Helix clutch - jolt when upshifting

Featured Replies

It's been a good few miles since I had it fitted now. I've got used to the heavy pedal (doesn't feel heavy at all to me any more), but I still get a small jolt forward when shifting briskly.

It's probably me worrying about nothing as ever. I'm guessing this is more down to my (lack of) foot work, right? The clutch isn't slipping as much as the worn old OE clutch and is just biting hard, so I probably just need to give it a bit more (or less?) 'gas' before releasing the clutch to get a smooth change... in which case I do like how the old clutch allowed me to be a bit lazy :giggle:

Also the first maybe.. 1cm of the clutch pedal travel also seems to do nothing at all. It is very light, and you can feel when it starts to actually do something with the clutch - a kind of grinding is felt (no noise!) through the pedal at the end of the 'light pedal travel'. Is that normal?!

That will be the clutch biting in when you come off the pedal

It is uprated after all

Thanks for confirming B)

What helix clutch you got and what power you running for it to still slip?

It wont be slipping

When i got my first helix in 2007 it was brutal!! Bit like crazy through the gears... My 2nd one in 2010 was faaar weaker they must have changed the recipe! But it still bit more than oem

Much stiffer clutch plate fingers than the OEM, so it will feel pretty brutal till you get used to it. The lining is also different, designed to grab and hold to avoid slip at high BHP. You should try the clutch in a high power Westfield, it's like an on off button. :o

for a mega jolt as you are going through the gears you should try out the helix paddle clutch :D

It's not slipping at all.

When I first got it fitted, yeah, it was completely mad. Every gear change was a massive jolt fest, no matter how hard I tried. It has settled down a heck of a lot, but still there. "Normal" driving is nice and smooth.

I think I will pass on the on/off clutches hah. Well, not on a daily driver anyhow!

Thanks for reassurance that it is normal B)

My Helix is the same, not the smoothest but certainly does its job :)

Do you also have that light 1cm ish initial clutch pedal travel? Probably smooth out over many, many miles I guess... like 100k or so ;)

A little bit yeah, also mine is a pain to get out of gear sometimes...

Cool.

I've noticed recently that mine is difficult to get in to reverse (maybe gear linkage needs adjusting or something?), but no problems getting out of gear or in to gear really :S

My car is sometimes hard to get into reverse even with a standard clutch - I just release the clutch and press it again and it goes straight in :) rather than force it in

I've had that a couple of times, but now it's more like. Er. I dunno...

It's as if the gear stick just moves too far to the left or something. It seems to go in alright if I don't push it alllll the way to the left. I think. I'll have to double check what I am saying here

Basically you're having issues with where your knob is going ? :giggle:

Hahaha

Yes. Sad face :(

mines the same, gettin it outa first or reverse when slowly maneuvering is a right arse sometimes. also wen in first sat in traffic it can creap forwards with clutch down. then if sat in reverse with clutch down crawls backwards. guessing this is how the helix clutches are set up??

If it won't come out of gear I find that just dipping the clutch and giving the go pedal a blip will release it no problems. If it does't want to go in reverse then put it in and out of 3rd and it should go straight in.

good thinkin i shall try that in the future lol

Thats a trait of the setup

If you rev 1st out longer it pops out no problem

Trust me that clutch is perfect ;)

ahh sound i shall do that then :) thought it was fine, me mate was more worried than me haha

Trust me nothing to worry about

Gearbox and oil

Clutch/ flywheel and release bearing are all just a year old

Was fitted by a WRC mechanic.....

Another trick is to double clutch! Just a trait
