive trims, and still I noticed rattles so price of the car is not the key factor for having interior issues. Probably it boils down to they way they are fitted/designed nowadays.

Part of the development & trialing of a new car is NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness). This is basically testing all parts of the car by subjecting them to various frequencies at low & high temps. Sometimes this testing can go on well into after the car is in production. I've tested parts that have been in production for about a year!

If you take it back to the dealer, & there are enough complaints, then the manufacturers will do something about it.

It may take a few visits to the dealer, bit I did it with my Mk1 Fabia vRS & was sorted eventually.

What exactly do they do in order to fix the issues - is it a matter of fitting further insulation (don't know how else to name) or replace the interior parts?

Sounds you got an interesting job :)

Well I will report back with what the dealer says tomorrow.

I've used the forum as reference a couple of times at the dealer and I just get a rolled eyes look back!

Yeah I used this a reference for when I was buying the car. Got the same expression. If the dealers had any sense they'd all do what some have done and check out these forums. Surely it would assist with their knowledge of the product they're trying to sell and they can clarify things with the big guys at Skoda so they don't look like numpties when you come to ask them and they go "I dunno".

E.g. I asked if my car would come with the IRC stickers. Response was "I've never even heard of these IRC Stickers" ......... In all fairness, he did go and check and got back to me via email a couple of days later. Was just a quick question that could have taken him 2 seconds to answer though.

I know my local dealer regularly lurks on these forums, Hayseldens of Doncaster.

Most dealers if not all has some one checking these forums, they would be stupid not too really ;)
